More like the GT-R

These have been out for a while now though. I ride past a dealership with a bunch of these all the time.

The new spoilers look really ugly.

They aren't much different from the old ones, they drive the same.

EDIT: Also, they aren't as low as the pictures depict.

It looks somewhat startled! Like some cartoon animal!... they should have dumped an evo x nose and lights on the front...

It's kinda a fail like it was when it went into production. This Gen should've stayed a concept I think.

I really like the yellow one. Maybe just me, but I like the bodykit on me. I think it`s somewhat ricey, but not too overdone to show bad taste.

One thing I really don't like on these is the steering ratio.

Bumping the wheel with your knee means switching lanes. Can get annoying sometimes and probably dangerous. The overall turning radius sucks too, so it was pretty much a waste to do that.

One thing I don't really like is how come this doesn't have 4WD. Maybe I'm speaking from GT4 whereas the car would probably benefit more with rear-wheel power. I said 4WD because of Mitsubishi's rally heritage. Otherwise, it's a car I've never hated. It's still worlds better than the 2000-ish Eclipse.

The fashion trend for cars nowadays (since I follow fashion) is to have the bar underneath the front grill be painted black for the vertically-elongated grill look. I've never really liked it probably speaking as a '90s guy. That "mustache" under the front grill is like a silhouette of a front grill larger than it actually is. And I think if Mitsubishi wants to make a tuner Eclipse, make it like the Eclipse in Post #11 and add 4WD or RWD.

Otherwise, I like this Eclipse.

I agree, I like this Eclipse too but I wish they had 4WD, it would increase performance massively, never hated the Eclipse

AWD wouldn't "increase performance massively", it would possibly improve low speed acceleration from a standing start, and traction in conditions of low grip, but unless they've put the Evo's engine in there it's not really going to have enough power to warrant an AWD transmission. All it'd do in any normal model is destroy fuel consumption and make the car needlessly heavy.

Exactly. This car really doesn't need 4WD. It would simply add weight. The current Eclipse GTP comes with a 265HP V6. I think it would be more attractive if it was RWD, but the car is fine right now the way it is.

The AWD Eclipse in the 90s was the Eclipse GSX. The 1st gen Eclipse GSX had only about 190 or so horses and AWD. The 2nd gen GSX had like 210-215 horses and AWD. The engine they used (4G63) was also used in the Lancer Evo all throughout the 90s until 2006. The newer Eclipses (from '00 onwards or whatever year it was that 3rd gen came in) don't use the Lancer Evo engine. Instead they started using V6's for the top Eclipse instead of a turbo I4.

AWD wouldn't "increase performance massively"
It might make it somewhat less of an understeering, front-tire burning, torque-steering pig. It wouldn't be much, if any, faster; but it may have some semblance of handling. Granted, slapping AWD onto the car alone won't do much. However, combined with some suspension retuning we could have a great car.

but unless they've put the Evo's engine in there it's not really going to have enough power to warrant an AWD transmission.
It has nearly as much power as the Evo did when it came out in America, and considerably more power than the old Eclipse GSX did. :odd:

Ehm, then how come there are way weaker cars with AWD?? From the top of my head I can think of Suzukis, Daihatsus, Audis, Volvos etc.

You are correct to an extent. Anything with less than (lets ballpark a number) 200 HP uses AWD usually for traction in wet/snow conditions rather than performance reasons. Audis and Subarus use AWD for both reasons.

Does it? I didn't research the car thoroughly, I have to admit, but I guess I should have assumed given that many cars are getting more powerful and heavier yet not really going much quicker than their predecessors.

As Toronado said:

Many cars that use AWD are more for traction in adverse conditions. Audi's Quattro is a good example. It's been used on performance cars, but it's also been used on fairly standard models. Same with the "x" models of BMWs you guys get in the States. They don't offer any performance advantage over the regular models, but I'm sure it's appreciated in the States that get a lot of snow or rain over winter.

Same goes for small Kei cars and the like with AWD. It's not necessary in the slightest from a performance point of view - it just improves traction. Much of Japan gets quite frequent rainfall, which is probably one explanation as to why many underpowered kei cars come with AWD.

As I mentioned, in a non performance application, the main effect is to increase driveline friction and add weight, both of which ruin fuel consumption.

I've never been a fan of the Eclipse, really ever. But I've been saying for a while now that this car isn't too bad, minus the fact that its based on the Dodge Avenger and has lost all of its sporty history with these two most-recent generations. If they (Mitsubishi) were smart, they'd take the powertrain out of the Lancer Ralliart and make it an optional setup in the Eclipse, all while putting that car on a (small) diet, and making a credible successor to the origional Penta-Star cars of the early '90s.

As an owner of a small FWD performance coupe, I do know and understand what the Eclipse is all about. The problem is, it just feels "too big" for me to have it be anywhere close to "right."

Golly. I didn't know that the new Eclipse was already a bad rep to the world of GTP, I'll be the first one here to root for the car and to say that the Eclipse looks like the baby of the Lancer Evolution X, and that's a good thing :)
