We're not sure if Volvo officially unveiled its new V70, but AutoWeek.nl and Auto Motor und Sport are showing the new wagon on their websites, and with a little translation help from Motor Authority we can bring you the details. Looking for all the world like, well... an S80 station wagon, the new V70 sports a new skin keeping in step with the brand's design language that only makes a passing gesture to the slab sided boxes of yesteryear. The rear of the V70 sports Volvo's trademark vertical taillamps that extend upward from a wide base, and the rear glass shape hints ever so slightly at the unique shape of the C30's hatch, itself an homage to the original P1800. Interior space have apparently grown in every which way thanks to a body that's larger in every metric.

Power for the V70 will come from at least four engines: a 2.4L diesel four-cylinder producing 143 hp and 250 ft-lbs. of torque, a five-cylinder diesel producing 185 hp and 295 ft-lbs. of torque, a 2.5L turbo gas engine making 285 hp and 221 ft-lbs. of torque and a range-topping 3.2L inline-6 that generates 285 hp and 295 ft-lbs. of torque. A high-performance V8 model is also expected to be announced in the near future. Safety equipment meets or exceeds the standard set by Volvo with Dynamic Traction and Stability Control, active damping control, optional AWD and what we're sure will be an impressive number of airbags.

It's hard for anyone to argue that the wagon is dead when automakers like Volvo put the time and money into making one this good looking and capable. Of course, these details apply to the European model, which will officially be introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We'll be on hand to welcome the new V70 into the world and bring you more details and live shots from the show floor.

I like it, the 3.2 I-6 looks good, too.

Kudos to Volvo for doing it right once again. The only brand with consistently attractive cars.
Everytime you, and most commonly other Americans, say that I waste another half hour of my life wondering 'WTF'!?

I don't think the rear goes too well with the front, but otherwise it is fantastic. Especially the rear. Harks back to older cars without being too retro.

Front looks fine...... back is OMG! someone tried to bring back the 760 GLE!! AAAAHHHH run!! Putting the lettering like that reminds me of boy racers in the UK doing that on their vauxhall corsas... sorry it looks tacky done like that!

Imo Volvo's are generally nice but not special looking cars, the rear of this one isn't so nice looking but theres not much wrong with the way an S40 or S60 looks.

Ah. Another great looking Volvo. 👍 (IN america, Volvo = Stylish Conservativism)

I'd love to have one of those. :)

I think that's how I would describe them actually, conservatively tasteful. Except for the back of this one, I don't like the back of this that much, I like the front quiet a lot though.

Styling::confused: What happened here? The car looks hideous! The lights look Volvo. They look like the C30. Very bad. I hate that rear. It is also more bland than the C30. I disapprove:tdown::yuck:. Volvo has a bit of time left, I hope it is put to good use. As for the front, it looks a little like an Audi without the grille. It looks a bit too trucklike as well.

The interior looks pretty cool. We currently have an XC70, and that interior is much nicer looking than what we have.

On the engine:👍

Our car has what I think would be the equivalent of the 2.5. Turbo lag seems to be a bit of an issue, but it is plenty powerful for regular street use. The cars are a bit boat-like in handling, so that doesn't seem to match well.

This is great - only a few negative comments so far. In literally EVERY instance in these 'first pictures' thread, they're littered with negative comments. That means Volvo has struck gold once again. I agree with the statement that the lettering on the back is hokie - I hope they change it for production, but they probably won't. The only weak point in an otherwise finely-styled vehicle.

 Just about everyone can agree that Volvo styles cars well. I personally have my own tastes for other brands, but those are tastes that would be hard to reach a consensus. Volvo's styling jobs are typically well-regarded by all.

Which engine is yours? If it's the 2.4T hold your breath - I drove an S80 with the 2.5-liter turbo and power delivery was a lot more linear and came much earlier than with the 2.4T. Probably the reason the 2.5 replaced the 2.4. Point taken though - and power is similar.

EDIT: worth mentioning - the model shown is a T5 AWD, which doesn't presently exist. Sounds good though - 285 horses plus all-wheel drive brings back memories of the 98-00 V70R, although it only had 247 horsepower.

