... I do not have any issue with someone making a scratch-built product and then trying to recoup some of the cost. I do not think anyone here would deny him the right to sell his product...

I'm not against people wanting to earn extra money (or make a living) with their scratch modding work, of course, what I don't like is the way some people do it: "...give me your money; if I reach x amount you'll have my product, if I don't reach that amount, goodbye very well..."

I prefer the traditional approach, where a reasonable price is set for a EXISTING product, and the "customer" decides whether to contribute money or not. If the product has value, it will undoubtedly be a success. Just ask Peter or Ilja...

What on earth is the modding scene coming to?

So this guy has been pretty well known around the modding scene in the past few years. In fact, if I recall correctly, you've posted one of his mods - the "New Tyre Sounds" LUA app (which I do think is good work, but needs lots more time in the oven).

It's pretty clear he has the technical know-how, and isn't just some shyster out to fish for cash from those with loose wallets. That being said, I'm pretty suspicious if this is the pricing model he intends to use.

His big problem, as is the case with many modders (and developers in any software enviro for that matter), is that he just doesn't finish projects. Ever. He sort of "dabbles" in about 12 different projects nowadays - with none of them being anywhere close to finished. I started following him with his Club Motorsports project 2 years ago - and the project has only gotten 4 updates in 2 years, with the last basically being almost a year ago to the day. It's in 0.2 - and very much of that version number. In that time, he's been distracted by (very) silly things like the Speed Racer car (?) and loop-de-loop tracks with upside down physics (???) that also, shockingly, are nowhere near complete.

His recent pet project is a Kart - which apparently drives well according to reviews, but has no skins or AI - and the guy openly ****s on his competitors like the REG Kart in a pretty unbecoming manner in the discussion page.

Bottom line - this guy doesn't finish projects, so why on earth pay $2K for a potential promise with little evidence that a final release will ever come? If he consistently finished his work, I would support a reasonable per-user ~$6-$8 fee for the track. But nearly all of his tracks in his portfolio are in Alpha state, if that.

TL;DR he's not some scammer, but he's easily distracted and a bit of a project deserter - and in too deep. Now, with this """Fundraiser""", he's clearly trying to scrape for cash. If this "good Samaritan" is indeed him - which I suspect it is, considering the strange language in both the description and the update.

Bad idea to support this, IMO.

Question to those that do shift animation, I've got an animation set up and it does shift in game to the correct positions, but the driver shift action runs twice per shift, rather than once. I've tried at 30 frames and 60 frames for the animation but it still does the shift twice per gearchange. I'm trying to figure out what might be telling it to do 2 cycles. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah I agree it is an odd situation. Personally I would have preferred a pay to download. Unfortunately this is the first time that I've seen this track in any game. Having visited the track several times, the accuracy looks really good. I'm hoping to be able to do track days there in the near future.

I've seen quotes from a prominent track making team and talked with some one else that had a track commissioned by a very prominent track maker. Both are for AC. Both of those quotes were in the $6k range. In the scheme of things, $2k isn't too bad.

Like what a couple others have said, I don't mind paying a bit from someone actually putting in the work. I mostly do rF2 modding and just got done with a 2.5 year project. A couple $ would have been great, but I do it for the fun, not necessarily for the money. I know others have different opinions on that.

In this case it could be slightly different. I can't comment on the other projects or the quality of the work. The reviews of that content tells me that he creates some decent content.

The guy that put up the fund raising page isn't the author of the mod. Its a person that runs a real racing forum. He's pretty passionate on the sim side as well and is around on several sim forums. It Lots of SCCA and Club racers are on that forum. It has a small sim racing section. A lot of the users are in the US Midwest (Chicago) area. That track is used a lot in club racing for the area. I'm figuring most, if not all, of the contributors are local racers that would actually use this as a tool. At least that is what I would be using it for.

The "functionality" of the track may not need to be up to full AC standards. Mainly would just needs to be made well enough to do hot lapping.

This is a track that will never be licensed in a game. I've seen a very inaccurate version in GTR2. So for something that replicates the track as if you are actually there, and for it to be scratch built (non conversion of a licensed content), I'm ok with paying a premium on that. I know there are a lot of other users that if the AI isn't good enough, someone may pick up the torch.

That's just me. I know I'm a bit bias, as this is one of the few local tracks to me that isn't in any game. I know I would be putting in a lot of hours into it.

If you have enough extra hard drive space for a second copy of AC (vanilla) you can rename your current AC folder, or drag it out of steamapps. Then do an integrity check, it'll download a whole new copy of the game because theres not AC folder.
Then rename that "new" ac folder to something like AC Backup, and move your previous AC folder with all your edited content back to it original place with original name. Then drag and drop needed content from the new folder.

I forget the original comment I got this from, but I've had a clean copy of AC downloaded on an external for a while now, solves any kunos content issue w/o touching my precious tag structure I've wasted time on curated

That dude takes the absolute best LOD available for GT7 (which is the one used for scapes, showroom, home garage) and port these to AC as a raceable car because **** your PC.

If I were a Polyphony Digital employee I'd piss myself laughing seeing this (and it shows how little the average GT modder knows about the game they rip **** from).

