New ps2 issues

Right, my good old ps2 has broken putting a stop to gt3 for awhile, obviously a major problem. The problem is that i have reservations about the new model, reviews suggest a poorly made follow up to the original, riddled with heating problems and easily broken components. I just wanted to know if any players on GTP own the new model or can attest to these being merely rumours or actual problems. Sorry to moderators and angry forum browsers this post is breaking laws by being in the wrong area, flamings are welcome as are helpful comments.

I bougt a pstwo recently and haven't had any problems at all with it, haven't used it that much though, the longest time it has constant been turned on is mabye 5 hrs.

No heating probs so far, really like the built in network adapter.

Thread placement is just fine. :) No flaming here.

Sorry I can't be of much help to you as I haven't jumped the "slim line" ship just yet. Originally I figured I would wait and get a PS2+GT4 package as my Version 4 PS2 would surely be dead by then. Well it's still working with FULL hard drive support. Something that they took out of their new design. I haven't heard of any users having heat issues except for the ones that have it sitting on deep shag carpet and have been gaming for 20+ hours straight. Not too many of those guys hanging around. I would hope and trust that Sony wouldn't take their console and ruin it by faulty design and inferior parts.

 and good luck.

I too would be surprised to see Sony ship a bad product this far into the line. Though I wish they would have at least put a bay in it for a laptop sized hard drive.

Pako: My older PS2 is going strong but I still plan to buy any GT4 racing pack they decide to sell here - hopefully it will be a PSTwo specially colored and such. The PS2 I currently have is from the GT3 racing pack, and I'd love to have two consoles to race on.

it gets hott sometimes but as long as you dont leave it sideways for days its fine... if it starts gettin hott i just stand it up... oh yeah, NO PROBLEMS

Zeratul -- I think we've discussed this before in this Forum (although in a semi-unrelated thread, so it's fine). Those reviews about the PStwo having all of those problems are a bit of a myth. The problems aren't very common, either. Go for the PStwo. It's worth the buy. I haven't had a freeze, overheat, or anything wrong happen with mine, and I've had a few 12 hour marathons playing on it with Blake here, so it can run perfectly fine for long periods of time. As long as you don't do too many marathons. ;)

My slimline ps2 gets really hot after just 3 or so hours... but my old... fat ps2 doesnt work any more so i hope gt4 works probably on it when it comes out

Yeah, from what I've seen it's fine. I've still got an old PS2 from when they first came out, it freezes occasionally with GTA but really no other problems. The real tests will come when I get GT4 and me and my friends will be doing 24hr endurance races in 1 sitting, without pausing hopefully 👍

ok put some more use into the PStwo.. I have a vert stand for mine and it goes for good 12 hour marathons of killzone/gt3/DVDs almost every day.. no problems yet =]

Well, well, another fellow GT3 Racing pack owner! Mine too, a V4 35001 PS2, running strong thanks to a brand new laser unit (a 400C instead of the original 400B). When my PS2 started with reading errors, i thought it would idea to get the PSTwo, but, as you can see under my avatar, I live in sunny Rio de Janeiro, a place well known for its extremely high temperatures ALL YEAR LONG. And, after browsing some specialized PS2 forums in Brazil, the verdict was always the same: for our hot climate, the PSTwo is utterly CRAP! Many units already "melted", showing the Slim PS2's enormous disadvantage at heat dissipation. Everyone pointed out tha same solution: if you have an older PS2 with reading probs, fix it (laser unit, LA, whatever). If not, buy the japanese PS2 BroadBand Pack, that keeps the old style and HDD expansion bay (in a semi-translucent body - http://www.jp.playstation.com/php/jacket/disp.php?num=scph50000mbnh).

Now, my 35001 is running like a brand-new unit... no noises coming from the drive, reading times are quick and, best of all, I can play any game for 24-hours straight and, in the end, get the disc from the console and realize that it is completely cool, not a hint of heat...

The bottom (horizontal bottom) of it gets pretty hot. I'm thinking of buying a stand, because unlike the old model, there are no mechanical parts that could be hit by the disc. The disc is also held in PSX-style.

My only problem is the low angle that the tray opens up to.

We bought an additional PStwo after the good old PS2 (having been used heavily since November 2001) started showing a few signs of old age. I don't have any concrete complaints about the PStwo, it does what it is asked to do.

However, the power supply of our PStwo emits a very very very faint high frequency sound. You can't notice it during the day because of all the background noize. I can only hear it when I come home in the middle of the night. Thats about the only thing that I can think wrong about it.

Anyone with the new PStwo have any trouble with their memory card slot? I have to wiggle the card around in there until it recongizes it sometimes. The player 2 slot is ok and the card works fine in other ps2's. Should I send my PStwo in for repairs or something?

Really? You mean when it's off? I think you oughtta replace, mine doesn't do that at all; quiet as a mouse with disc reading noises here and there...

Doesn't happen to me. I'd get a replacement if it were possible.

My PS2 was an GT3 bundle also. I wasn't going to buy an PS2 until the price came down, but when everybody else started talking about GT3, I gave in and purchased one($330 for the bundle). I sold this PS2, because it was lacking progressive scan and the network adapter, but it was still working perfectly.

My brother purchased this slim PSTwo in late Oct./early Nov., and are still working fine. It gets warm after while on the "horizontal" bottom surface, kind of like Giancarlo noted, but not to a point of "hot". I also agree with him on the low opening agle of the lid.

A local EB Games left their PSTwo on for a few months straight. It was during the hurricane season when all the hurricanes hit Florida. Not once did it turn off or not work properly. 👍

I bought my new model PS2 less than three weeks ago, and its already dead. worked fine the first week and now it wont even turn on.

But i cant say its Sonys fault, i know how Fedex handles their packages.

I have a bunch of used memory cards and i noticed that the PS2 won't read Nyko cards, but it'll read all my used Playstation 1 cards just fine. Other than that..no problems with heat. My only complaint is that the buttons to open the disc cover & turn on the game are rather inaccessible, but this is a minor annoyance.
