I'm building my custom PC and right now I'm doing a test run (so no case) and nothing is showing up on monitor. I feel it has something to do with the cables. Everything is on and running except there is no connection between monitor and motherboard/video card. The only thing connected to the monitor (other then AC plug) is an HDMI cable to the video card. Nothing showed up so I plugged a D-Sub (blue one) cable from the motherboard to the monitor. Nothing there either... Do I need other cables like tv outputs or DVI's? And not sure if it matters but when I turn the thing on the monitor goes from no cables to no signal....

SPECS
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz
Monitor: Acer S231HLbid Black 23" 5ms HDMI LED-Backlight
Power Supply: Corsair Professional Series Gold 850-Watt
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB ( 2 x 4 GB ) DDR3 1600 MHz
Video Card: HD 7850 ASUS
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V 1155

If you're going to try using the onboard VGA output, you'll probably need to remove the GPU. I'd give that a go first as a test.

HDMI out on the GPU to HDMI in on the monitor should just work. Unless you have an input selector on the monitor which is unlikely.

Does the GPU require a power supply?

I have an 850w supply so it's definitely good, I just noticed that apparently the RAM slot is not right because it is lit up meaning it is wrong but I don't see what that has to do with the monitor. I also just added a DVI cable and still nothing.

If the tabs aren't locked in place, the memory isn't all the way in. :)

FIXED! The memory wasn't in all the way LOL. I didn't know you had to force it that hard!

I always wrap some electrical tape around my thumbs when I'm about to install RAM modules, otherwise it feels like I'm going to split my thumbs.

If the RAM isn't in properly, the monitor will not come alive at all.

Which is quite handy to remember when you want to figure out why its not showing anything when the RAM has died.

Oh...I can kind of see that. So the ram slides into the stationary side first....

I guess but I put it in evenly anyway. Any tips on getting a 24 pin connector out of the motherboard? I feel like if I pull any harder the motherboard will break...

Make sure you are squeezing the tab, and lightly wiggle. If you have to use light pliers or needle nose, it may help to get a better grip on the plug.

Got it. And now I need help connecting my case fans to the mobo. I want the mobo connection so I have control. None of the manuals help so can you guys help or give me a good link on how to?

Plug the case fans in to the CHA_FAN port and the CPU fan into CPU_FAN port.

Plug them in to their most local port.

I already have the CPU fan in but for the case fans I found the CHA_FAN ports. The thing is I don't see any 4 pin connectors coming from the fan...And I don't see anything in the manual about case fans

There should be a cable coming from the fan. It will either have a 3 pin connector or 4 pin connector. If it's a 3 pin, plug it into these three pins, with the groove in the connector facing the tab on the header:

If it's 4, plug it in all 4 pins with the groove facing the tab.

^ Good-o :) Make sure to get the pins the right way (the tab and notch on the connector is pretty self explanatory, but it is easy to mistake). I fried a board a few months back doing that, just completely didn't realize what I was doing and plugged it in back to front. Wondered at the time why it was so difficult to plug in.. I'm a dumb-arse sometimes ;)

There is a red corded serial ata plug coming from case with 7 pins but I dont know where to put it. Any help? I think it is for the esata on front panel though. There are 3 different places on my motherboard to plug it into. The Z77 6GB, Z77 3GB, and just a 6gb. Which one?
