As long as it won't look worse than before, I'm okay with it. I just hope my PAL PS2 will play the japanese version using an RGB cable. I'm not an expert on this issue, but I know that there is a PS2 -> VGA converter out there that only works with the v9 and v10 PS2s (I have a v4) because the older ones can't put out the correct picture format.

EDIT:
I attached a picture of it. It only seems to work with progressive input, so I'm not sure older PS2s will be able to produce 525p.

That's a video adapter for connecting your PS2 to a computer monitor. It looks like RGB, or component (US), is the needed input.

Yep, it needs YUV input, which you can also get out of a PAL PS2 if you use a component cable. The problem is, as the converter says, that it only works with the latest models of the PS2. That's why I'm a bit worried that these new formats in GT4 won't work with my older PS2. Actually this has nothing to do with the converter itself, but it proves that there is a difference between the output of the v1-v8 and the v9-v10 PS2 models.

Before anyone gets too excited about possible high-res video output, I'd like to say that if anything, it's probably only for photomode renders (i.e. playing a high-res slideshow on an HDTV).

WHERE can I get one of those adapters????????????????????????

I don't have a problem with that. So long it's 1080i, I don't care what it's for. I bet you're right, though.

RGB in Europe and YUV are different! If you want to see Progressive your TV must have an YUV input. Only Plasma, LCD or Beamer have this input. Normal TV´s didn´t have YUV.
I also believ that this option is for Photo Mode

About the commercial
is it trying to say GT4 is falling from the sky?
and think PD is THE god?

while that would be cool, i think this just means GT4 scaled up to 1080i like we explained earlier. i doubt that the PS2's 4 MB of framebuffer is enough even for just high res photos.

Sven
The PS2 stat sheet at us.playstation.com says the system can output 1280x1024. Not quite as much as 1080i, but enough for photomode renders.
Photomode has already been confirmed to be 1280x960 though. So who knows what 1080i means, maybe it's a 30fps hi-res option?

Guys... why are you still "wondering" about this, we allready answered this in this thread, it's UPSCALING to 1080i, this doesn't mean more resolution. it just means 480i on a 1080i timing.

No. 1280 X 960 is good enough to be considered Hi-scan 1080i. Remember, 1080 is the highest possible resolution, and not the lowest. The lowest resolution, and still be considered "1080i" is 920. So, 960 obviously covers that.

BTW, what are you talking about "timing"? I've never heard that term used before.

guess we'll have to wait and see, but i strongly doubt the PS2's framebuffer is enough for that res, i know it's not enough for 3d, but maybe for a still picture it will be enough... lets wait and see. just one week...

edit: forgot to add, "timing" is used to specify frequencies, like for instance the frequency on my monitor right now is 77.1 khz / 85 hz.
so basicly when you reffer to a resolution being scaled up to a different frequency it's used to specify that. it's common lingo for PC users with HDTV capable videocards.
