Cheaper too
• Not enough demand, says Ford boss
• Hot Fiesta could be a Mini rival
• American market could swing decision

Doubts are growing that Ford will build a Mini-bashing hot ST version of its new Fiesta.

'It's something we are constantly looking at, but it's not in the programme at this stage,' said Roelant de Waard, chairman of Ford of Britain.

'The UK is the only market interested in hot hatches. There we sell 3000 of the current Fiesta ST a year, and that is three times the figure in the next-best market.

'With the way things are going with economy and emissions, we will probably sell more Econetic (high-economy, low-CO2) models in future.'

However, there is a glimmer of hope that a new ST will be built – thanks to America.

The new Fiesta will be the first to cross the Atlantic since the original from the mid-1970s, so it goes there without any image baggage.

If the American market is judged to be interested in an ST model, it could mean Ford will sell enough cars to make it worthwhile developing a hot hatch.

However, initially the Fiesta will be sold in America as a saloon only, probably with a 2.0-litre engine and an auto gearbox.

However, if Ford USA decides to take the three-door hatch as well, it would have a car to rival the mega-successful Mini if there was a more powerful engine.

A 1.6-litre unit with around 175bhp would give the Cooper S a real fright. Ford could even call it Verve, like the concept car that preceded the new Fiesta.

Ford has confirmed that the new Fiesta will spawn a taller Fusion replacement, and says it will be a more exciting-looking car than the often derided, but commercially successful, current model.

Surely for will make a fiesta ST at some stage. It just wouldnt seem right, especially as their ST brand seemed so succesful!

As lovely as the Fiesta ST was, I didn't really set the world on fire in terms of sales, so for the time being it's a smart move from Ford.

Well their going to do a new KA ST so im sure a Fiesta ST will follow, but maybe only in the EU markets though...

WE WANT A FIESTA ST!

I mean, who'd be dumb enough to think that we wouldn't want a cheap performance car like the ST? It'd be a huge hit, especially if they could get the price to undercut the MINI by a significant margin. Which (with $40,000 JCW Coopers possible,) shouldn't be too hard.

I thought the KA ST is just something a car mag dreamed up yet again with no real substance?

Well, Ford is partially right that the R&D costs won't necessarily be worth it if people are only buying it in one place. However, it may be necessary to do an ST no matter what, as given in the US that we tend to require a bit more gusto across the board. See the Honda Fit Sport as a primary example, a car tuned so well that I'm flabbergasted it isn't the standard version for the rest of the world.

As long as Ford offers the Fiesta in some kind of "sport" trim (that doesn't consist primarily of stickers and alloy wheels), I'll be happy. Given the car that I own now, I think that once the payments are done, I think its safe to say that the Ford Fiesta may be the first new car I actually have a good reason to go out and buy outright. That of course would be a three-door model in blue with a gray interior and a stick...

This article has amazed me because nearly every-other Fiesta I see is a ST. I do live in abit of a Ford strong hold but it still amazes me.

Hell, even in here, behind Gods backside, I see Focus STand Fiesta ST daily.. and if economy is what makes them worried, then they should do the Skoda thing and give it perky diesel engine.

Yes it is odd, there are ST fiesta and focus' everywhere in my part of london. Again I do live in a fast ford stronghold also though!

Yup same here, nearly all are ST's! and nearly all are either dark blue or black!

Round my way, black blue white and orange are the most popular.

Black orange and white for the focus ST.

White and blue for the fiesta ST.

There appears to be a person close to ford on a carspyshots.com and it seems a KA ST is more likely than a fiesta ST afterall!

I see a lot of Neon Orange Focus RS's around, probably because thats the best colour it looks in (it was the original concept cars colour I think)... Lots of Fiesta's around also have these white stripes down the bonnet and along the skirts..
