Newcomer: why can't I get into Career mode etc

So I've finally gotten around to trying my GT6 Anniversary Edition. I can start the game up no problem, but in the main menu I can only access the left column (e.g. Garage) but if I move to right and try to click on anything else it just gives a dud thud sound indicating I'm locked out ?

So I can't get into any real GT6 racing events, Arcade mode etc. In fact the only way I can get on to a track so far is via Garage > Free Run ...

Buit bizarre so obviously I'm missing something basic here and so any pointers much appreciated!

It's been a while since I first played GT6, but this video gives a nice walkthrough of the beginnings of the game:

 
OK thanks for the clues. Having watched first few minutes of that video I'll try choosing Honda Fit and see how that goes. I used to play GT3 years ago and in that game Arcade mode didn't require you to buy cars first. Has that all changed in GT6 ... ?

In GT6 you need to complete the short tutorial before the game unlocks. Buying the Honda Fit is part of the tutorial and can't be skipped. You can sell it though once you've bought it, and get another car instead.
 
Ahh OK thanks, I'll go do that tutorial, although I'm not expecting it to be real interesting !
