I am getting my first ever wheel for Christmas , a DFGT and at the moment I am lvl 26 A + B spec but know its going to be completly different to drive with a wheel so the question being should I start my game again so I learn to drive with a wheel with slower cars and by the time I get faster cars I hopefully would have got used to the wheel ????

I didn't get a wheel till I reached level 20, and I went back and did every race over again just to experience it with the wheel.

And it is definitely a good idea to start out with slower cars till you get used to it.

same here,

buying a wheel after the holidays also a dfgt.
however i'm not gonna restart the game.
i will redo al the races with a suiting car to get the wheel feeling, so no formula gt in clubman cup or stuff like that.

cheers

Hi buddy,

TBH, you don't need to grind 26 levels which you already done to get used to the wheel. Unless you really feel like getting back to the start, some practice with FF cars, then slower FR cars and you'll be set.

BTW congrats... you'll be playing a brand new GT soon.

No point in starting a game from scratch - just repeat the easier races with an easy-to-drive car and/or make use of practice/arcade modes to get used to the wheel.

Is the game easier with a wheel?

For example, I've seen on youtube some people get really good times on some license tests and I'm assuming they're using wheels because I've only just been able to get gold on some license tests whilst using a normal controller.

I've repeated some of the tests like a hundred times and haven't been able to get gold although some people beat the gold marker by .05-.1

I'm level 10 started with just the controller - but I used to have a madcatz steering wheel for the PS2 and the original TOCA touring cars.

So...I got the DFGT yesterday and spent 4 hours on it. I bought an 03 Focus ST and I literally spent 4 hours going around the Top Gear Test Track trying to get faster and faster.

The wheel is superb. Although when you get it, reduce the Force Feeback down to 2 in the main menu (default is 5) as it's A LOT OF FORCE to get used to right away when you have been using the controller - as I found out when I wrote off my RX8 concept on the first corner (lol)

Hope that helps... if you wanna know more of an indepth detail about the wheel just PM me :) or I can explain here if others wish. Plenty of reviews out there though!

I'm definitely waaay faster and more accurate with the wheel. Whether it's easier or not, it depends on the user I guess. I personally will never go back to using a controller with driving games...especially GT5. It's so much more immersive with the wheel.

This game was designed with a wheel in mind.

I'd put money up that a wheel with ALWAYS produce a faster lap time than a ****** little controller. The ability to steer smoother and manipulate the throttle and brake on a wheel setup make it inherently better for this game.

I'm hoping to get a wheel very soon .

I have the DFGT wheel and love it, would never go back to a controller. I do see better times than with a controller but still can't get gold on all the licenses, some I am way off and its not worth spending 1-2 hours to get better than a bronze, at least not to me, I don't have that much free time. I can gold all the regular races but not special events. I will say that without the wheel I probably couldn't even medal some of the special events but will at least get bronze with the wheel.

Make sure you have money for some kind of "cockpit". You can not use a wheel on your lap.

Yeah you can make one out of MDF wich will cost you around 50-60$ according you have some tools and knowledge.
My 1st cockpit cost me 35$, made from ½" MDF, I allredy had a car seat, wich I still you with my new cockpit

when i 1st got my wheel it felt strange but stick with it you will warm to it and from there using a pad will feel plain old wrong.

it takes a little while to re-learn how to drive with the wheel, but once you do it is much faster and accurate. I would definitely recommend starting with some slower cars and build up to the fast ones.

and like the other guys said, get a rig to mount it to. I use this one...

I don't think he is shipping any right now because he is back ordered like hell. I know the guy who builds and sells them and he's been working like 16 hour days trying to keep up since GT5 came out. It makes a huge difference though being able to adjust the wheel to a comfortable position for you.

I use a DFGT, and especially through the Force Feedback you get a lot more feel of what the car is doing, when it's about to oversteer etc. Depends on the car though, the slower cars do not give you so much feedback as the racers. Also you can steer, brake and give throttle with a lot more precision. It's still not the same as racing a real car, but the feedback you get from a wheel really helps in driving a lot better. Driving with the controller isn't too bad either, but for real quick times and getting sucked into the game I prefer a wheel.

Your racing lines will be smoother and more consistent with the wheel, which will eventually turn into faster lap times. Be sure not to attack corners with the same gusto as you did with a DS3, or things could get real messy real fast. When you get better with the wheel, then you can go nuts.

Smooth = Consistent = Fast

When working my way up the learning curve with a wheel, it helped to start with the more forgiving FFs and 4WDs, before working my way to the FR and MR cars. I saved RR for last, because damn.

Good luck!