Regards the track and knowledge now of the modder, i have some of his tracks and they are good in that he uses satellite scan imagery, i have been trying to find how he gets these and where from, its as easy as finding those scans and adding objects, he literally uses the images road texture on some of his tracks, you can do this rather crudely using google earth images and blender for the elevations (GIS).
Its like using photogrammetry for tracks, it looks amazing, but there isn't really anything that the modder is modelling.
The trick is to find how he gets these base images for free then anyone with a slight knowledge of track construction could do it.
Now i'm not suggesting you pay for something just because the person has slaved away making everything, but worth mentioning.

I was wondering about this as well with less than a day left before the deadline and just over half of the target achieved. Apparently it depends how the funding was initially set up.
According to Google:
If your Indiegogo campaign uses the Fixed Funding model and doesn't meet its goal by the deadline, all collected funds are automatically refunded to the backers within 5-7 business days, and the campaign is closed. If you used Flexible Funding, you keep the funds you raised, even if you didn't reach your target, but you are still obligated to fulfill the perks you promised your backers.
People seem split as to whether the track modder is the same person who started the crowdfunding, but the optics don't look good, especially with the wording in the sales pitch about rewarding the modder for his free work. Is it free, or is it not? It can't be both.
What a mess.
No problem at all with modders getting financially rewarded for their work if that's part of why they do it, but there's no need for subterfuge and opacity. The much-used Patreon model often causes distain, but at least it's transparent. The ransomware sales model with this particular track was misguided at best, and seems to have backfired massively.

Karting in AC isn't my thing at all but I downloaded Newcastle on your recommendation to check the visuals and it does look good. Photogrammetry produces wonderfully organic terrain and road surfaces that can look generations ahead of traditional repetitive texture methods. Early PG experiments had a bit of a 'melting ice cream' effect on TSOs, so I guess the skill lies in applying more detailed and geometrically-accurate traditional modelling/texturing over the photogrammed base environment.
What's that track in the images that you're working on? Looks great so far.

Great work! Hopefully, you should not work on it! 😆 . You're more efficient with scripting than I would.
I 've tried your files and got the lua files and csv.
I could have helped you regarding the meaning of each column in the csv file but i think you just found out more than what I knew.
I'm curious to see if modifications on pace values like brake/gas and speed would work, as it did not when I tried with Blender, but maybe I made something wrong at that time.

From what I remember, regarding your hypothetical columns, I wonder if there is not something linked to yaw/roll and or suspension/bumps

Here is an updated version of the fastlane reader. Now it works ingame, it can convert to a CSV file in a click, and gives you CSV data in real time while playing (check the follow player car box, and ctrl+C for the AI taking control). Load the fastlane thru the app first. The "hide controls" should help get a little more free screen lol, this need to be optimised.

It's a bit easier to figure out what detail/column are for.

Can't edit them in real time yet (i was fixing the save function first, it's done). Now i have to figure a way to influence data ingame in a controlled way, the slighliest wrong value end up in breaking the ai spline, and i would like to have very subtle value changes on a 10 point streak so you can soften the data delivered to AI and fix the "noise" that was recorded when recording fastlanes.

Edit : added a small editor. It doesn't save properly yet.

I am working on a version for 2000 ALMS. Modified body from GTR2 mod to fit on F302 B2K10 chassis along with increasing the polys to smooth the body curves. Only have the detail around the engine cover to do.

No, He takes the best lod and slaps subdivision on it 3 times. All you need to do on the best LOD is slap 1 single subdivision to fix the model. At most the car would be 500K with all parts hit with subdivider.

You don't need to use more subdivision after 1 in 99.99% cases on Gran Turismo models, Except for the Mazda RX-7 that needs 2 for some odd reason.

Karting in AC isn't my thing at all but I downloaded Newcastle on your recommendation to check the visuals and it does look good. Photogrammetry produces wonderfully organic terrain and road surfaces that can look generations ahead of traditional repetitive texture methods. Early PG experiments had a bit of a 'melting ice cream' effect on TSOs, so I guess the skill lies in applying more detailed and geometrically-accurate traditional modelling/texturing over the photogrammed base environment.
What's that track in the images that you're working on? Looks great so far.

You are bang on, this new way of doing it is light years ahead, and if you have the tools and knowledge 'easier' than traditional ways.
If i could find out how to get these scans he uses as he says they are freely available, I'd be doing loads i reckon.
This is where its going with tracks eventually, there's a few on RD which use photogrammetry and read feel and atmosphere is a game changer IMO.
He gets them from some lidar data agency site, i went on it but can't work out how to get the scans. I guess if he can sell a track for 2k he won't be sharing it either...

This is me fighting side by side before "6 Freres" with my own fresh ai fast_lane for my new layout in Rouen les Essarts (modern layout 72-94 but without the chicane, lasted only between 72 and 73) 🙃

By producing the ai lanes, I was able by mistake to reproduce some bugs that have been documented here (cars that stall or move in zig-zag shortly after the start for example). But all in all, after polishing the lanes, I was able to find a quick lane (for me) that allows really fine moments of racing without crazy behaviours (but still enough aggressive to overtake me more or less properly)

I hope to be able to release the MadBrain's Rouen update with the new layout in the following month , hopefully with night lights and some cosmetic and mesh enhancements (now that I have started with Blender...).

Guys, how were the gear ratios on LMP1 cars adjusted in the 2010s? Were the ratios free (as in they could vary event to event) or did they have fixed gear ratio sets instead?
