You mean, "Developing Games, The Crytek Way"?

Bingo! :p

You know what would be nice? A PC/Console port of Warhead, exclusive to Cafe.

...or all of this turns out to be factual I may just have to purchase this on tech merit alone. I did it for the PS3 and 360...leave me alone, I'm a nerd.

👍

512mb RAM = fail.
Should have 2gb minimum.

Why? The PS3 has only 256mb of RAM (512 combined). If these specs are accurate Nintendo's console will have 1536mb combined. For what its doing its more than enough.

512mb RAM = fail.
Should have 2gb minimum.

For what reason? Unless there are multiple (and I do mean multiple) accounted resources running in the background there's no need for it.

There's a huge advantage. More RAM can do more in games and system UI.

Ps3 sucks for RAM. Everyone knows this. It's pathetically way too freaking low. Too many out of memory errors just using the browser. Kaz said the ps3 is short on RAM. Other devs have too.

The only reason that much RAM would be a huge advantage is if the games and system UI were spectacularly poorly programmed.

I hope you aren't basing "Cafe needs more RAM" on how terrible the PS3 browser is. The PS3 browser is terrible because it is terrible. It is not terrible because the PS3 only has 256MB of RAM, because there are things with a fraction of the PS3's RAM that run the internet far better.

"And PS3 is short on RAM" is not a very good excuse to throw 8 times as much RAM into a system that will for the first few years be made up largely of ports from the PS360 anyways.

There's a huge advantage. More RAM can do more in games and system UI.

Unless the games for Cafe and the UI are "optimized" like Crysis, there's absolutely no need for 2GB of main memory in a system that, like the Wii and Gamecube, are already going to be light on resources anyway. And we don't even know the L1/L2 cache sizes yet. So to be honest...512MB could already be overkill.

Ps3 sucks for RAM. Everyone knows this. It's pathetically way too freaking low. Too many out of memory errors just using the browser. Kaz said the ps3 is short on RAM. Other devs have too.

And that has what to do with Cafe? The PSP also has a horrible browser...but that's because the browser itself is already horrible.

----

And I've basically said exactly what Logan did. :grumpy:

Huh? How could 512MB be overkill? That is NONSENSE! That only the double amount of the ps3 and it is FACT that BOTH the ps3 and 360 have simply too little ram, and v-ram. 2GB may be too much, but certainly not 512MB, I guess 1GB or 1.5GB would have been ideal, let us not forget that in the year 2012! 1080p and anti-aliasing should be standard, therefore more ram would be a good idea, oh, and the system has to survive AT LEAST 4 years technically, so people, please stop this "ZOMG who needs more than 512MB ram" attitude. That is stupid. For how many years now a PC can have 512MB, like for...8-9 years? How could THAT be TOO MUCH NOW? There is simply no sense is saying something like this...geez.

What if you wanted to have 5 full games active at once, and could just switch between them in a second, if they were stored in memory and could access their own data files from the HDD, I would say 6GB ram would be needed?
Why should the notion of when you want to play another game involve exiting the one you are playing and begin loading the new one etc. and then changing your mind for some reason and wish to try another game.
Surely the flexibility of multi open games will happen in the future when resources permit.

Why would you want 5 games running at the same time  I'm going to say what everybody else has already said: It isn't a PC. It doesn't need the same amount of RAM as a PC.

The only reason not to would be price, as the reason why is obvious, it's a useful function and better to have it than not have it, you agree?
If it's not essential it could be optional, maybe some people would buy a console with the premium 6GB ram fitted, which would let them have instant access to their favourite games which are constantly running, rather than have all the bother of quitting, saving, loading and waiting each and every time. The console could also have 5 seperate mini-HDD instead of 1 large one if that means it is quicker and more managable to keep 5 games running at the same time.
My point is just that many things can be fitted and be of use for some purpose or another. But will come at a price to the privileged buyer.

