I was playing my 2+ year old 80 GIG backward compatible PS3 last night when it went pop, that’s all she wrote. I smelled a slight twinge of electronic stink about a half hour before it went pop, while I was playing everything was perfect and then it all went blank. I try to start it and it goes from just a green light and a single beep to a blinking red light and a double beep.

My main concern is the hard drive. I thought about either buying a used one and trying to see if the HD would work on the newsd unit or finding a repair place to take it to. Unfortunately I never backed up anything but no big deal, it would be cool if the HD was still functioning though.

Any suggestions would be cool, thankzzzzzzz…….

Sounds like yellow light of death (YLOD). Although you did not describe a yellow light, the other symptons all fit into place. The Yellow light should appear for around a second between the green and red lights.
Unfortunately the contents of the hard drive are probably gone. Some say that if you remove the HDD and re-insert it your PS3 can come back to life, however this did not work when mine died last weekend.
Sony will repair out of warranty, but will charge $150, and you may recieve a refurbished replacement.
I dont know if you have amazon in the USA but they are doing a 160GB PS3 for a good price at the moment.
I hope you get it sorted soon anyway mate, also I can provide instructions on how to retreive a disk if there is one stuck in there.

Got her fixed ..... WEEEEEeeee, now i'm in the process of backing it up w/ my newly re-partioned FAT32 USB Drive.

Word to the wise: You can't interchange Disk Drives w/ other PS3z, in other words "Your SOL if you haven't backed up the drive that is chained to the box". NO DRIVE EXCHANGING

Sounds like a capacitor blew.
Hope you didn't pay too much for a 25c part and some soldering (did they tell you what they fixed?)
