I'm guessing Datsun 2.0 will be a "youth" brand like Scion is for Toyota.

Why p*ss on the Datson name then? i could understand if it was going to be something like a scion okay, but third world countries? thats silly marketing.

Only if it doesn't pay back. ;)

I think it could pay off. Drive g in India is still a new concept. Most of the roads are dirt and people still ride donkeys in the street. I think as Indias road improve more people will need cars, and affordable ones like Datsun. There are 1 billion people in India of Datsun is the affordable car lots of people will buy them.

What's so special about the Datsun name? Datsun used to sell cheap and affordable cars to price-conscious consumers. Reviving it to sell cheap and affordable cars to price-conscious consumers so the Nissan name can move upmarket isn't a bad idea.

That's why its so special.

Where would that leave Infiniti?

You know in Greece the name Datsun is linked with gypsies because for some reason a Datsun pickup truck its their flagship car. Outside of gypsies no one ever buys a Datsun, instead they buy a Nissan Sunny or a Kia e.t.c.

Same place as Lexus.

Scion -> Toyota -> Lexus

Datsun -> Nissan -> Infiniti

👍
Your hierarchy is flawed. I highly doubt Datsun will be anything like Scions. A low end Scion is more expensive than a low end Toyota. Scion was created to appeal to generation Y and to modify to the highest extent.
I think a better analogy with a major automotive maker would be Smart to Mercedes-Benz. MB wouldn't want to taint their luxury reputation by extending their name out to something "cheap" like the Fortwo. (I know they only bought the controlling share).

As said above, I don't think they want to "cheapen" their Altimas, etc. I would love to consider a Datsun, like a revived Pulsar. If could reach out to consumers with a car less than $10,000 and 40mpg, I think it would be welcomed with open arms. I wonder if they'll re-brand some cars down the road.

Err..no. I still stand by what I said. It's basically the same thing.

To be clear, the only thing I disagree with is:
Scion:Toyota :: Datsun:Nissan.
So, how is that statement true? Given what we know/knew about Datsun, can you provide tangible examples, or is that just your personal, unsupported opinion?

Scion and Datsun would have both been created to make cheaper cars.

I'd suggest doing some research. It took me all of 10 seconds to confirm: About Scion
Direct quote:
We knew that drivers wanted more than just an affordable car, they wanted something to express their individuality and fit their lifestyle. So, we decided to build great quality cars with unique body styles and let our owners personalize their own with a variety of different accessories.

If you still want to believe your statement, that's fine. 👍 Hopefully the remainder of our community won't be misinformed.

I don't really care if they bring back Datsun or not, I just want Nissan to build a new Silvia/240SX, whatever the badge on the front.

Not quite true. Scion is a brand targeted at young people, and even though a car aimed at young consumers must be relatively cheap to have any sort of market impact, it isn't the primary goal. Case in point, Scions aren't as cheap as low end Toyotas. Here in Canada, the Yaris and Corolla are much less expensive than any Scion.

Seems to me like one of their goals was to build an affordable car. Hence, I'm still right.

Thank you for the useless reply, as I imagine you still haven't looked up background of the car brand. That statement is called a concession point. What else does the rest of it say? (Rhetorical) :rolleyes: So, you'll stick with your misinformation. Thank you for letting me try.

Back to Datsun, they look quite nice to me.

I know why they were created, I've worked for them. :rolleyes:

I don't see why it's so hard to see the connection. YES, they were created for a younger audience but also to be CHEAPER. Nissan is reviving the Datsun brand to have an outlet for CHEAPER cars.

They both share that connection. Which was my original point. Hence my first post about the subject is still right. :dunce:

Because the connection isn't there. Scion isn't an entry level brand. It never was, and it doesn't look like it ever will be if the BreezeFreeze is any indication. They are cars targeted towards a specific demographic (that it no longer really reels in that demographic isn't the point). They aren't cheap for what they are, and Toyota themselves sell several models that undercut them. There is no clear hierarchy like you posited in your first post.

Datsun on the other hand is going to be an entry level brand, like what Geo was for GM back in the 90s; so there will be a clear hierarchy.

Regardless of where Scion is, Datsun being an entry level brand could maybe let Nissan move up to where Buick is now, and Infiniti up to truly compete head on with Lexus.
