http://www.slashgear.com/apple-dumps-scroll-wheel-replaces-with-scroll-strips-272217.php

Basically, the whole front panel is a screen, and it's bezel is touch sensitive for virtual buttons and other functions displayed at the edge of the screen.

I have to admit this is a great idea for maximizing screen real estate and now the Zune is one step behind by copying the look of the old interface.

EDIT: Bugger, I should have put this in electronics....

You can move it yerself with the Admin tools in the lower right corner ;-)

Looks like you'll have to wear gloves!

The interface looks pretty brilliant and easy to use. However, it'd be somewhat difficult to use a case that doesn't obstruct the interface, so here's one to hoping that it's more scratch resistant...

Meh,Ipods suck.

Even with Rockbox.

DRM-no thanks.

And lets not forget the battery you can't replace, and the touch wheel is crap, then theres the fact that you cant copy stuff YOU made(as in,you created) back to the computer......

This interface might look cool, but as with all touchscrreen interfaces,It will probably fail sooner than yout usual touchwheel does.

Zero points for Ipod.

I am not a fan of the iPod either...but I though the interface was innovative. The point, you see, is that avoids all the issues with a touchscreen, since it's not a touchscreen.

ROCKbox fixes all those problems you listed. You can also replace the battery and the touchwheel is pretty durable, so stop acting like a wannabe elitist.

It's been my experience that most people who turn up their noses on the current-gen iPods want to be elitist. Sure, anything before the 5G is pure crap, but Apple have turned a new leaf on their latest gen.

Keep in mind that Apple files a lot of patents that it has never followed through with, so don’t be disappointed if this never sees the light of day. Conversely, don’t be surprised if it does. ;)

True that. Remember that they also recently filed a patent for iPods that can purchase music wirelessly over the internet. That's not to say the next iPods will definitely have this feature, but they at least might.

Is the new iPod Shuffle going to be a suppository?

the only think wrong with these "touch" controls is that if you put the iPod into your pocket, you always have to turn the hold on for the settings to be messed around with.

other than this, iPODS ALL THE WAY!!! 👍 :D

I like, I like. Is it possible that Apple could release this before Christmas? :sly:

Theres not much of a point releasing it after christmas because by then, everybody will be poor and owe credit card companies a lot of money :dunce:

And seeing how the 5g ipod was released last year in nov, i expect something to happen this nov :dopey:

It (like the current click wheel) would only be activated if you used your finger or part of your body to touch it... it works on the tiny amaount of electricity produced by the body, having a relatively thick piece of material between your skin and the touch pad (like a trouser pocket) it shouldnt do anything... the real problem here now becomes holding it... where else are you going to hold it but its edges!

As for the patent sketches I can already see what its gonna kind of look like in my mind..... just a white picture frame with a crome back..... COOL!

Yes. The advantage of the touchscreen is that the interface could be totally customizeable, which sounds pretty nice. Personally, though, I don't think apple will go with it - I doubt that they'll want to be dis-associated with the click wheel design.

They could just do this:

iPods are prone to smudging already... Maybe they'll come up with some magic material :p

I don't mind the scratching and smudging on my iPod. I use it as a music player, so the look of it doesn't matter. But if I were to get an iPod mainly for video, I probably would wear gloves like GTRacer suggested.

Nice, its touch sensitive - I wonder if they would go back to those heat-sensitive buttons that were on the 3rd Gen iPods, like the one I have. Those are awesome IMO.

That's an awesome idea. Let's take it one step further. What if it can detect body heat and you can control it while your thumb is in the air? Simply trace the pattern and the system follows. That way, no smudges.
