What is the deal with hardly anyone having a mic for their PS3? Every team based game I've played online with the PS3 from COD:MW, to Resistance2 have only 1 in 20 people with a mic! Your playing a team based game that relies heavily on communication, how can you seriously play with any competitive spirit without being able to communicate important details about the match.

The other issue, this seems to be with only certain games like R2, is having to push a button before anyone can hear you. Of course the main problem with this is, when your defending a position and either need more help or want to let the rest of your team know your about to go down, you have to remember to push another button so you can tell them, ridiculous.

I'm in the xBSx clan on XBL for many different FPS and if we had to deal with this we would definitely be at a major disadvantage. I'm sure the main reason that no one has a Mic is Sony didn't ship one with the system, but come on guys you need a mic for online gaming, except for say UNO. So is their some terrible thing about having and using a mic I'm missing?:ouch:

Socom is, for obvious reasons, the best ps3 game for communicating. I love it, my favorite shooter ever. Some people hate it though. If you haven't tried it yet, go out and get it, or rent it. It's a blast. If you do get it, send me a friends invite. I have some guys that are really fun to play with. Were all older, so you don't have to deal with a lot of the nonsense you do, when your playing with the young kids.

It probably has something to do with the lack of a headset being packaged with the console. One comes with the good X360 versions.

Also, in regard to pressing a button to talk, I think the way Halo did that was perfect. Without pressing a button, anyone nearby can hear you. When pressed, everyone on your team can hear you, the enemy cannot.

Having one would be a great convenience, but I hate them so much. I just hate it when somebody has their's on the entire time. Because I cannot stand how they are used, I fear I might use one the same way or might get one that's really bad. Knowing I could be just as annoying as they stops me from even thinking about them. I know, I've ended games with people online because of their horrible mics.

If I knew what models were good or even great, how to properly use one, and learn of a quick way to stop idiots from using their's, I would definitely be a lot more interested in them. For now, nope...

Sony made some good ones with a mute button specifically for Socom series back in the Ps2 era though now the 360 is getting the same treatment with the Party option.

I'm always surprised every time I'm playing LBP that when I start chatting, how many say/type how cool that is and wish they had a mic... Then I ask them if they have a Bluetooth headset for their mobile phones, and most of the time they say yes. :odd:

Needless to say, after I explain how easy it is to pair any BT headset to the PS3, they seem genuinely shocked.

Makes me think that perhaps there are a lot of PS3 users who have BT headsets who just don't realize they can use them with their PS3. The same with those that have the PS Eye whom I have found on occasions didn't realize they could use it to do in-game voice chat with... which is a great mic to use BTW, especially if you have more than one person in the room that wants to participate in the chat.

I personally prefer to have the voice chat from others output directly to my ear, this way I can not only quickly adjust the volume on their voices, use the mute button, but also because it's sometimes hard to hear them clearly when the output is through the same audio signal as the rest of the in-game sounds.

I use a 10AUD bt headset and it works a charm. I think, from my experience in CoD, I have worked out that 80% of all US players have mics and about 15% of australian players have headsets. Depends what region the game is from I guess and whether or not you can go on world wide servers.

I noticed too that not many people use a headset. But most of my friends do, so I got one myself as well. Especially when playing a FPS together, the tactical advantage is huge. And it encourages teamplay. But the way it is used by most players (kiddies) is to spam music or profanity across the server, so I can see why people are a bit reluctant to use one.

So next time you see me in a game that supports voice chat, let's kick some ass together!

I got myself one of these babies BTW, works perfectly, very clear sound:

Of course it would be perfect at such a look of superiority.

On the other hand I have this...

I have the Eye and use it everytime I'm online with Burnout Paradise. I did pick up a BT earpiece, but found it wasn't as good as it should be for $50. It kept falling off my ear. I've debated borrowing the Missus BT earpiece for her phone, but haven't yet.

With the First BT I set it up as just a Mic. The game sounds still came through the stereo. It made it much easier to interact and talk as you played.

I know how you feel about it slipping off your ear, mine is actually minus the ear hook. I would never have game audio coming through my ear, certain way to become deaf:lol:.