The pictured car being in a particularly ugly colour left aside. (GO WITH DARK BLUE FOR PUBLISHING SHOTS ***HOLES!!!) I think the back looks really bad. The front looks better, not good though. They should've gone back towards the 1998 designs, and not push the new design to even bulkier frontiers. The mirrors look detached which is ugly. And yeah the lettering is awful... :(

However I do like the front lip, and the drastic curve on the side (reminds me of the 240 yet not in a bad way).

Overall I have to disagree with Doug here and say Volvo struck crap, not gold.

This is coming from an avid Volvo fan - and a regular V70 driver. I still think this

is one of the most beautifully designed wagons ever in the history of ever. Ever.

Enough of this styling arguements...did you people not read this part?

I <3 Volvo

This isn't ugly what-so-ever. Great looking car inside and out. Yes the backend could probably be better--but it isn't bad by any means. Oh, and incase you are blind...

My approval rating: 99/100

This is the same model car we have:

I did not find it particularly striking at first but now, compared to this, I find it looks quite nice. Of course, I have never really been a fan of Volvos. I just like our car because it has a bit of luxury and a high-boost turbo:D.

I believe our engine is the 2.5 liter. I guess I just might not be good at picking out turbo lag. All I know is that it really starts pulling around 4000 RPM.

I think it's a job well done. It's a bit over-the-top for Volvo, but no more so than the current A4 is for Audi. It keeps some very Volvo-esque hard lines, while exploring new details (mostly in the lights, both front & back). They even managed to keep the rear door wide enough without looking fat, as opposed to the Forester's ever-narrowing rear hatch.

I especially like the 5-rotor-fan wheels, much like the 90's turbo Volvo's. 👍

Nice-looking car, but after designing the stunning back end of the C30 and the absolutely gorgeous back of the V50, how can they muck up the back end of this one?

...I'd reserve judgment until the V8 model debuts, as that would likely be the sweet-spot for me. On the issue of styling, I love it. Very refined and restrained, and yet very sensual in a womanly way. The curves are great, and I love the back end of the car. Too bad Volvo hasn't been doing too great lately, beyond that, not handing me the keys to a new (free) C30 (damn you Volvo!).

YSS the I6 with 285bhp and 295ft.lbs of torque DOESN'T interest you? What, is that not enough power?!

Dude, give me that I6 in a regular Ford saloon car please...can you say Fusion SVT!

That will work, but you can't argue against eight cylinders. Thats just what we do here in America. Either way, great car. I'd buy one even in the most basic form, as they look that damn good...

I thought BMW and Nissan were evidence enough that I6's are teh own. What more do you want? The V8 probably won't output THAT much more power. That and good luck on the dream that Volvo will even PUT a V8 in a saloon or estate car. Psh...yea there's as much chance as that happening as BMW to send the M3 CSL over here.

Hmmm, I stand corrected. Gotta find the numbers on that thing. Looks good.

Opels / Vauxhalls have gone down the drain since they adopted this melting bodywork effect and cute styling.... I want it agressive and angular like before!

Well regarded. I certainly wouldn't call them bad looking, I'll admit that, but the enthusiasm some people show for their aesthetics? And some of these people probably bad mouth American manfacturers for their retro styling... Volvo doesn't do retro styling because they're style never changed. It's always been, pretty angular.

And yeah the lettering is awful... :(
Reminds me of later Rover models ;)

However I do like the front lip, and the drastic curve on the side (reminds me of the 240 yet not in a bad way).
Drastic curve on the side?!? You mean the rear corners?

Enough of this styling arguements...did you people not read this part?
Volvo's have always been known in the UK as the understated sleepers due to their use by the police.

This isn't ugly what-so-ever. Great looking car inside and out. Yes the backend could probably be better--but it isn't bad by any means. Oh, and incase you are blind...
Ahhh that word again!

I think they did everything perfect except the back. I always liked the styling of Volvo's except the back ends of the wagons. The V6 and V8's sound pretty good.
