Alright I plan on picking up a PS2 next week as I can't afford a PS3 and need a GT fix. Currently they are only $99 but I figure I could save $20 or so by getting a used one from Gamecrazy. Do you think it would be a safe buy to do this or should I stick with a new one?

Edit: Also other than GT3, 4 and possibly TT what other games would you suggest? I mostly like racing and sports.

Edit 2: I'm closing ths thread as I bought it already. A new one also.

I bought a used PS2 years ago and it's still working just fine, I don't think you're going to have a problem.

For racing games you should pick up Enthusia, I always thought it was better then GT in terms of realism. If you want something fun you could get some of the Tokyo Xtreme series games, I've never played a bad one.

I'd say it depends on the warranties you get for the used one. Over here (Germany) you get 2 year warranty for new items so I'd go for a new one. My wife bought a PS2 bundled with 2 controllers, 2 mics, 1 memory card and some Sing Star version for 99EUR 2 weeks ago. For that price I wouldn't bother myself with a used one. You could even sell the mics and Sing Star stuff for 20 bucks and still be at the same price as the used one ;)
As for the games: apart from GT I really like Burnout Takedown! Enormous fun especially when racing in murtiplayer

20 bucks is worth the new console, imo.

Racing & sports:
- Burnout 3: Takedown (or Revenge, I hear it's about the same)
- Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix (classic arcade physics in a modern game, fun while the career lasts)
- Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Underground 2, and/or Most Wanted (depending on your taste in cars)
- Suzuki TT Superbikes (only has the Isle of Man TT course, in full and in sections, but the physics are supposed to be the best; they definitely feel top-notch)
- Test Drive: Unlimited (free-roaming Oahu in exotics with a cockpit view? Never gets old. There's even a race track you can visit!)
- ToCA Race Driver 3 (epic track selection)

I can't think of any PS2-exclusive sports games...
- NBA Street
- NFL Street
- SSX 3
- Tony Hawk's Underground

Others:
- God of War
- Killzone
- Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 (if you haven't, play MGS1 from PS1)
- Resident Evil 4
- Sly Cooper

Second hand is fine, mine is 4-5 years old not a single problem. I have rectified a number of my friends old machines, simply by doing a simple lens clean.

One of the best games on the console is the GTA games (there is a racing element to it!)
For pure racing you cant go wrong with the TOCA games, varied racing and on the whole realistic/enjoyable. Try Midnight club 2 + 3.

Hold on. Why the HECK doesn't anyone mention GameStop online ?? Cheapest guaranteed to work consoles ever, don't bid on anything

Only thing to bear in mind about buying an older machine is the fact that some will not come with an integral Ethernet connection for on-line play etc (mine hasnt!). Newer models wil have this built into the console so you should be good to go.

i'd get a new one, and I agree with enthusia. Man that game's realistic, but it makes a weird noise when up shifting in a manual - plus I think the cars slide just a bit too much.
