New Feature: Automatic Embedded Image Resizing

I had to look around and dig this up a bit just to say thanks. :)

I want to be able to see the images at full size... if it's worth it.
But most of the time it just stretches my browser window. Resizing beforehand was lame as it reduced the quality and there was no full-size, desktop version unless I uploaded another.

Once again, thanks.

Does it mean we are allowed to post pictures with bigger resolutions, like 1920x1080?
Not everyone is going to have the resizing enabled, so you'll need to take that into consideration when posting large(r) images still ;) I run at a resolution of 1920x1080, so have no need for images wider than 624px to be shrunk to fit - but I still don't want to have to scroll a complete screen past an image in an HD resolution or larger (which I had to do with TB's post, incidentally).

I'm sure others are in the same boat. :)

Good stuff Jordan. :) I'm just about to do a similar thing on my forums, although i have more of a reason to do it on mine as the images just cut off on the right edge if they are too big and there's no way to see the full pic. Its a common phpBB 3 problem, but the mod is an easy fix.

This mod will make GTPing a bit easier on the horizontal scrolling. :)

The hours of work I've put into making the tuner garage opening post look good just amounted to nothing as everything gets resized and none of the meticulously planned continuosity works anymore as extra line changes are inserted between the images. Personally not impressed at all... a great idea for photos but it screwed me up big time because it thinks I have ungodly big images (896px wide) while they're really around 25kB each. Not good.

See for yourself.
I love how some of you guys present your first posts in the Photomode section but I do think 900 pixels wide is too big.

I do think that the reduction size needs to be moved from 624 (random?) to 800 pixels wide. I prefer viewing pictures that size because it's big enough to see good detail but small enough to where I (maybe even a person with 1024 resolution) don't have the scroll sideways. If they were shrunk to 800 then that would be big enough to where I wouldn't need to click all the images, and the forum software wouldn't have to resize but half of them.

Overall I like the idea though. With the influx of new members I've seen quite a few irritatingly large pictures being posted and it does get frustrating. I wish the yellow bar was a bit more in tune with the website's design though. It's kind of ugly lol.

Not random:
Unfortunately, no. 624 is the maximum because that's the width an image can be before it stretches the page for guests (who view the forum with the sidebar) with the still-popular screen resolution of 1024x768.

Can't the forum detect if you're a guest or a user and adjust the limit accordingly? Also, can't it detect the resolution I'm using and adjust the limit accordingly too? Or maybe I could choose my preferred limit in the forum settings?

Don't get me wrong, the image resizing is a great feature but I believe it needs to be improved, otherwise it will help some but become a nuisance for others. For example, it helps a lot when I'm browsing in my old laptop which has a 1280x800 monitor, but it makes the pictures awfully small in my desktop's full HD monitor. While browsing the photomode forum in my desktop for example I have to click on every picture and that's quite annoying.

That would be an awesome thing if it worked. 1024px wide screens can display ~750px wide images without the "guest bar" and 750 is quite a step up from 624, 20% if my maths still works.

More than that, while I understand that giving equal treatment to everyone regardless of their status is a goal to be aimed for I can't help thinking that guests seem to be slightly favoured even with the expense of registered members. It sounds a bit odd to tailor the limits according to how guests with (honestly speaking, this is 2011 after all) a relatively obsolete resolution view the site while registered members can't even use the 1024px wide screen to its full capabilities. Not to mention that I feel most of us already have wider resolutions than that.

Some statistics. These figures are from a website about site design and were gathered from user data from the last 30 days before today.

8,320 - 1280x800
6,363 - 1024x768
6,139 - 1440x900
5,495 - 1280x1024
5,367 - 1366x768
4,753 - 1680x1050
3,356 - 1920x1080
2,828 - 1920x1200
1,523 - 1600x900
784 - 1280x768

Yes, 1024x768 is still pretty widely used and actually the second most used resolution. However... against those 6,363 people using it there are 38,565 people using resolutions 1280px wide or even wider.

I understand why 624px was picked but it sounds to me that it's a decision that pleases the random outsiders and leaves the regular insiders to hope for more. Should be the other way round in my opinion but that's indeed only my opinion.

It was supposed to be just a simple feature I could implement in a day, but as you point out, it was clearly not robust enough to avoid complaints. Though it's taken longer than I would have liked to get everything working, the feature is now more intelligent and will only resize an image if needed for your browser window, with accommodations for both guests and logged in users.

The feature does not work with Mobile version. Why? :indiff:
The Mobile skin is basic by design and will not implement this feature.

The current changes have literally made this perfect in my eyes, Jordan. Friggin' awesome.

👍

Woah nice! Thanks Jordan.

I was going to say that the auto-resizing function was not working, until I saw that modifications were made for the better. It's perfect the way it is now and will please everyone. :D

Jordan, complaints will always happen and it's sometimes difficult to digest them, but it is the only way to aspire and achieve perfection. 👍

For some reason my images don't automatically resize even though I haven't checked the box in my profile to disable it. Did I miss something?

It detects your monitor size, so if you have a larger monitor they won't be resized.

Gotcha, I guess since I have a 23" monitor and a 42" TV I won't be seeing it any time soon . Thanks for the clarification 👍

Thank you Jordan.  :D

At last I can see all the image on my small 5:4 19" monitor.
