So much for $20k, so much for cheap insurance, so much money for me to buy a Holden with, but that's me.:sly:

Ive got nothing against your holden mate but you seriously cant compare a M3 to a holden....

Dad can insure my car.. hopefully... plus i doubt insurance would charge much more for a M3 as a 328... but I'll have to get some proper facts and quotes together.. I mean i earn a decent amount at my job, but that being said i dont want to spend lots of it on a car, but im prepared to spend a bit more than something to get from A to B...

Im earning about 80,000 a year on the safe side... I could pay off the car loan quickly.. then all i have is maintence and fuel/insurance... so its not like a great amount is going towards actually paying for the car loan..

Oh I know the M3 is better, but I'd be so much more content and proud in a Holden.:p (I can compare the looks and sounds, Holden wins IMO :p ).

328 to an M3 is like an Executive Commodore to a GTS, I would imagine there would be a huge increase, especially on such a renowned sports car.

Aren't you like 20 Dion? I'd hate to think of insurance on an M3. On my car full comp is $3,000 a year, and that's on a $5,000 econo-box.

That said, an M3 is something I approve to. As long as you drive it down to Melbourne to show me. :)

Really, comprehensive on mine is $1k. I do cheat though, I get 60% discount, but then that's only $1.7k normally.....for an $8k V6 Ute.

if dad insures it and puts me as a nominated driver its only 2k for full comphrehensive insurance.

Still tieing up a few loose ends but if i can convice my dad it should happen....

This one would be the pick atm... desperate to sell.. offer him less and see what happens.. fly down and drive it home... 130,000km 3.2lt engine... woo

Wow that M3 is amazing...if you could get it down to like 25k I reckon that'd be an awesome deal!

Ok just a few more things to get sorted before i book the airline ticket to sydney...

Does anyone know whats involved getting the car registration from NSW to QLD? Also surely its in RWC but what standards do NSW have in place? surely the guy would need some certificate to say the car has passed basic checks...

Do any of you guys live near lidcombe? and if yes you know a mechanic?

At this stage if all the boxes are ticked then its looking good

It doesn't really matter on that M3, cause the Rego runs out this month. As long as he sells you the RWC I'd think you could just take it in and register it in QLD once the old one ran out.

no changing rego is easy... flying to sydney is easy.... the 1700km drive back that is insane.

A thorough PPI should be your top priority on either of these cars. Find a BMW specialist and split the cost with the owner (even if he/she doesn't sell the car to you, they will have a PPI in hand for next buyer).

At 130,000 kms, I would find out if the shocks are original. If they are, they should be changed. Anything rubber in the suspension --all bushings and mounts should be in consideration to be changed. Common wear items like the water pump, front control arms and hoses are entering the replacement phase. The car will run and go fine if you don't do any of this, but will not handle in "as new" condition.

Drive the car. Everything should feel very tight and buttoned down. There should be no floaty-ness or bobbing when cornering or going over bumps. Anything that feels amiss is probably worn suspension component(s).

The rear shock mounts (top) also frequently wear out at this mileage. You need to remove the carpet in the trunk to check their condition.

Pay special attention to the rear toe arm. The bushing that locates the arm to the body is well known for wearing out. If it is worn, the mounting/carrier can tear, leading to very expensive welding.

We never got the "Euro" motor here in the US.. all our cars have the gimpy 240 hp bored and stroked 325 motor. So I have no advice there except to say make sure you see receipts for services. I understand the S52B32 needs periodic valve adjustments.

Also, there is a plastic underbody tray that is located just under the front of the car. It extends from front bumper to just fore of the engine. It is common for people to tear/damage this piece going up and down ramps and inclines. The cheap plastic grommets give way and poof it's gone. Not a big deal, but annoying. There are also two additional aero elements on the sides down there. These "porkchops" can also be damaged.

The radiator is weak in our US spec version. I don't know if the "Euro" motor uses the same part, but if it does, this should also warrant a close inspection.

All I can think of off the top of my head. It's been years since I've had an M3, so while I hope everything I've posted is 100% accurate, my memory sometimes fails me. I would look for a more updated/comprehensive/accurate list on the net somewhere. bimmerforums or m3post would probably have a good one. Unofficial E36 is also a very good site.

BTW, I like the Estorilblau one with the forged/polished wheels (the 97). That thing is the hottness. Loose the eyebrows, though. Makes the car look narcoleptic. The wheels were an (expensive) option here in the US and are much lighter and stronger than the stock cast wheels.

The Alpineweiss car looks like the trunk lid doesn't align properly on the left side. Could just be the angle, though. But if body parts don't align perfectly, that usually indicates an accident and a ghetto repair job.

A new game plan...

~20,000 - 25,000 for a 1-2yr old car, full service history...
What would be a good choice? Some good cars?

4 or 6cyl
Manual
no SUV's / 4WD cars only

I mean id like something thats nice to drive and somewhat sporty.. but im open to suggestions..

As much as i want the M3, thats something i can buy another time, right now i just need something good and reliable to serve me for the next few years without having to worry about spending a lot to maintain it.

(assuming 4WD cars only is correct)

Congratulations on the purchase of your Subaru. :sly:

A WRX is a money pit. Sister got one, has been nothing but money and sitting in the garage.

Hmm...strange, most of the WRX owners I know (and I know a few) are very happy with their cars (granted, I met most of them at club meets, and it could be said that they're..."preferential" towards the brand*, and might have rose tinted glasses.

What's gone wrong with it?

*Got a bit of friendly ribbing when I came over to the "Dark side"

Well my sister and I don't normally talk much, but hoses seem to go pretty often making the engine overheat. There was something expensive recently but like I said, I mind my business she minds hers, she's a bit of a black sheep (and not for car choice).

I didnt mean that...

scrap the AWD / 4WD only versions...

i just meant i didnt want a SUV / 4WD car...
AWD is ok but not a SUV.

Also dont like FF to much but i mean at the end of the day...
So far suggestions ive seen and stuff..

Ford Focus..
Honda Civic..

Sadly my BMW 3 Series i can only find 2002 or 2003 if im lucky in that price range...
Surely im missing something thats FR, good to drive can pick up a few years old with low km good service history for under 25k without buying a commodore / falcon like 94% of the population. (not that its a bad thing.. i just want to have something different)

If you get a Focus, it must be the newest model, any previous generations will be a bit unreliable. (Remember, I work at a Ford dealer......). The new generation looks a hundred times better anyway. I doubt you'd find a recent model small fuel efficient RWD car, as these days if an automaker wants something fuel efficient they make it FWD, because it's lighter and more aerodynamic.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.
If i't is available to you Infiniti G35X

I still don't get why the RAV4 is going...
It is on it's last legs?
Has it just outlived it's usefullness?
Are the 'rents getting rid of it because they don't like it?
Or do you just want a new car?

Unfortunately we don't get the Infiniti G35.

And I think you should be looking at a 2003 Astra Turbo as well :)

WUT?

Foci ain't bad cars, just EXTREMELY cramped.

So avoid them.

Mazda 6i with a stick, 'nuff said. It'll make you happy. Plenty of room, quick enough, and not ugly by any stretch.
