Its not that the Civic is a horrible car (it isnt), the problem most Americans have is that it is a Civic. They have gained such a nasty reputation in the US thanks to all the import tuner kids running around throwing nine-foot spoilers and garbage can exhaust pipes on them.
Someone pointed it out earlier: The Civic just isnt what it used to be. The fifth and sixth generation Civics are the crem-de-la-crem when it comes to the model, and Honda has managed to ruin the car with the seventh and current gen models. Not only has the car gotten much, much larger, it has also managed to loose it's "soul" and it is pretty evident that Honda is compensating with outrageous styling.
The Si and the Type-R are good cars, but there are also so many more that are better. The VW GTI comes to mind, as well as the upcomming Caliber SRT-4, and maybe even Mazdaspeed3.

And whats up with the America bashing? We have a pretty big appreciation for small sport compacts and hot hatches. Cars like the GTI and the old Civic Si sell outstandingly well here in the US. Although older folks like to drive the larger, V8-powered sedans, I presume the differences are minimal across the pond. But you have to remember that the driving situations are completely different between the US and the UK. Most of our roads are flat, straight, and most citizens travel by expressway from city to city, etc. We don't have the rather silly roundabouts, twisty country roads, etc. as most of our streets have been built on a grid pattern. That means big, comfortable, high-powered cars are the vehicles of choise, and have been since the inception of the American automobile.
You have to keep in mind that America and Europe are very different places MattWilson. You may not like our Cadillacs or GMCs, and there are many Americans who wouldnt be caught dead in anything like a Peugot or FIAT. Different strokes for different folks...
But, the small car market is in a boom here in the US. Cars like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Nissan Cube, Toyota Yaris (read Vitz), Kia Rio, and Chevrolet Aveo have all recieved great ammounts of attention, and are becomming the new trend in the American market... Of course, at the same time, the crossover SUV is all the rage, as well as the return of the classic American muscle car and muscle sedan... But it is a difference of taste, and people would rather be in their 300Cs than a Civic Type-R.
