The shuffle gets its buttons back:

The Nano becomes a touchscreen (would make for a cool watch, right?):

And the iPhone 4 gets slimmed down into the new iPod Touch:

The iPod Classic remains un-updated, which is very disappointing (though there may be an unannounced, internal update in the near future - I remember that when the iPhone 3GS was announced Apple used the 3GS's audio internals for the headphone out on the Classic). Where's my retina-displayed, HD video enabled Classic, Apple? It'd be awesome considering the high capacity.

Not terribly thrilled. That new Nano might be clever but it's biblically ugly. Not to mention that it's probably horrid to hold in your hand. And I don't want to flash my album covers at passers by. Or indeed secure a desirable £160 device to my clothes with nothing but a tiny clip. Not to menion that the new Touch is just cheeky - a camera that can't take photos? Give it up. If people want an iPhone they'll buy one, you don't need to deliberately chop half the features to entice them further.

And it irritated me too that Steve just broadly announced an 'entirely new iPod range' and then forgot the Classic completely. Particularly when it's the only iPod left that actually looks like an iPod. In fact I might go buy one out of nostalgia before they inevitably kill it off.

I'm starting to get annoyed with Steve's current obsession to make things smaller, too. The Nano used to be a nice size - you could slip it in your pocket without noticing, but it was still nice to hold in your hand and use. That new one looks evil. He's done the same thing with the mighty mouse and iPhone 4, too - they're both comparatively smaller and more uncomfortable to use than their predecessors.

STOP MAKING THINGS TINY AT THE EXPENSE OF ERGONOMICS.

So, if I'm looking at that correctly, I assume the iPod Touch's Facetime will become just like the iPhone 4's; a gimmick people hardly use b/c both callers are rarely ever in a Wifi-zone at the same time.

Fixed that for you.

Yeah I'm just gonna drop off to best-buy and make use the last of my ipod classic warranty. Steve jobs SHOULD NOT touch the classic. It's fine the way it is. I don't need a touch screen for my music and videos.

Or audio quality apparently

ZING!

What are you talking about, Cody? I've had my iPod classic (first generation) for nearly 4 years now I think and I've never had a better music player. Hell, I even miss my old iPod even with the iPod on my iPhone...

Unless the stuff you download to your playlist have crappy bandwidth or whatever, yeah, you're going to notice difference. But I refuse to believe there will be a quality difference when playing the exact same file with the exact same headphones on 2 players. I'm glad they didn't fancy up the iPod classic, I will never love a music player as much as I loved my classic.

Ahh! Touch the Classic! Did anybody else get that?

I've got my iPod Classic, and I probably always will. It's a good simple iPod with a scroll wheel. When I bought it, it was either the 120gb or an 8gb Touch. Why a touch? I could have 120gb's of music and movies. Or I could have 8gb's of stupid apps like fake guns and "That's What She Said" buttons. No contest there!

Although, just put a wrist strap on the new nano and it would be pretty cool!

But how much of that 120GB do you ever listen too? I've pretty much gathered that I'm never going to listen to 8GB's worth of music between times on my PC so anymore is useless.

Plus you miss out on this:

Language Warning.

Honestly I make use of about 15GBs of my 80GB classic just for music. What takes up the space is all the files I store on it. I'd rather listen to what my mood wants than firing a virtual gun at everyone. It would get dead boring in a few minutes so it's kinda of a waste.

I have owned my classic for 3 years so far. The battery life is starting to fade away and it has a few dents. I have also noticed the responsiveness of the click wheel go down due to wear and tear. It's about time for the 3 year old to retire and a new classic to come in.

I can only imagine the look on someone's face driving next to him.

I have about 20gb's of music and about 40gb's of video. And that number grows almost every day. So yes I do need more than 8gb's of space. I would have filled up that touch in a heart beat!

I'll admit I became a bit over excited about the new iPod nano until I read Jon's post. So true.. The Shuffle now is what I always thought it would come out as.

"It can record 720p high definition video and take photos with its back camera."

