Like you've said, you know nothing about cars before 1989.
The 2.8L V6 is the first member of the Chevrolet 60° V6 family. It was first used in the X-bodies (Citation/Phoenix/Skylark/Omega) then in the A-bodies (Celebrity/6000/Century/Cutlass Ciera), J-bodies (Cavalier/J2000/Skyhawk/Firenza/Cimarron

), F-bodies (Camaro/Firebird), S-10/S-15 pickups and the Blazer/Jimmy. It was also used in the '84-'86 Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer.
It was stroked (or was it bored... I can't remember now...) to 3.1L in the late '80s for use in the first generation W-bodies (Grand Prix/Regal/Lumina/Cutlass Supreme). It was once again bored or stroked or both to 3.4L, and used in, again, the W-bodies, F-bodies, N-bodies (Malibu/Grand Am/Alero), U-bodies (Lumina APV/TransSport/Silhouette). The basic 2.8L engine still lives in in the form of the 3100 and 3400 V6's. There are also 3.0L and 2.5L versions used in the Chinese Buick Regal.
The 3100 and 3400 aren't too bad, but the 2.8L was a gutless turd.
(And 2.8L is not the largest I4 ever put into a car or truck. Porsche used a 3.0L in the 968)
