Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z - and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp.

Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown.

Whether the final vehicle is sold as a Lexus or as a Toyota , it's likely that a limited production run of about 10,000 units is in order. Expect a debut at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show and an on-sale date soon after - with a price tag well over $100,000.

100,000 for 500 HP? No thanks, I'll wait for the GTR.

hmmmm, 100000 for 500 hp is a pretty good deal...but for that kind of money, they should take off the garbage bags before delivery !

Why are they always testing cars on Nurburing ?

I'm pretty sure teh GTR will be sub 100K with 500 ponies, TT with an anti lag system and all the goodies, so yeah I'll wait. :D

Toyota knows about the up and coming GT-R and its power. Maybe they are trying to beat out Nissan, making a rival that could put up with the GT-R. Something producing 500HP isn't going to be easy to take down for the Nissan GT-R.

Most likely this car will be a Lexus. The same with Nissan naming the GT-R as Infiniti GT-R.

Whatever the case is, it seems like Japanese manufactor is trying to make supercars now that the "agreement" is no longer.

Subaru, Nissan, and Toyota have stepped up.

Subaru with its prototype producing 400hp. Nissan with the GT-R, and now Toyota with this.

I have a hard time believing that Toyota will make a turnaround. It's been forever since we've gotten a high horsepower low(ish) weight car from them...and I don't think this will be it. My money says it will probably weigh in about the same as a supra...which isn't exactly on the thin side.

Why are you doubting Toyota so? I think they can do it. I hope they do it, and surprise us all. I mean Ford just recently released it's Ford GT not that long ago, it has 550hp and weighs in at about 3400lbs. It's very fast, even with it's weight.

So Toyota even if they produce a 500hp car on a 3400lbs it should still be very very quick. The Ford GT is estimated at around 150,000 dollars, and the Toyota should be cheaper therefore maybe being the better buy?

wow this is weird.

i have been drawing my own made-up car and it has an almost identical rear.

is it mr or still fr though?

Well at 100K they better reconsider the price tag, the GTR is slated for 500 HP, You can bet your moms accord that there will be parts aplenty for it too, that baby isn't staying stock for long.

Well, after you get your GT-R, I don't expect anyone to go ahead and modifiy it right after they just bought it. Im not rich. :(

The GT-R pricetag should be pretty heavy don't you think? Probably around 100G.

I was hoping more in the 60K range but hell I'd pay 100G, I've been waiting long enough for it. I'm not so much worried about the price as I am worried about the production #'s I'm sure demand will be very high, causing the prices to go even higher. But it's not like I'm ever planning to sell the thing so I suppose it doesn't matter. Either way as soon as they make bigger turbos, intake, exhaust etc, I'll be waiting with my baby! lol

Where do you get 100G from? Haha. You can't be that rich!

Hoping for it in the 60K range, I really doubt it. Let's just hope it's under 100K. Don't expect to get a 480hp + for around 60K.

It says that the price tag will be well over $100,000.

Also, the Ford GT can reach over 200mph.

Mitsubishi & Mazda are falling behind. In the early 90's they built the best Japanese sports cars & now they have nothing.

Mitsubishi has the Lancer Evolution and Mazda, RX8.

The Lancer isn't a sports car.

Ever since Mitsubishi got rid of the 3000GT, their role in the Japanese market has evaporated.

Why isn't the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution not a sport car? Care to explain, I have no idea why you don't think the Lancer Evolution is a sport car. Unless you consider it to be a sport sedan or something like that.

GTR_Guy, a loan. Haha. Interest is a ***** right?

The Evo is a rally-bred homologation type car, just like an Escort Cosworth or Lancia Delta Integrale. They aren't the same type of car as a Corvette, Supra, 3000GT, RX-7, Skyline, etc. They're all sportscars.

To me that's just a branch of type of sport cars. Maybe that's just me.

Whatever the case is, I still consider both Evo and WRX STi sport cars.

and yet the evo can perform just as good or even better than some of those sports cars you just listed. Come on the evo is a sports car... disgused with four doors :)

Show me where a Lancer outperforms a Corvette.

The Lancer is not a sports car.

Get over it.

heh

I didn't say the Evo outperforms a Corvette but that the Evo's performance is up there with the359's "real sports car list". So it's a sports car to me.

If you want to see how the Evo does against the corvette just go to rollazn's Best Motoring stickyed thread in the video&photos forum and look for super car battle. This car does live up to the hype it gets.

back on topic:
a v10 ey? it's probably a de-tuned toyota eff-wan engine  in race form the toyota F1 "RVX-04" 3.0liter v10 produces around 900 hp.

Please inform me why it's not a sport car, you have yet to elucidate. You just comment with no explanation at all. I ask you once before and ill ask again, can you explain why you don't think the Lancer Evolution (not the regular lancer) is not a sport car, aside from the fact that it has 4 doors.

Well can a 350Z outperform a Corvette? No. So I guess a 350Z isn't a sport car is it? How about the 3000GT? It can't outperform the Corvette is it a sport car? No.

Most people would consider the 350Z as a sport car. Yet a Mitsubishi Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STi can outperform a 350Z. What does that mean?

You said the Lancer (I am assuming you are talking about the Evolution) isn’t a sport car, so is the STi a sport car? Maybe you like to use the term sport sedan?

Now you try to get over it.

Also I don’t think you read I6-4-eva comment correctly, reread it. He never said that the Evolution can outperform the Corvette specifically. So actually you assumed that he meant the Corvette and therefore it’s wrong on your fault.

The Evolution cannot outperform a Corvette.

Out of 5 sport cars, the Evolution can hang with 4, excluding the Corvette which overpowers them all. Which isn’t really fair.
