So a co-worker pointed this out to me today as he knows I hate having to pay so much for cell phone service. Right now I am on the basic of basic plans with Verizon, with a standard flip phone to boot, and pay almost $40 a month. :yuck:

In comes Republic Wireless as shown on Yahoo! HERE. You get a nice LG smart phone that runs off Android 2.3 and unlimited calling / texts / data every month for $19 + tax.

How it works is the phone has to be set up to use a Wi-Fi signal, and in turn uses that signal for all data transfer. (calls, etc) When you are away from a Wi-Fi signal, it runs off of the Sprint network. They do put a cap on how much data you can use, but a regular person will not get anywhere near it.

What do you guys think? I think I'm going to jump over there next week. There's no contract and you can try out the service for 30 days risk free.

Don't forget the phone is $99 for the current deal this month. Though if you don't use internet much then go for it! Just check for Sprint coverage in your area. They use that service when you are not on a WiFi connection.

Yeah I know about the $99 deal, that's why I'm doing it next week and not in January when my Verizon contact ends.

I 'm on Prepay with 2degrees here in NZ, and $20 worth of credit lasts me for around 3 months. Maybe you should look at going to a prepay service..

I started checking this deal out yesterday morning, in the course of which I went to the sign-up page but didn't fill it out and submit it. After googling the company, the package, the phone etc, I decided the offer was legit and went back to the signup page. Or tried to, anyway. Apparently while I was checking things out, they sold as many as they could commit to, and were refusing new signups.

Dang.

sounds not so cool to me.
Android 2.3 is pretty "old", the smartphone you get seems not new also.
Relating prices for you (US) and me (GER), we usually pay way more than you in the US... Seeing that we can get flatrates here for 10€ (~15USD) it seems overpriced.

I dont know how deeply you are into technical stuff, but i suggest to get a open source voip client, a smartphone which can run it and only a data flatrate (for voip) and register a voip number at any provider.

Not including any phone, that would sum up to about 12,5€ per month to call surf anything without limits. I suggest to wait for LTE phones to settle thus reducing the prices of "normal" smartphones (in case you "CAN" wait)

They are in a Beta phase right now, so they probably reached their Beta limit and stopped orders.

Dang indeed. :indiff:

Overpriced? When a typical large company smart phone plan could cost you as much as (or more then) $100 USD a month, $19 is a ridiculous deal. Hell, I have a basic flip phone right now with minimum coverage and still pay $40 USD a month for the service.
