Nissan has entered a new phase of testing for its Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology, in which cars can 'communicate' with elements of the local infrastructure such as traffic lights.
A pilot trial in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Tokyo, where Nissan's technical centre is sited, will see the collection of data from several hundred participating cars driven by Nissan employees.
The technology is claimed to have the potential to reduce accidents with pedestrians, as well as to ease traffic congestion and thus improve fuel consumption.
The specially-equipped traffic lights will synchronise according to traffic volume and conditions, send alerts to drivers who appear to be about to jump a red light, warn them of traffic signals ahead and optimise their timing to stop a build-up of traffic at junctions and in filter lanes.
However, they will give pedestrians the right of way, with particular focus on a specially created virtual school zone around the Nissan employees' nursery. Nissan will go on to analyse the data to see how pedestrians can be best-protected.
