As a very late signed driver for GTN I'm just getting up to speed with this latest board comp, and the fact that the drivers aren't submitted prior to each round.

So I guess this is why there isn't threads for each round leading up to the race where all the fun can take place.

Just seems a bit like a ghost town at the hosting board save for the results threads. Really different this time around, as all the racing is done in secret, with no action until the results are posted.

Is it just me, or do others miss all the hoopla that led to each result thread in previous BC's?

There's nothing preventing people from doing all the bench racing they want, whether the drivers are pre-announced or not. I opted to not require pre-race driver signups because a number of boards were having difficulty making 10+2 drivers, and I wanted them to have enough flexibility to avoid DNFs whenever possible.

The last BC to have assigned drivers was BC3 (GTWeb hosted), and there wasn't much discussion there until after the races either.

EDIT/ Actually Coyote did a poll for each race... "Who do think will win?"
Other than that, not much happened.

Why do people keep their races secret anyway?

Girls? You saw girls there? Wow! I haven't seen any yet. Next time I want proof ...

I should have used a proper flag pole rather than hoisting the TorcTalk flag on my ole fella!

Now which of you mongrels stole my clothes.

Can't agree with you there mate. The GT series has been around soo long, and many of us have been doing the OLR rounds since GT1/2. Things are bound to become stale at times, but i don't think that the 'new' generation is such a bad thing and i think the quality/speed of driver these days is actually much higher on average than at any other time in the GT lifespan. I too miss seeing some past GT greats in action, but i also enjoy watching new faces pop up and run with ole legends (and do well!). Looking back you can always remember some classic series and threads, but there is always another legend/classic on the horizin. The professionalism that our 'hobby' has attained is high, and the organisation that goes into most series these days is simply awesome. I'd recommend to anyone who looks back to the ole days through rose coloured glasses to also remember some of the bad times in seasons past. Not all was plain sailing and not everything may be as you remember it.

big thumbs up to the current crop of GT racers and race admins (as well as those whom have been running GT and particiapting in the various forums for years).

With this game you get out what you put in.

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth...

That will teach ya for putting things in there that don't belong to you NQ ......

uhm mate...I'm not too sure about that...this is not the highest level reachable with gt4...it's easily showed by first BC results...those times aren't the best doable for the combos, and one of winner's time is about 1 second slower than an ideal best time for that race...
I think it's just as it was with gt3...on the last year of his life, the fastest guys reached the top...GT4 has still to be mastered ;)

I agree with that, especially on races that requires a special setup. Many of us still have to learn how GT4 works with setup, how the car react. However, we all those years of racing with better people, we got faster and faster and faster so we can manage to reach a certain limit more quickly than we were to used to for example at the first Board Challenge. We are more skilled, it's easier for us to reach the limit. It's then easier to understand the car, how it will reacts if I do this or that, etc. That makes our times even better. We often see practical time closer to the time we can reach in theory (take your best section for each). That was hard to be, let's say, at 0.7 of that theorically perfect time, but now I can see times from 0.2 to 0.4 away from this perfect lap.

... :ouch:

Ya it's not false, but in same time i don't think guys who drive since a few GT are slower cause it's GT4 and it's new.

The sensation are new on GT4 but are not so different, specially with the DFP, i feel they are more realistic and not more hard. Maybe some new track will give us hard time.

But it's surly fun to see those new driver's busting some crazy lap.

I like the difference of driving without knowing where you are in the race, it makes people work harder to do there best. That kind of mystery makes me push alot harder to find the good setting and scratch as much as i can from my chrono.

a plus

I was talking about the average standard of driver in todays GT community, not soo much how well we have mastered GT4 to date. I know times will tumble as GT4 gets older, but the 'standard' of driver at this point in time is what i'm getting at.

Looking back to the GT1/2 days you had a small group of super quick guys and a few mid packers, and alot of slowies. Towards the mid and end of GT2 you had a few more Aliens (and some of the best GT has ever seen) and the mid pack was getting crowded. GT3 saw an explosion of quick guys and alot more mid pack runners. The skill level on average was high and the organisation of series was relatively good during the mid days of GT3. But today we are using GT4 and while its still new and the times are off what they will eventually be, i stand by my claims that the average standard of driver is higher today than at any other time in the GT lifespan. Old hands have had years to practice, and new blood is full of quick racers who show speed beyond thier experience. Remember when a newbie was slow ........ not these days!!!!! You are just as likely to get your but kicked by a guy you have never heard of these days.

Just my opinon though ;)

I think you're spot on Ryp regarding the massive amount of very fast drivers today compared to a relatively small group of known fast guys way back when.

But as you look at this current BC, it stands to reason when you see 14 boards participating. Man, I didn't even know some of these places existed.

Over time, the hobby has continued to grow, new venues to hang your hat, etc. And while it does get stale to many of the old guard on a regular basis, it appears that the young blood is multiplying faster than ever.

When this version of GT came out, I was deep in the license tests and missions with an occasional spotty here and there. Was tons of fun. Then I put it down for maybe 5 months or so and didn't miss it a bit.

And here we are at the latest board challenge, and I was fortunate that my oldest teammates at GTN had a seat for me last minute. This kind of event really stokes the fire that will never completely burn out. I'm having a blast right now with the driving, the competition (as the results are posted and teams are shuffled), and the comraderie. Good stuff.

You covered basically everything that popped into my head, hypersport. I never would've thought we'd have 14 boards at a board challenge, and it only stands to get bigger with Number 6. And the new youngins' are a huge, very talented group. Just take a look at the GTP's own WRS series. There's names that I don't recognize at all... running right up there with names I always associated with light-speed. While things sometimes feel stale, this infusion of new racers also cheers me up; I know that our little niche of the web will continue on for a while, and while there's always talk of a "proper OLR" (and it does indeed sound nice), if this isn't broke, why fix it? I love the feeling of our little version of OLR, even more specifically the Board Challenges. Nothing makes you run harder.

This is my third Board Challenge (missed the first one due to some offline times, had lost all interest in GT3 for the fourth), and it's been the most enjoyable yet. It's interesting to see where old teammates are (oh, forum problems), and somehow getting the feeling one of them had a big influence on one of the chosen races (a Rotary at Midfield... who could that be? ;)). It's been a hugely entertaining series so far, no amount of thanks being enough for Duke's efforts, and despite it being a "best of the best" series, really, I'm just glad to be a part at all :)

back to the initial talk....

should we make a poll about who is going to win and with what time?

:dopey:

also, about the discussion of guys you don´t know beating legends of OLR. i really think its a shame i didn´t have internet acess by the time GT2 was playing in the BC´s...

i would defenately be in, and if anyone here remember of Francisco is back from racing-line, knows that i would do well, i was ranked #1 there by 2003...
:)
too bad some fast guys didn´t even know that competitions like that are hold... now i´m a bit old, but back in my hey days i would love to participate in a BC 👍
