New wheel driver, thoughts of GT5 have changed.

Well, I finally got my set up all taken care of. I've had a G25 for a while, used it to play Live for Speed on the PC, but never used it for a console game. Just got a Wheel Stand Pro in and mounted my G25 to it, hooked it all up and started racing. Well, sorta. I've been playing Gran Turismo with the controller since day one, and I mean Gran Turismo 1. It's fun, don't get me wrong, very fun. But WOW what a difference a wheel makes! I feel like a noob all over again, it's awesome! I played GT5 for the first week with the controller, leveled to about 18, some golds some silvers on licenses and special events. Then went and started digging deeper for all golds. The wheel makes this process both easy and very difficult at the same time. NASCAR special events with the wheel feel pretty easy so far, but one I have come across that is proving not so is the intermediate Top Gear race, the one with the Lotus Elise. That sucker is a handful for me with the wheel, it is sooooo much fun!! I was a little worried the game might get repetitive for me there while just using the controller, but now, it's like starting a whole new experience. I love this game, glad I made the investment, thanks!
 
I am exactly in the same situation like you just hit lvl 18 with controller. Today I took the decision and ordered a DFGT wheel. I think I will fall in love all over again ( not that I lost any from the 23rd :P).

Was going to get the new thrustmaster until I heard the price :P.
 
Got a Driving force wireless wheel on Tuesday...I'm really having problems putting in some decent laps with a wheel as I've hit level 20 with my controller. I'm new to wheel racing as a whole...

Every once in a while everything comes together and I put in an awesome lap, but 99 out of a 100 laps is a complete monstrocity. I'm finding wheel racing extremely difficult at the moment.
 
Funny, I just hit level 18 and I'm out of town for a day, at the same time I got confirmation my wheel is scheduled to show up tomorrow...
 
It seems that level 18 is the breaking point. I'm at 6 with my controller, but will probably get a wheel when I'm at 18 :D
 
Couldn't agree more. I'm at lvl 20 and just bought a dfgt yesterday. Couldn't match my controller times in top gear test track or get anywhere near them. Probably spent 5-6 hrs just on top gear track yesterday but by the end of it was pretty much back up to the controller times. wheel setup not great at the moment as I just have it on a board on my lap, but going to build a stand for it over the weekend.
 
I've used a controller to play GT since day one too, but I've had a DFP for a few years, which I brought to use with GT4, but could never get used to using.

For a change I decided to only use a wheel to play GT5, and I haven't looked back since! I've not tried to use a controller, and I don't intend to, because GT5 feels so natural using a wheel.
 
I got my G25 halfway though GT4. My lap times dropped for a while but after a few weeks I was faster than I ever was with a controller. The few times I've used a controller since have been pretty embarrassing.
 
I used controller for all of the other GT's
i only used my G25 a little bit with GT5P, mainly coz i sucked so gave up.

but i forced myself to ONLY use it with GT5.

its so rewarding and fun i don't ever want to go back

I did all previous GT's with the dualshock .... it understands me better then ... (fill in yourself)

Now with GT5 i started off with the DFGT ... i have to learn it all over again ... and its so much FUN! where i used to have steering difficulties I now find myself learning how to use the throttle and brakes like they've just been added :sly: ... now at level 15 I get the hang of it ... ITS SO MUCH FUN!

just can't wait to get home and play some more ...

I've just bought a DFGT after using a controller since GT1 all they way through GT5P.
Feels amazing and i feel i have alot more control over the car and that im faster, but i am actually alot slower with the wheel so far, hopefully that will change in the next few hours of gameplay :)
 
I played with a controller up until GT5, i bought a G27 when i knew that GT5 would be out in a few months, then got into PC sims with it while i was bored. I was surprised as i expected to be instantly awesome, though i wasnt, i was faster on the PC games than i was with a gamepad atleast, but i soon got up to speed.

The difference in a wheel and a controller when you get used to it is huge you can be so much smoother.
 
So is it really worth getting a wheel, im not sure as the ones i used 10 years ago were dog ****e and im not sure, what do you guys think i want to know the good and bad.
 
Great to hear lots of new people getting wheels.