Yeah it's not a PC but PC's can have up to 32GB! of ram NOW, so WHY is it GOOD to have 1/64! of that amount in a HOME CONSOLE, even handhelds COULD have more memory nowadays.

Oh and besides, RAM is FAR cheaper nowadays, than it was years before.

Everyone saying the same dumb thing doesn't make it right.

You might as well say the Ariel Atom doesn't need a V8, or that non-luxury cars don't need large trunks. It's just plain stupid.

Bill Gates, replying to '640K ought to be enough for anybody:'
"I've said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough"

1080p and anti-aliasing should be standard, therefore more ram would be a good idea,
Which would be why it has a rumoured 1GB of VRAM and 16MB of built-in eDRAM. System RAM has almost nothing to do with that.

oh, and the system has to survive AT LEAST 4 years technically, so people, please stop this "ZOMG who needs more than 512MB ram" attitude. That is stupid.
And why does it need more than 512MB of RAM, since you are so sure?

For how many years now a PC can have 512MB, like for...8-9 years? How could THAT be TOO MUCH NOW?
Because this isn't a PC, and you pretty obviously don't understand why modern PCs need as much RAM as they do.

Everyone saying the same dumb thing doesn't make it right.
I hope you weren't near a mirror when you said that. Because I still haven't seen an explanation for why it needs more RAM.

Bill Gates, replying to '640K ought to be enough for anybody:'

XDR RAM isn't.

Stop specifying what the year is to justify your opinion of a console needing more RAM than it actually does. Have you ever heard of paging before? Better still, don't even answer that - why does Cafe need more than 512MB of system RAM, and for that matter do you even know what system RAM is actually used for? Oh, and for the record, system RAM has absolutely nothing to do with anti-aliasing as that's a filtering technique used to smooth out rough, jagged edges in either already rendered scenes or while the scene is still being drawn. Sound like something system RAM would be doing?

What if you wanted to have 5 full games active at once, and could just switch between them in a second, if they were stored in memory and could access their own data files from the HDD, I would say 6GB ram would be needed?

Why would you want to run 5 games simultaneously when you're only going to be playing one of them at a time? At best, it seems like you're vaguely attempting to say "media should be queued." which they already are. That's inefficient utilization of resources what you blurted out. :odd:

The only reason not to would be price, as the reason why is obvious, it's a useful function and better to have it than not have it, you agree?

No. Anything else?

If it's not essential it could be optional, maybe some people would buy a console with the premium 6GB ram fitted, which would let them have instant access to their favourite games which are constantly running, rather than have all the bother of quitting, saving, loading and waiting each and every time.

How lazy do you have to be that you have to have games constantly running in the background (using up resources and therefore creating massive paging footprints) just so you won't have to press a series of one, two or three buttons sitting in a chair? WUT?

The console could also have 5 seperate mini-HDD instead of 1 large one if that means it is quicker and more managable to keep 5 games running at the same time.

No. Just no.

My point is just that many things can be fitted and be of use for some purpose or another. But will come at a price to the privileged buyer.

I want you to get into the business and use some of these bright ideas with no (seemingly apparent) understanding of optimized architectures. Let me know how well your console with five random HDDs and a sixth larger one sells. Know what one of your first criticisms is going to be? "Why does this thing have six hard drives when one is more than enough?"

Yeah it's not a PC but PC's can have up to 32GB! of ram NOW, so WHY is it GOOD to have 1/64! of that amount in a HOME CONSOLE, even handhelds COULD have more memory nowadays.

*Buzzer sound*

PCs can, depending on what OS you're using, having in excess of 96GB, up to 192GB of system RAM. However, that's entirely dependent on the physical amount the motherboard can tolerate. And seeing as unless you're a visual designer, or you actually need 32GB for everyday usage...it's a waste. If you're running a PC that you just use to browse the web, play games on, and do the occasional editing in Photoshop than it's nothing but an e-peen flare. Why are you even bringing up how much RAM a PC can have anyway? As usual you seem to be under the impression (therefore not having any real idea what you're talking about) that consoles run full-fledged operating systems...but they don't. That's why PCs generally need as much as 4GB to negate slow downs and general hang-ups...because OS' are resource dependent - the less you have, the more the OS accesses your hard drive.