So Apple actually backed down from their nonsense regarding the Shuffle's redesign? I can't think of a time in recent history where they have ever done that.

iPod nano (3rd gen was an ugly SOB, so the 4th gen was just a repackaging of the 2nd gen).

I heard the new iPod touch doesn't have a built-in microphone so it's a bummer. Recording at 720p without audio would be pretty meaningless.

It has a microphone, how else would FaceTime work?

Opinions:

Shuffle - Great... but why not just stick with the 2nd gen model? That was just as good.

Nano - Should've just given the nano a retina display and made the new one the shuffle. I like the idea, but seriously, guys... it really should be the shuffle. it's half an iPod! it just doesn't feel right.

Classic - Keep it the way it is... just like you SHOULD'VE done with the nano. Sheesh.

Touch - Great! I'm an avid iPod touch user myself, and the only problems I saw previously have now been fixed. Better glass, better display, and a microphone.
...in other words, I'm buying one.

I think I'll wait until there's an updated version of the iPt 4G with the iPhone's 5MP camera before upgrading from my third-gen iPt. :D

This is my take on all the annoucements,

Ping - Big mistake to not make it a full on social network because it would instantly decimate Facebook. Google Me will be coming soon and that will steal the show because it is a worthy challenger.

New iPod Shuffle - Obivously learned that trying to use something soley with your voice was never going to work, it think the old one looked nicer (more like a lighter) but this one has gone back to the look of the previous generation. Its looks really old already!

New iPod Nano - Looks like something another MP3 player maker would make, like something that Korean tech companies have done successfully for a while. It doesnt scream Apple to me all, it does look nice but probably not comfortable to use. Should have had a retina display considering the size. It would better worn as a watch and I'm sure a million aftermarket straps will come out for it.

New iPod Touch - Shame its not in the iPhone 4 case but its nice in a way to keep the mirror back heritage going. In a way its actually turned out better looking and slimmer. Good that its up to spec with the retina display and A4 chip. The camera is a waste of time to me and I hope it doesnt add to the price.

New Apple TV - Good they didnt call it iTV but its on the level of stupidity as the iPod Hi Fi. I dont see it doing well with such gimped fuctionality, a real step backward from the old one.

The No Show iPod Classic - I feel slightly sad that the iPod as we knew it is slowly becoming extinct. The Classic is the sole remaining iPod to have a portable HDD and full size clickwheel (trackpad) both of which are dying off in the industry. I know we are in a new generation and some are even too young to remember the monocrome iPod days but I can't help but feel nostalgic looking back. I'm sure it will run another year and then be killed off.

I am thinking of finally buying a Touch now but I find my self strangely attracted to the new Nano. I realy wanted a Zune HD but MS doesnt seem to want to sell them .

The iPod Touch 4 doesn't need to be in the iPhone4's case...which is kind of bulky all things considered.

I stand corrected :P

Although 960x720px is a ridiculous size. What is that, 0.7 of a megapixel?

What irritates me is that Apple TV could genuinely be a useful device if Apple weren't so intent on monopolising. If they'd stuck iPlayer, 4OD etc on there (as Sony have done with their Bravia internet video thing) I'd actually be interested. But of course they're not interested in offering the likes of Top Gear for free through iPlayer when they can charge $0.99 an episode through their store. Also think I spotted a wee 'Only available to watch on Apple TV' notice when he was renting a film. Why can't I watch it through iTunes on my laptop too?

Nobody will buy it.

Shuffle - FINALLY! The older one was horrible

Nano - Cool but have fun tapping icons with your fingers.. tell me when you're mad at your big fingers

Itouch - Here's the real reason I posted. I like the new ipod touch.. but I wouldn't buy it because of this:

http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_28it/index.html?country=us&lang=en

this

http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_32it/index.html?country=us&lang=en

and this

http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_43it/index.html?country=us&lang=en

Cheaper than Itouch and uses Andriod. Also has a mini HDMI output, a stand, camera and more. Don't forget to check out the other PMPs from Archos too.

The Archos doesn't have the ability to make internet phone calls from what I can see. That's a huge plus with the iPod Touch, you'll essentially be able to make it into a portable Skype phone.
