Hi

So i bought a used playstation 2 back in january because i felt the urge to play GT4 again!, the console was in good working order for the first 3/4 months of the year but suddenly it decided it doesnt want to play GT4 anymore and it wont read the disk, it loads the 2 other games i have for it fine..its always GT4!..ive bought a few more copies of the game to see if its just the disk thats the problem, but it wont read them either!

Cant understand whats happening!? any advice welcome! :)

Try putting it on its side as mine stopped reading discs because some sort of laser scanner will eventually move from a lot of use and won't read the discs.

If you know how you could also clean the laser scanner.
Mine wouldn't read discs but my Dad just cleaned off the scanner, it's been going 10+ years now.

I have this problem a lot.

What it's actually caused by, is the lid of the unit not being held down properly. That then un-triggers the switch and stops the disk spinning. Get a bit of tape and when you close it down, just tape the cover down and it should work (about 90% effective).

If you're willing to get your fingers grubby and risk buggering up your PS, rip it open and clean it out, and see if you can get a replacement switch. If not, just put a TINY TINY piece of tape on the switch, just to make it a bit taller so it will activate without the lid being down as far as it should be. :)

Ok so ive tried putting it on its side and setting the disc scanner to fast, neither of them worked..so im gonna try opening it up and cleaning it! ive never opened a games console before!!! :scared:

That happens to my slim. I had 2 fat ones forever until I accidently broke my good one and the other died.

You're not alone with this issue, as I've been wanting to play GT4 for a while now. It takes my PS2 a lot of persuading for it to read the disc, and even when it does, it will stop reading it after a while. I know that it's not my laser scanner because I also played GT3 recently and it played perfectly and the laser scanner was capable of reading it 9 times out of 10 despite having at least two times the scratches compared to my GT4 disc.

If you still want to play GT4, then you can persuade your console to read the disc by cleaning the disc in a circular motion with a cloth and then quickly placing it into the console and closing the disc tray. It doesn't work all the time though. Another way of getting your PS2 to read the GT4 disc is to try and "jumpstart" it. Open and close the disc tray really quickly and it will confuse the PS2 a little bit, but it should read the disc.

I hope that this helps you.

I presume its a slim PS2 right? I would say open it up, its not too difficult just make sure you follow a tutorial on the web. Give all the insides a thorough clean out and clean the laser lens directly with a cue tip and alcohol gently. You haven't got that much to loose if it doesn't work out because you can just get another one.

Ive seen a few vids on youtube, i think i know what to do..but i dont really have the tools to do it..or the alcohol..

This is one of the problems I used to have with GT4, my PS2 just refusing to load the game even though the disk I bought years ago is still in mint condition.

Did you get it sorted?

I got it sorted over the weekend! :)

i opened it up and cleaned the laser scanner and it fine now! thanks for all your advice, its been very welcome!! :)👍
