Okay...sorry I just hate NASCAR even more than I thought possible after spending an hour to get gold on caution flag Indy race, and then found it impossible to beat Daytona caution flag.

I try to draft the Home Depot car (sorry I don't bother learning their names since I don't enjoy the sport) as long as possible to catch up to the pack, but because without aids my car slides all over the place it's hard to stay exactly behind him, even with very minor steering movements.

Even when I DO catch up to the pack drafting doesn't give me enough push to make it into first. I'm not even really sure how far back drafting works, and at what angles on turns. It's just really unnecessarily hard and not a fun challenge. I can see failing a few times if it's hard but for hours? Come on...

What did PD come on these forums and, seeing we found a way to make the race easier, decide to be ABS police? I almost feel like peeling back the updates to beat this and then reinstall them.

Any suggestions?

I have a solution but you're not gonna like it.

Go back in time and play a GT5 version in which you could still turn off ABS.
Because thats what's f*ng up your gameplay. Can;t turn off ASM, you used to be able to turn it off by turning off ABS, but now they made ABS impossible to turn off.
In other words: you're f*d.

Seriously..
I really, really don;t understand why PD does these things.
Nascars don't even have ASM, why make this 'challenge' rediculously hard.
Especially the one where you have to wait for the car to make a pit stop.. just 90 seconds of booooooring waaaaiting only to get to the track and 10 seconds later you already know: I;m not gonna make it. And then you have to restart and wait another 90 seconds.
Or the one where you have to drive 9 laps behind the pack (because if you drive IN the pack they just crash and ram you out of the track..), only to find you lack any cornering speed so it's impossible to get to 1st place.

I like GT5.
I really do..
But some of the things PD 'fixes' are horrible, and some of the challenges are horrible.
They take away the fun. GT5 should be about fun, not frustration.

/rant end

Also, is there a steering wheel setting that makes it easier? I think mine is on realistic w/10ff. It's an old logitech from PS2 era but seems to work fine on non-NASCAR events. I think it has a bias against the sport...

Maybe a G27 has more precise and smooth handling? I was gonna get one anyway but should I just wait to get it?

Well.. I use G25 and I can tell you the challenge is just rediculous.
Only solution is to do it 150 times untill you get lucky.

Thats my biggest problem with challenges like this.
Show me a person that is actually capable of doing this challenge gold more than 50% of the time. Same with Vettel.
Sure, everyone eventually manages to get it right, but is that really skill?

I know I can get everything on Gold, in fact I do have everything on Gold, but half of my Golds were not skill, just dumb redo redo redo redo untill that lucky moment.
Baah..

I did it all a week ago, with ABS or whatever everybody is crying for... I'm just saying, I could probably find 20 events/races that are much harder... If you can't do it now, come back for it later, when you have seen the vettel challenge, you will finally learn what a hard event to gold is.

Just remember to be creative, try new strategies often.

Can anyone post their strategy for gold? Like I said I follow the Home Depot car and pass the red car at the back of the pack (don't even know which one, target maybe?) on the right. I try to keep the draft even though it's impossible more or less. Eventually if I'm lucky I catch up to the pack just in time to sit at the back of it for 2 laps and lose...

I did this test with both ABS on and off (ABS off prior to most recent update) and it is possible to gold this. If I remember correctly you need to draft the first car you reach immediately and stay on his bumper at all costs till you reach the next car. Work one by one.

the game is getting more and more restrictive just like many other aspects of GT5. It is possible to gold with ABS on just be prepared to have a lot of time set aside

It's so random as well. The time I won Indy I got in 1st place fairly early in lap 2 and had to block the rest of the way. All the other times I was WAY behind...

Trying daytona right now, coming out of the pitstop I'm way behind the first three cars with nobody close enough in front of me to draft and pick up speed, tried it a few different times and have the same result, this makes no sense at all. I even tried slowing down so another car could get ahead of me and the rest of the pack just slows down too, hell I slowed down to 30mph and so did every other car behind me, I even had a car stopped behind me at one point.

This is ridiculous without being able to turn off abs. Who knew that NASCARS had ABS, must come in handy for all those sudden stops while turning left for 500'laps.

If you do that one when you come out the pits try and get 3rd to ram you then see how you go. Indy is pretty straight forward just draft try not too loose speed when cornering and always stick behind cars until you get to over 230mph then overtake thatll be about on the corners as for Daytona practise following tips above. It even says on the game you need to practise and thats what the events are.

Reading this is giving me no encourangement to even start this series.

Yes, challenges need to be hard, but surely there has to be some entertainment value amongst the frustration.

Having to wait 90sec for a pitstop as part of a challenge? Where's the skill in that? (sure they say 'everything comes to those who wait', but...)

I did it and allowed 6th place to bump me from the rear and won. Too early and you can't catch the draft of other cars. Too late and you won't have enough time.

Just to clarify I'm not talking about Daytona w/the pit stop I'm talking about Daytona (the final challenge) with full course caution. Much harder than ramming your way into the pack, though that is what I did for the first one.

For the last Daytona Challenge, you need to get behind the Lowes car and without bumping the wall or the Target car follow it into turn one, if you can, stay a little to the outside while in the the turn! Once you hit the back straight you need to be within 1.8 sec's or less from the lead, any further back and you can't catch the draft. In turns 3, 4 and down the front dog leg, I believe I stayed to the inside. I don't know if this helped or not, but after the start I changed my brake bias on F and R to 0 trying to lessen the effect of the ASM. I think it took me 4 or 5 tries to get gold.

I am aware of that. I was just giving advice to that one as well. For the drafting one, what I found best is that sometimes the moves you are making are wrong. If you see two cars drafting it might be best to alternate between the two until you gain the most speed and literally stick yourself to the back of the bumper of the one that's moving faster.

I just finished these and had the same prob. Since you cant turn off ASM or ABS, I went and turned brake bias down to 0/0 and that actually worked, won by 1.4xx seconds. couldnt do it be fore hand HTH

That's interesting. I'll try that next time. I finally beat it by sheer luck. I found it's the Lowes car at the beginning you need to draft for your life. I put active steering to strong and that kept me from sliding around so much. I think that's what helped me win but I will try the 0/0 bias and see if that helps. Thanks.

5. the O for menu and the plus pad, left to decrees, right to in cress value up/down to scroll menu. HTH

I'll have to try that, its just a pain to attempt it while racing.

get to the back straight, right on the lowed arse, and do it there tried at start an smacked the wall "Are you OK that looked like it hurt" lol
