Toyota and Lexus to get TMG performance sub brand

However, going into the future we may see TMG play a much more important role in Toyota’s production car business.

Over the past year TMG has been testing a Lexus LS sedan powered by a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with 650 horsepower on tap. Though strictly a one-off concept developed for testing purposes, the high-performance LS hints at a possible TMG-tuned version of the luxury sedan that could be offered to the public as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and rumored BMW M7.

In addition to the potent powerplant, the Lexus LS concept also featured an aggressive bodykit, wider tracks front and rear, and sports-tuned suspension. A public unveiling is expected at the Essen Motor Show in Germany this September.

Essentially Toyota’s equivalent to AMG or BMW M, TMG would not only focus on Lexus models but Toyotas too, though right now only high-end models are being considered as part of the program, so we’re unlikely to see a TMG-tuned Scion FR-S anytime soon.

At the moment the project is still in the planning stages, though a final decision is expected to be made by the end of the year. The biggest hurdle remains developing powertrains that can meet tough new emissions rules. Another issue is determining whether to adopt new TMG branding or stick with the TRD branding used in the past on some performance-oriented Toyotas.

I thought that Lexus had F and that was the Lexus performance brand.

Yeah, there's an interesting mix. I think F will remain Lexus' top-level branding (particularly as they've just launched a range of F-Sport models as the sub-F sporty versions), and TMG may be reserved for the really mental stuff - think along the lines of an IS-F TMG, in the same vein as a CLK AMG Black Series to a regular AMG.

Sounds too much like "TMZ", or for those not in the know...Jalopnik.

I'm starting to miss those Lexus ride and drives...

After watching the vid and listening to the sound, I can't say I heard a turbo noise from the Lexus. Not that one isn't there, I just didn't hear it. That said, I heard a lot of exhaust, very deep exhaust. Should be interesting. 👍
Doubt its a turbo. :indiff:

I would rather see TRD make a come back then see TMG. The only places I see the TRD stickers and badges are on upgraded trucks and Scion TCs with the factory body kits. I would really like to see more from TRD, for it to become a sub brand or at least the highest trim level for the sport cars. I know that Scion is using TRD for the FR-S, so maybe TMG will be the Lexus equivalent?

Back on topic, I love the performance that has been coming from Lexus recently. Not a fan of this cars looks, but if the numbers are to be believed, then it will still be a car to be aware of. I know Lexus has been criticized for being to bland in their styling so I applaud them for taking a risk, but it's just not for me. I know that their are rock/sports/music stars that will dig it and buy at least one.

I think the body kit looks quite good because it seems like they are evoking the look of the old Toyota Tom's Chaser.

However I hope they don't call it a TMG edition, firstly because the TMG logo is a shameless rip off of the AMG logo and secondly this is a Lexus and shouldn't have anything 'Toyota' on it.

Why shouldn't it have anything Toyota on it? Lexus is owned by Toyota and the cars are built in Toyota plants, it is a Toyota.

-> I'm at lost...

TMG - Toyota/Lexus tuning arm for Europe?

F-Sport - Lexus tuning arm Worldwide?

TRD - Toyota/Scion tuning arm for the rest of the World!?

^ What would be the purpose of the F-Sport then? And whatever happend to TOM'S?

^ They specializes Toyota too, right?

:dunce:

I think they will be treating the F-Sport line up as a trim model, were as the TRD/TMZ will be treated as tuner companies. I would love to see Tom's get back into Toyota's, there hasn't been a decent model for them to play with until recently. Maybe with the FR-S they will return. Here's hoping.

What would be the purpose of the F-Sport then?

To clarify, F-Sport is simply a trim line, a bit like accessory M trim lines on BMWs. 'F' is the top models, dedicated performance cars, like the IS-F. TMG strikes me as an extra performance arm - think of it in the same way as a Mugen Type-R. Type-R is the top one, Mugen is another step up.

Why shouldn't it have anything Toyota on it? Lexus is owned by Toyota and the cars are built in Toyota plants, it is a Toyota.

Because the Toyota name is a lesser brand and you don't want it on a premium car marque which they are trying to distinguish as its own entity. It makes no sense to put Toyota Motorsport badges on it and should carry the 'F Sport' name instead. Its like having VW badges on an Audi.

The way I see it is...

TMG is just a Toyota racing team (like what Toyota Racing was in F1).

F Sport is Lexus' tuning division (like AMG).

TRD is Toyota's tuning division.

TOM's is the equivalent of Alpina or Brabus, 3rd party tuners. I think TOM'S is now defunct and was only really Japan based.

Here comes the LS-F. That car doesn't look too bad. But I can agree the F badge isn't enough if it has over 600 horsepower. Maybe it would be a higher rated version of the F, like the AMG Performance Pack Mercedes cars? But I don't know what to call if not F Sport. But it doesn't look too bad. Bur really, 4500 pounds? Sure, this is a big luxury sedan, but that's heavy.

Aren't 7 series and S-classes around the same?

Aside from these teaser photos, TMG also said that the vehicle will be powered by a bespoke twin-turbo V8 5.0-liter engine with more than 600 hp (447 kW) which will be enough for a top speed of about 200 mph (322 km/h).

And the best part of the the car a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 641hp and 524 lb-ft of torque.

Oh good lord the back end looks absolutely hideous.

What have they done to the beautiful and elegant design that was the LS? I personally think the overall appearance is trying too hard to be an AMG black Mercedes.

Hey, wait. 650hp twin turbo version of the IS-F motor...

Isn't this the engine that was supposedly going to go into the Esprit before Bahar screwed everything up?

Not sure what to think about it. The back end and the vents/scoops near the front fenders are totally over the top and look pretty silly. On the other hand, it's a Lexus LS with a 650hp V8. Hilarious.

I actually love the way that looks, especially in that colour. It looks really beefed up while still retaining that 'luxury car' vibe underneath the extra bits.

I like it, also from the outside. It is a bit over the top, but it is kinda like a TMG show-off car, so it makes sense.

The front bit feels a bit Ford Australia to me, but all around a nice shape. The numbers aren't bad looking either.
