Well I'm sorreee, but I just opened by RSS aggregator now.

And I need to adjust my cron right now. Damn.

If the light changes colors quickly that will end up causeing more accidents. Easier way to prevent speeding....Up the speed limit.

Eh....I'd give that the "bad idea." That stupid light will be red all the time. And....it would probably make a lot of people run that red light more often. Now, then they would probably put one of those red light cameras on that intersection. Then, all that would result is a whole lot of tickets. More money for Pleasanton! So then everyone will be putting those in...:banghead:

I didn't click on the link, but is this the light that is supposed to turn red if a sensor picks up your car speeding. If so, it was on Tech Live. They asked this one old truck driver guy if he liked it and he said it stinks because it would just make him run red lights.

I couldnt agree more, especially here in the "Speed camera" state

Just asking here, Those that have speed cameras in their respective towns/cities/states, what is the tolerance on them?

Over here its a whopping 3%, not bad considering the Australian tolerance for speedometers is 10%

So if you are doing 104km/h in a 100 zone you can be nailed for the single 1km/h you are over

Pardon my French, but thats ****ing crap

The guidelines in the UK are 10% + 2mph, but they are only guidelines and local authorities can set whatever tolerance they like.

However speed cameras are facing a huge backlash in the UK at the moment.

For years we have been told (incorrectly) that speed is a factor in 1/3 of all accients, now new figures show that its actualy around about 7% (as a few of us have been saying for years).

The number one cause of accidents in the UK is poor observation, closely followed by lack of skill. Speeding ranks seventh and even then thats 'inapropriate speed for the conditions', which is not the same as speeding.

Problem is that the UK government has relied on cameras so much over the last 10 years that we now have very few traffic police on the road, so you can drive like an idiot, have no insurance, tax, etc and have no chance of getting stopped. Cameras make no difference to these people as they normally have not registered the car, so will never get caught by a camera.

However drive over the limit and a fixed or mobile camera will get you, fine and points on your licence.

I got hit by a mobile unit last November for 82 in a 60, the road was empty, clear and out in the countryside. 3 points on my licence (12 and you lose it for a year) and a fine.

I have no problem with the general principal of speed cameras, if they are sited correctly (outside schools, etc) and not used as revenue generation schemes to replace traffic police.

I have never seen a camera in the UK outside a school, but have seen plenty on empty counrty road.

I know Australia has a very similar problem to the UK, no idea what the rest of the world have to put up with, come on, ley us know.

I kinda think its a good idea. But i would swear that my town allready has one. There's this one light that, if i'm speeding, always turns just as i come to it. Maybe its just luck but oh well.

Same here, there is a sign that says light set to 40 MPH, so you either have to go the speed limit then mash the throttle so the buy behind you gets the red or go fast, once the light initiates its yellow you go even faster to beat the light

It's a limit for a reason. It isn't just a ballpark estimate for the speed you should travel.

There should be no tolerance. That being said, the speed limit should be raised.

It depends what state you're in. In victoria we're they have (possibly) the best roads, they are notorious for hiding in bushes and stupid stuff like that. In NSW (from what I've seen) they take the more open approach which works better in my opinion. In NSW you see the camera slow down, dont get booked and everyones happy. In victoria on the other-hand you get a ticket a month later even though you've already ben mamed or whatever.

*Driving classic Mini Cooper*
*Light turns green*
*Mini inches slowly*
*Guy in Lambo approaches at 120*
*Lights suddenly turns Yellow then Red*
*What the #@$%??? I didn't even move a feet!!*

Now just look at us, we are such nerds. Someone makes a typographical error and about five people jump on his ass.

The ridicule the victim gets is still humorous nonetheless.

But this brings up another question... Which ticket costs more... Speeding? or running a red light? Because in this situation, if running a red light holds less of a consequence, screw the lights ill just roll threw em.

Over here, if you are a probationary driver, they have introduced a new law

5 points (we also have a 12 point limit over here) on your licence in any 12 months and kiss it goodbye for 6 months

So if you jump a red light and are speeding, its all over, or as a mate of mine (a copper:confused: ) told me, any combination of infringements and youre licence is gone

I read earlier about NSW police using cameras, I agree that if they are used in a sensible manner, in designated black spots (High accident areas) then that can only be a good thing

Using them on an open road where its dead straight for miles, and on a multi lane road is just ridiculous

I'll try and find a pic. of the bastardry that is going on with the speed cameras here in Vic.

For those in Vic, here are the locations of the fixed cameras:
Note the bold area

VIC (as reported in heraldsun)
"The 14 fixed camera traps across Melbourne, each with a bank of three cameras, are catching an average of 65,000 motorists a month. "

Ardeer: outbound lane, Western Ring Rd, on top of signs at the Western Hwy exit.
Laverton North: outbound lane, Western Ring Rd, hidden behind signs at the Boundary Rd exit.
Laverton North: inbound lane, Western Ring Rd, on top of a sign at the Boundary Rd exit.
Wandon: not yet operating. On the Hume Hwy, about 55km from Melbourne, just before the Whittlesea-Wallan Rd overpass.
Caulfield Nth: in bound lanes, Dandenong Rd at the corner of Orrong Rd. Camera testing site.
Glenroy: outbound lane, Western Ring Rd, on the Pascoe Vale Rd overpass.
East Keilor: outbound lane, Western Ring Rd, behind Keilor Park Drive overpass.
Sth Yarra: inbound lane, Monash Freeway, behind a sign just before Punt Rd crossover.
Rowville: intersection of Stud and Wellington roads.

Very hard to pic this one if he wasn't using the flash unit

Notice it's the usual maximum revenue procedure:
select a wide 4 lane road, with good visibility, setup on the downslope, and a 60kmh zone

date & time on pics is correct

I've heard of cases where they have been seen hiding behind trees and stuff like that, which really doesnt achieve anything.

Its only to increase the revenue, nothing else

[sarcasm] I'm glad they are saving my life be fining me for being 4km/h over the limit :irked: [/sarcasm]

I wonder what its like in Queensland? (Im going to Cairns on Friday) So yeh, I wont be able to post for a week or to maybe. I think its stupid though, if we were driving to Cairns we'd be going almost 2000km with a maximum speed limit of 110, thats a reasonable, minimum, law-abiding time of like 2.5-3.5 days. When I say reasonable I mean not driving non-stop for like 5 hrs at a time.
