For Mother's Day I got myself a digital camera (yes, I'm cool enough to buy myself a Mother's Day present even though I'm a father). Anyway, we went home for Mother's Day this year so while my wife was showing off our new baby to the relatives, I went for a drive in a wealthy area of Denver, Colorado known as Cherry Creek and "tested the digital camera" (scouted cool cars). Just a sample:

Volkswagen Derby - a Mexican Seat Cordoba twin, I believe. Plates from Zacatecas, Mexico.

Mercedes ML350 - all new for '05! Also saw and photographed an E350 4Matic wagon, which is the new E320.

That's my story for the day. Incidentally, if some enterprising moderator decides this belongs in the "Videos & Photos" forum, I suggest he read the description of that forum - these photos are neither exciting, nor shocking, nor downright awesome.

:D

Meh, you've got us there.

Roll down your windows when taking pictures from your car - everything looks like you live in Bikini Bottom.

Nobody in the United States - and I mean nobody - but you could see a Volkswagen Derby in the US, let alone know what it is off the top of your head.

All the shots are from the car - it's my cousin's car and the passenger window doesn't roll down. Take what you can get.

Once I saw a Volkswagen Pointer.

Goddamn, how often are you in Colorado?

I ask myself the same question. I'm here all week. Literally.

So now that you got a digital camera are you going to take picture of you phoon...wow that could sound bad to someone reading that fast .

Cool cars. I hate driving through rich people areas, makes me so jealous when almost all the drive ways have an M3, Boxster or Carrera

Yeah - when we get back to Michigan I'll get on that.

What camera ?

Some Sony Something. Hell if I know.

 I find that hilarious, given that you could probably quote production numbers for each of the cars you posted pictures of, and write a lengthy review off the top of your head.

As a man, you're supposed to know the model numbers of every electronic and mechanical thing you own ...

I believe that the VW Derby is a 'booted' VW Polo - like the Bora/Jetta is to the Golf - do you get the Polo in the US of A?

Yup that looks like the Polo saloon, although they are just called Polos. It's like the hatch focus and the boot focus. Well the same model range.

So you get.

3 Door Polo
5 Door Polo
4 Door Saloon Polo
Err, Van polo. Called a caddy.

God i'm sick of my car.

I don't think they get the Hatch versions of the polo in the US.

Doug, do you know what powerplant those cars come with? just out of curiosity, do they get the 999cc and the 1400?

Whats with VW USA. First there was a VW 'Rabiit', and now this.

We also get the caddy though. But it s Van version of the golf Mk I.

Don't know about this model of Polo, but the latest version gets 5 petrol and four turbo diesel variants!

That one looks like a MKIII Polo, which is what I have. Which is also the same platform that that Seat Ibiza used when they were pretty decent in the WRC. Although the Seat got better engine options.

I've driven a MKIV polo and I dunno it wasn't as nice as mine. It suffers from the VW weight gain, where with each revision the car gets heavier.

Whats with VW making each new generation of cars so much bigger and heavier? - when the Golf got too big to be considered a small car they brought out the Polo. When this became over sized they brought out the Lupo - At this rate in 20 years time the Lupo will be about the same size as a Bentley Continental

Whats the latest Golf GTi's advertising slogan - "the original: updated"?
should be - "the original: but bloated"

The Polo has been around since the 1974 when it was called the audi 50, then in 1975 it was released as a more basic version called the polo. Although that outsold the 50 and then they stopped making it and just kept making polos.

So what I meant to say that the Polo has been around just as long as the golf has.

But yes, the cars get bigger and heavier mainly due to more safety features. Electronics, ABS systems, Airconditioning etc etc. It happens to most cars, I mean look at the BMW three series, or the Ford (Euro) Escort and then the Focus.

My car weighs about 950kg, or around that mark. But it doesn't have power steering, air con, abs and traction control.

It's still boring to drive though.

I kinda like the new Golf GTi, they made a compensation for the extra weight and gave it more power. Although now it's more of a small coupe than a hot hatch, so it's not the same class car as the first golf. I suppose that would bother persuists, but i'm sure most people don't care.

 Fair point - I have little patience for devices other than cars. I have no idea what model my phone is either. After searching the camera I came up with the following features: Sony, MPEGMovie EX, Digital Still Camera DSC-S85, Cybershot 4.1 MegaPixels.

We do not - but are you sure it's not a Cordoba? It looks exactly like it.

Our entire VW range is:
- old Golf 3-door (100hp 1.9L 4-cyl TDI or 115hp 2.0L 4-cyl)
- old Golf 5-door (100hp 1.9L 4-cyl TDI or 115hp 2.0L 4-cyl)
- GTI (180hp 1.8L 4-cyl turbo or 200hp 2.8L V6)
- new Jetta sedan (100hp 1.9L 4-cyl TDI or 150hp 2.5L 4-cyl)
- New Beetle (100hp 1.9L 4-cyl TDI, 115hp 2.0L 4-cyl, or 150hp 1.8L 4-cyl turbo)
- New Beetle convertible (115hp 2.0L 4-cyl or 150hp 1.8L 4-cyl turbo)
- Passat (134hp 2.0L 4-cyl TDI, 170hp 1.8L 4-cyl turbo, or 190hp 2.8L V6)
- Passat wagon (134hp 2.0L 4-cyl TDI, 170hp 1.8L 4-cyl turbo, or 190hp 2.8L V6)
- Phaeton (335hp 3.2L V8 or 420hp 6.0L W12)
- Touareg (240hp 3.2L V6, 310hp 4.2L V8, or 310hp 4.9L V10 TDI)

We don't get Lupo or Polo, and Jetta wagon and new Golf models have yet to debut.

No idea - if you can find Cano, you might want to ask him; he's got a decent handle on the Mexican car market. I'd check VW's Mexican website but I don't speak any Spanish. The other picture shows a trim level - it says MI, with the I in red. That's the best I can do.

Why don't you just look on the box the camera came in for the name? :odd:

Yup it's related to the cordoba, well the bodystyles and interior are pretty much identical. The next block over someone has an R reg cordoba, the interior is pretty much identical to my Polo. It even has the same knob for the headlights.

So

VW Polo Hatch = Seat Ibiza
VW Polo Saloon = Seat Cordoba = VW Whatchamacallit whatever you posted the name up somewhere in the first post

March%2004-3.jpg

That's a polo saloon, I would have bought one. But they aren't that common, well neither is the Cordoba. The hatches sell better here, because we like our hatches.

Do they sell the VW Bora here, or is that also a Mexican model? I've seen them around once or twice, and wondered what the heck a Bora was. IIRC, the ones I've seen had mex. plates.

Bora IS Jetta. They're exactly the same thing. "Bora" is the name given to the car in Europe. "Jetta" is the name in the Americas.

In a sense, yes, they do sell Bora here. I've seen two or three Jettas rebadged as Boras (I can only assume they were rebadged Jettas; I doubt someone would go to the trouble of importing a Bora from Europe).

Mercedes CLK55 AMG convertible - my coupe is rare, but this is the first convertible I've seen on the street, ever.

Eight miles later, the vehicle overheated (due to a likely antifreeze leak) and ran out of gas simultaneously and awaits tow to a mechanic tomorrow

EDIT: by the way, Europe gets a V6 AWD Bora. We're robbed of the best one!

Hey, I've seen those gauges before...a Volvo 850 possibly??