Don't get disheartened if you're slower to start with... it probably takes a month or 2 to really get really proficient. After that you'll never look back... it's like playing a whole new game :)

Only thing I don't like about the DFGT is the tiny paddle shifters. Doubt I'd use the H shifter on the G27 all that much, but the paddle shifters look much better.
 
Playing GT5 with or without a controller...it's like two different games. Bought my first ever wheel last week (DFGT) and I'm never going back to a controller.

It's the tyres - comfort hard. But the brakes also. Map the in-setup adjustments to the buttons on the wheel, and take of a chunk of rear brake power off once you start the challenge. Makes a world of difference. I ended up putting a few assists on for that challenge as well - pained me to do it though :)

In fact, the default brake balance for all cars makes turning the ABS off suicidal. Taking one of the front and two or three off the back brakes and turning off ABS completely adds a whole new dimension to GT5 for me.

The real advantage of a G25/27 is not so much the paddles as the pedals.

The steering on th DFGT is actually very good... as good IMO as the much more expensive G25. But the G25/27 has far superior pedals to the DFGT... much more resistance and so much easier to get accurate brake and gas inputs.

Thanks. I've been searching around for a G27 and they seem to be sold out everywhere atm. If the pedals are that much better, I'll hold out till I find a G27 somewhere.
 
Using a wheel allows the driver to be smoother, since you have analog inputs with a larger range.

However.....

The ability to recover from screw-ups, hold drifts, brake efficiently and maintain balance become much harder. Don't forget about the Manual H-Shifter. That adds additional complexity. This is what real driving is like and it is what makes it difficult, but so very reward.


I use a G25, Playseat and H-Shifter on GT5. I drive with ABS OFF usually, although many of the challenges i need to put it on '1', because its decreases my time considerably.

Im not a big fan of wheels, even though for some reason I own 3 of them, I find the controller much easier, and more convenient to just pull out and get some quick races in. Ive come to the conclusion that its just easier to move a little analog stick around, it doesnt have to move much, unlike a wheel. Its very simple to react quickly and just move that little thing around, where with a wheel its more difficult since you need to turn it left and right, it needs to move a greater distance for the car to react, so naturally its more work, your reaction time is going to be a little lower. Not much slower, but it definitely is.

An analog stick only has a distance of like maybe 1 inch to move to get the car to move extreme left and right, this is not the case with wheels, and thats the main reason I dont use them.

The only advantage ive found with using wheels over the years is holding a smooth line around large curves. Thats not enough for me to start using them again.
 
I've been a controller player - but had the opportunity to get a wheel for xmas - so ordered a DFGT. Can't wait. Level 21 so far...

Hey u say about the pedals not much resistance I used to think that with my pedals DFGT untill i opened up the pedals and got some rubber patches from work and stuck it inside the pedals to give a nice bit of resistance it does work but takes some time to get right.
Ive still got my rubber under the brake pedal but not the gas one :)
 
A wheel definitely makes all the difference. I could never play a racing game sim or otherwise without one now.
FYI, there is a great bunch of people over at www.wheelracers.com
They race multiple nights each week. They're all mature, clean racers and have a great core group of people. There is an excellent forum set up and from time to time some of the series get prizes sponsored by Sony or Microsoft (they don't just race GT5. Also race in Forza and F1 as well)

How are the DFGT pedals compare to the old DFP? Those need to be cleaned like bi-weekly and or else they start playing tricks on you...

G25 so far have been pretty trouble free for me. I bought GT4, DFP and PS2 back in 2006 and have never looked back on driving any racing game(PC, PS2 or otherwise) with wheel, as long as the game is decent with it(NFS:U doesn't do any FFB so no point with wheel, for example). Its one reason why I always though there is some legitimacy in claiming some kind of "sim" potential to GT4 and now GT5, since the wheel actually feeds right. Got G25 last year and been playing GTR2, rFactor, RBR and now GT5 with it.
 
I went from a DS3 to G25 in GT5P after golding the game with the DS3.

I had to start the game from square one to learn how to use the wheel properly. I was a mess.

You have to work ALOT harder with the wheel, I think thats the main issue. Full lock from left to right was a quick flick of the stick on the DS3 whereas the wheel requires a lot more work, 900 degrees of work.