And, last I checked Rambus' XDR wasn't cheap.

I hope you realize -- you know what? I'm not even going to bother.

All this tech talk Is making me confused. I just want for next gen consles to have atleast present PC game graphics(Crysis 1 & 2, BattleField 3 etc.) with no frame rate issues. Hell, I dont even know what RAM, CPU, GPU, or drives are or what they mean. I could easily get fooled to buy a cheap computer.
What kind specs on the next gen consels should they atleast have for my PC-like "wants"?

Basically exactly what consoles have now. And you're not going to get PC game graphics as there are too many variables involved. What you will get is better use of whatever graphic API Cafe uses as there's no interference from an abundant OS. There are no drivers to worry about, no need to worry about improving your load times by either buying an SSD or a WD Raptor, and.

Look at GT5, Halo 3, Gears 2, etc, etc...that's what you can expect on Cafe at the very least (if the specs are factual, and in the case of GT5 you have a developer so anally-retentive about visuals).

So in laymans terms.

Can I see Yoshi's bum hole?

But what if I want to play Half Life 2? You know, 8 separate times at once.

Toronado
But what if I want to play Half Life 2? You know, 8 separate times at once.

Uh what? Why? How? Im sure the maximum controllers allowed are 4. Not sure on that mind.

Pretty sure the max amount of screens would be 4 too. Like Mario kart.

Wait for E3 mate. Then you might know more.

Is yours a busy house then?

So its a fantastic thing that Project Cafe isn't a computer.

Oh, I get it, because they crammed it into a Set-top Box and doesn't run Windows it's not a computer to you. Well, too bad, because you don't get to decide what words mean.

Alternatively what if I want to run Crysis 6, 7, or 8 times? It can barely run once.

Oh, what about having Media Center and Photoshop opened ten times, respectively? :D

Because. Having 32GB of RAM allows you to do wondrous things my friend. Get with the program!

No, I quoted and was replying to the other guy. But since you're on his bandwagon, sure, I will attempt to educate you out of your ignorance. I may not know much about a lot of things, but being a programmer who's worked on some of these systems I think I know a thing or two. :)

Most audio programs like ProTools or Live that allow you to edit audio eat up 32 GB of RAM like it was a kid with candy. You want loud, booming engine noises with dynamic adjustability, pitch-tuning and decay at 96kHz on the fly to your 7.1 audio theater without compression from a video game? While 32 photo-realistic cars zoom around photo-realistic tracks with real-life physics, working mirrors, smoke, dust, hi-resolution textures, real damage, and have it all run at 60FPS? In 3D? While your downloads and friends list and chat is managed in the background?

You need way more than 32GB of RAM, sorry to tell you. Don't worry, though, the processor that can do that in a set-top box hasn't been invented yet.

In 20 years time 32GB of RAM will seem paltry just like 640k doesn't even seem feasible today. And we're not even talking about 32GB of RAM!

...seriously what do you guys have against RAM?

If you need 32GB of ram to do that, it means you coding is crap. Just saying.

Okay, then why has it not been done? We have 32GB of RAM right now in PCs.

And why haven't you produced a ProTools competitor with your amazing coding skills? You know they charge like $300 for the base version... just think, you could be a millionaire with your implied coding skills. I imagine all of Silicon Valley will bow to you when you figure out how to process uncompressed high-res 7-channel discrete audio in real time with only 512MB of RAM and a 2GHz CPU.

(Edit) I may not be a great programmer, but I was a system tools engineer for 2 years and worked on two shipped games, one for Xbox 360 and one for Wii. There isn't a developer in the entire industry who would say any of these consoles or the computers they develop on have "enough" RAM.
