Nosespray is the most worthless crap ever made. Usually I feel worse after using it.

Are you talking about Afrin? Because Afrin is directly from God himself. Maybe you're not using it right. You have to breathe in through that nostril really really hard. I usually feel a burning sensation through the back of my nasal passage when I take a hit of the Afrin. Then... clearness.... ah the clearness.....

But watch out, your body can get addicted to that stuff.

Nasal decongestant sprays should only ever be used for a day or two or else they do make the problem worse, a saline spray can be pretty effective and can be used over long periods.

I generally stick with modern medicine as for me it has been the most effective, there are only a few natural products that have helped me one being the saline spray and acidophilus being another, which I started using after a recent trip to Bali where I caught a small dose of Bali Belly, it helped clear up the lingering tummy troubles. Another natural therapy I do swear by is acupuncture which surprised me as I was one to believe sticking a bunch of pins in my body couldnt do anything but hurt. Tried it for a sciatic problem as a last resort and it work a treat.

Nose spray blows, but Nose Gel owns. Zicam ftw.

No way Sage, I’m with danoff. I’m sorry, but you could not be more wrong. That stuff works a treat!

Well, I don’t think I’ve ever used Afrin – I’ve got a bottle of Fluticasone in my drawer, and I refuse to it. And don’t get me started on Flonase – that’s the Devil’s work right there!

Ah Afrin. Well, I use the generic version, but it is all the same. Kroger actually gives you twice as much for a buck cheaper. I try to get either the no drip or extra moisturizing kind with the pump spray.

TRhat's what my allergist told me and I told him that with my sleep apnea I have to use a CPAP machine, which means that I need something that can keep my nose clear for 8 hours minimum and until he can give me something "safe" that will work for 12 hours I will stick with Afrin. So we agreed I will use it until something better comes along.

Funny enough, I actually bought a bottle to put on my desk at work last night.

Sage, did you maybe use the Wal*Mart brand? I tried that once and I went from stuffy to "Oh my God, my head is going to explode!" I tried it twice and then tossed it. Kroger and Rite-Aid both have effective generic versions, except Rite-Aid adds a lemony scent that makes me feel like I am inhaling floor polish.

Well I suffer from something called CFS which has on cure (Apart from some loonies who claimed to cure it with a Chinese medicine, unsurprisingly it didn't work when a group of people of a CFS group tried it).

Would I consider herbal remedies?

No, they have a very limited success rate. I remember a story told to me by a friend who has worked in Ambulances and now Out of hours surgerys for 20+ years. A rich doctor (quite famous but don't know him) told a high member of one of the Committee's (Sp? again) that if he could prove they worked he'd give him a million pounds. The doctor still has the million.

They can work, they normally do so through boosting the immune system.
Remember plenty of drugs have natural elements to them.

The only illness I ever get is a minor cold about once a year, so I never have to raid the pharmacy, but if I ever had a serious malady, I'd listen to my doctor over a shaman. When I do get that irritating cold, I'll take some Vitamin C supplements, hit the throat spray every hour, drink copious amounts of water, and sleep at least 10 hours each night. So, I kind of use a combination of natural/medicinal treatments, and the worst part of the illness is gone in a couple days.

But like I said, if it were anything more serious, I'd trust modern medicine. I cringe whenever I hear of someone trying to cure life-threatening illnesses with hippie medicine, like in that one South Park episiode. There was a story like that here not too long ago where a mother kidnapped her 4 year-old son from the hospital because she didn't want him to undergo a kidney transplant. Instead, she wanted to try homeopathic remedies, and the boy nearly died before police were able to take custody of the child (under court order), and get him back to the hospital, where they performed a successful operation.
