My freind is looking for a new computer, mainly for playing games such as HL2, GTR etc. any reccomended specs? his budget is around £600.

cheers

600 GBP? That's pushing it in terms of crazy features, but lets see.

For gaming, there is no substitute for the video card. Focus on the video card, a reasonable CPU and everything else is secondary.

For that budget, the Radeon X800xl might be the best fit after you get the rest of the parts together. Maybe an X800XT or a Geforce 6800 Ultra if the budget allows. With a bit of overclocking, my x800xl will handle Far Cry at maximum settings, zero AA and 1x AF and a resolution of 1280x1024 with a good 50ish fps.

For the CPU, I'll reccomend an Athlon64 3700+ (the model with 1mb cache)
Mobo, DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D

Ram, anyting PC3200 or faster. Realistically speaking, you can go with run of the mill PC3200 ram and get great performance while saving a great deal of cash. Just don't expect to see any good overclock results on your FSB though.

Everything else - just go with what your budget allows. Just don't skimp on the power supply. Get a branded one like an Antec or OCZ Modstream.

Hmm, that's a toughie. I buy from a place just a few minutes away from my house because their prices are close to what they'd be if I bought from a warehouse.

Someone in the UK would be more helpful for that

Ebuyer.com
overclockers.co.uk
dabs.com

etc, etc

I buy from a place in camden called Yoyo Tech.

But emads spec sheet would totaly blow the budget, my suggestions are:

CPU: Athlon 3200+, socket 939
Graphics card: ATI X800xl
Mobo:Asus A8V-E SE
Hard disk:Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80gb, SATA
Ram: OCZ Premier Dual Channel Kit 2x512MB
Case:Antec Plusview 1000
PSU (trust me price does NOT matter with these things):Ebuyer 400w ATX PSU

Thats about £600 in total

Why? The 6600gt benches lower. It saves cost sure, but it's going to give him a big hit on frame rates. It also doesn't help that the next generation of fps titles is just a bit over a year away and those will tax the hell out of even today's fastest cards. He needs all the GPU power he can afford if he wants to do gaming.

I stand by my spec sheet.
For a bit of cost savings, he could drop down to the 3000+ venice core - it's rediculously overclockable. Either way, both chips can easily head into FX territory on stock cooling 👍
