New technology causes problems

I didn't mean to imply that you drive all out. However, I'm willing to bet that you would if given a chance to drive on the Autobahn. Many americans would.

Yes and no. If I was in a very fast sports car (praying for Z06), then hell ya I would attempt to max it out. Although I have read the Z06 gets very scary at 200mph. If I was in my car there would be no need for me to open it up because I can easily reach my max speed here in the US.

In my car, speeding at an average of about 80-85mph nets me 26-27mpg. Cruising at 70-75mph can yield 30-32mpg. That's a considerable gap, especially considering the fact that my "city" mileage is typically 26-28mpg if I'm lazy and pay no attention to conserving gas.

Of course, at 65mph I'm somewhere close to 3000rpm, and many smaller European cars are the same way, so that would explain why the Germans try to stay below 80mph. ;)

I haven't ever really calculated my highway mpg so I'm not sure about that. However I know alot about my city figures. If I drive very hard, the worst I can ever get is about 20mpg. If I drive conservative I can get up to 26mpg city. Its kind of a big difference I guess but to me not really. I average about 24 mpg. I guess one big advantage to me is I get $25 a week for gas (no not from my parents for those of you who are going to say I'm some snobby rich teenager). So in the big picture I don't worry all that much about my mpg.

I average about 40mpg in my 306 1.9 turbo, and about 27mpg in my Bora V5, I don't drive the notably faster Bora all that often.

Don't act so surprised. Even in Germany, on the limitless portions of the Autobahn, you can often find drivers limiting themselves to 100-130km/h. Why? It saves a lot of fuel, compared to going "all-out," and since petrol costs more than the equivalent of $6 per gallon over there, that means they're saving a good chunk of money. Oh, and of course, going slower is safer, too.
thats right, most drivers do 120 or 130kph because 130 is the suggested max speed on the autobahn and most people are just fine with these kind of speeds and either like to save some petrol or are just a little scared of going much faster.
Pretty much the only drivers you'll find barrelling down the left lane on the Autobahn are young/immature drivers, sportscar owners looking to have a little fun, someone who's really late for an appointment, or tourists from another country to whom limitless highways are a novelty.
that however, i wouldn't sign. speeds between 130-180kph are very commonly done by pretty much every sort of person. you get hatchbacks, minivans and sedans at such speeds, driven by regular people, people in a hurry or people who just enjoy driving a little faster.
drivers over here don't buy large displacement engines for the quarter mile times but for the autobahn. those who enjoy driving fast and can afford it cruise at over 200 if the road is clear...
i personally find 160kph (100mph) to be a perfectly fine cruising speed because it makes overtaking a lot easier. at 130 you get others doing 125 in front of you so overtaking takes a long time and you have to change lanes a lot because people also constantly come from behind.

That "Actually" was reffering to the top legal speed in Israel - the 90KM/h, even though it's more of a 90-100KM/h, since 20KM/h are deducted from the police readings, after a few trials...

And yeah - our Peugeot 306 1.4l Sedan (about 75HP) should get much better mileage at 90KM/h. Instead of 4000RPM, it's a lower 2500-3000RPM. The mileage wasn't calculated yet, because we (my family) never drove fast for long enough to calculate. However, I don't find straight-line speed that interesting. I find it more relaxing to cruise at 90KM/h with some Jazz, than speed at 120KMh/ and fear the police at every turn. Our car, however, can drive fast when others normally don't - corners, etc - it just has amazing grip, and by staying in the right gears, we can drive where others brake...

Agreed, 306's are superb round corners, my 306 grips the road really well, it's got very good feel in the steering too.
