Given what Murcie says, I guess you're right. But, I'm trying to bring up the same point as Murcie, I'm just saying it differently. :dopey: Keep it off of the streets, lad!
 
I still say that Turbo Brick would be the route to go. Reliability wouldn't be an issue, parts are cheap..
 
It's still a brick, turbos aren't allowed on P-Plates. At least they don't have the embarassing stigma of "Lolvo drivers" anymore though.
 
Who cares about autocross? It isn't racing. It's just a silly time trial.

You're welcome to go post video racing your car wheel to wheel.
 
If you want a turbo car on your P's you can apply for it if the power to weight ratio is ok and the car isn't on the not allowed list. But I don't think that is wise in this case.

Get a Corolla.

I don't get people's obsession with it, they have track days you know
 
While I would rather do track days, I can see why people get in to autocross. It's well suited for people trying to perfect their car control, especially novices as the speeds are a lot lower than on a track and there are no other cars to hit.. Much less risk.
 
Autocross is timed. Its about $150 cheaper, it doesn't destroy a set of tires, pads, and rotors in a day, I don't have to drive 3-6 hours to a road course. And frankly I don't think either of my cars are prepared for a track day.

But, no, I'm not going to track days, needing new brake pads/rotors every other lap, and feeling bored... And then pushing harder... And then flipping.
 
Yea true but I don't see much appeal to autocross other than occasionally taking what you have out. No need to get something just because it'll be fun at an autocross.plus no one says you have to absolutely drive at the limit on the track and ruin parts, one set of good tires and pads will last a while.

But, the point is to build a track car, and get as much seat time as possible. So, why not get some good brakes and tires, and go to Time Attack, autocross, and track days? Eventually, once people really build up their autocross cars, and driving talent, Time Attack and track days become almost inevitable. :lol:

Both are over-exaggerating a tad bit (one way more than the other), imo.

Been alongside its owner during its track time, & it hasn't needed any new rotors or pads beyond what he installed when it came time due to the previous owner's usage over a year ago. The only thing track time has done has eaten up a set of tires.

Though, to be fair, it really only sees the track 1-2 times every 2 months. Other than that, it only leaves the garage once a week.

And, there's a very similar Exige that autocrosses, and does time attack... :D I like them. Especially when the owner basically drops the car on Hennessey's body kit with 275/35/18s. :drool:

It's not about getting as much seat time as possible, your missing the point. It's about having fun with your car not being super competitive. People that don't autocross go to the track all the time just to drive their stuff in anger a bit and don't have giant brakes semi slicks lightened cars. Not everyone wants a race car you know.
 
But, for those of us looking to get into competitive driving, sometimes it's worth it to have a goal; I must beat that ugly white Toyota Corolla Tercel!

Then what's the excuse for a Boss 302 or a 370Z Nismo, 2 other owners I have had personal time with at the track, and haven't had to do anything more than my friend's Lotus to cope with the track wear?

In fact, the Boss owner has recently become a track instructor with his car & even daily driving it, the car hasn't needed anything outside normal maintenance. The only thing the track time has done has caused him to buy a new set of track tires for better performance & cut the wear on his factory tires.
 
I'm not saying it's impossible, but, the 370Z and Boss 302 had beefier brakes from the factory, didn't they?

The Nismo did, but the Boss has the Brembo 4-piston calipers & vented rotors which are optional on the standard GT, & standard GT rear calipers with a higher compound pad.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that several track days have not eaten up the brakes on the cars as you exaggerated.

Yes.

Do you have a car now or do you need one just to 'have a car'?

If the former, keep it and get more driving experience under your belt. If the latter, look for something sensible like a Corolla, Civic, Camry, Accord type car; picking the right example will mean relatively cheap and comfortable transport that is also reliable.

Zac, I say again: we all want a car better than what we have. My current car isn't the car I'd want for my life, but, it's an awesome car nevertheless. Find something you'd be happy to be seen in for two/three years while you save for the FP.

I like this idea but getting something that doesn't eat savings is harder than it sounds. If you can get a decent job then by all means get a little beater and save up, you'll be happier in the long run. However if you think this is your only shot go for it, some times are fun and some you'll hate yourself but you'll have what you want in your driveway every night.
 
And if this is your first car?

Safety and reliability should be high on your list.👍 All else is just going to get you in trouble.👍
 
E30 316. Perfect way to get experience and learn the dynamics of a RWD car at safe speeds. Also built very well and reliable.
