Am I the only one seeing the irony in Maldonado's number?

I'm not superstitious by any means, I was born on a 13th, but F1 has some history with the number 13. That history sure is befitting of everyone's expectations of Maldonado

I think it's awesome that he's embracing his "reputation" and going for a taboo number. Having said that, I still won't cheer for him. I've used 13 as my number in sports many times and always had a successful year when I did, it's never been unlucky for me.

Repeating numbers seem popular with 11, 22, 44, 77 and 99 being chosen.

What happened to naming cars in order of championship standing from the previous year?

Vettel will be with 1 this year, will use the #5 after this year.

I must the only one in here who couldn't care less about what number what driver wants and all the speculation that has been going on around it.

Nobody chose 69 either. Seems it's a grid full of maturity, that's good.

My Autocross number is 101, and my football numbers were 64 and 66, none of which were chosen. Dang

The most interesting thing I noticed from the number list was how few drivers chose high numbers - most stuck to numbers that have been around in F1 for some time.

I'd like to know why Hamilton chose 44 - the only reason I can think of is it's his first race win (#2) multiplied by his first championship (#22).

It's for marketing purposes. In almost every other series, drivers and riders have a number permanently associated either with them or their vehicle, which allows a sponser to build a brand of sorts that is tied to a particular car or competitor (e.g. Jimmie Johnson & #48, Valentino Rossi & #46 etc). Valteri Bottas, for example, has chosen 77 so he can use 'Bo77as' on things. F1 hasn't been able to do that for 18 years since the championship standing system was introduced - before that a team had a permanent pair of consecutive numbers that only changed on becoming world champions; the champion had 1, his teammate 2, and everyone else stayed the same (apart from the outgoing champions who swapped numbers with the newly crowned champion). Thus Tyrrell had 3 and 4 for many years, despite not finishing that high up in the standings.

44 was his karting number.

He used the number in his kart days.

From the Radio Le Mans page...

Nobody In F1 knows the ultimate question to the ultimate answer, so you're quite safe.

However, there God's last message to the universe is written in 30 foot high letters, burning on the side of the the far side of the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains in the land of Sevorbeupstry on the planet of Preliumtarn, which orbits the star Zarss, which is located in the Grey Binding Fiefdoms of Saxaquine. : "Content Blocked by request of FOM"

Given the fact that #1 have a spotty history in IndyCar and MotoGP for being cursed when it come to the world champ, here's hoping vettel runs his #5

Nope. I'd be more interested if they also let the drivers have unique details on their cars, even on the same team.

Kimi showing sentiment:

“It’s the number I already had last year and I saw no reason to change it. I like it which is good enough isn’t it?”

Emotion!

He won't. The FIA entry list confirms that he will continue to use #1 in 2014, with #5 reserved for future use.