I have my voice in the mic and players voices in the ear but nothing else. Everything else comes out of the AMP.

I had a Jabra BT2040 but brought that back to Best Buy shortly after buying it because it was uncomfortable. I now have a different Jabra (can't remember the model number) that is apparently not sold anywhere as it is not on the Jabra, Target or Best Buy websites.

Edit: Looks like it is a BT215.

I will definitely rent Socom soon, I know it is somewhat similar to RB6. I joined xBSx in the first RB6 for the 360, but have never tried Socom, not really sure why. Thanks for the invite though and see you soon.👍

Your absolutely right, I guess developers don't want to appear to be copying each other, but damn it worked so well.💡

I have an issue with Sony's update on the mic compatibility, I used to be able to link my K800i to my PS3 and use that as a mic but they went and realeased a patch early in 2008 that meant it wouldn't even be detected by bluetooth. If Sony bought back compatibility for Mobile Phones then I would use mine.

That's cool, I never knew you could use a phone. Damn, that's why the PS3 is cool, it does stuff that no one else has even thought about, too bad they nixed it.:yuck:

Theoretically, you should be able to use any phone (or other device) that can be used as a BT headset (which most of them can). But I can understand why Sony wouldn't want that. ;)

I mostly don't use chat when I play with people I don't know.
I even got killed a couple of times due to people (kids) talking to much without actually giving useful information.
My solution is now to just plug in my headset and leave it on the desk in front of me with the mic muted.

Same, open comms just leave you being annoyed by someone playing music or something stupid. Push to talk may be slower, but if you're playing seriously with a clan or team you know, you would keep the comms clear of useless dribble either way. You can't hear 2 poeple at once, push to talk eliminates that, which is why Socoms of old always had better comms then, well any other game on PS2.

I can't use a headset when on my friends because you have to mute half of each room anyway so there's no point bothering.

Its true that mics are best when your among friends, but a great way to find friends is by using the mic, you find out if they are idiots kids or grown ups, and can then send a FR if they are the later, that's how I hooked up with xBSx. If my mic was laying down on the desk because I was playing a public match, then I would of not been a quality player, unable to use team tactics, and unable to be a key player. I would not of even know that they were using those tactics, since voices out put from my Surround Sound are overcome by all the other sounds. Please please use your mic when and if GT5P ever gets chat, you will find other great grown ups out there.👍

Mic in a driving game is different then in a shooter.
When you're listening for footsteps, you don't want to have a kid yelling in your ear.

+ I haven't met anyone yet while online that uses the headset for what it's intended.
I do have it on at the start of a cod match, but when people make to much noise before the start I take it off again.

I bought myself a cheap bluetooth headset to play COD4 with, although it was a bit of a pain to use and since haven't used it. After playing home BETA, I went straight to Amazon and bought the official PS3 headset. It arrived in the post yesterday but I haven't had a chance to try it yet, hopefully I will get chance soon and I will post back with my thoughts on it, it auto pairs via USB, which I know will save a bit of hassle from the off. The quick mute will no doubt come in handy very handy, I can't comment on the sound quality as of yet.

I got my BT headset with the new SOCOM, $50 headset for 20$ (added on to the $40 for the game by itself). I dont always use it for games like NHL or CoD but in SOCOM its really good. Especially SOCOM because most games, like you guys have said already, have guys who are actually USING their mics and not just being annoying. Every SOCOM match I get into 3/4 of the people are using headsets which is nice.

A cool feature in SOCOM is that you normally press L2 for chat with your team but if you sneak up behind someone you can use the chat and the enemy will hear you right before they die. Just a little feature I think is cool.

I have a Rock Band mic, a Bluetooth cellphone ear-thing and a Logitech USB headset, but I don't leave them connected. My sister and I are total potty mouths. It's kinda like watching AVGN without the reviews. I don't think it will carry well into LittleBigPlanet with the open mic. :ouch:

Its funny that the game I have seen the most mic users on is GRAW2. Nearly everyone uses them and its really great fun, pity games like COD dont have people using them as much or just using them to broadcast music or sing annoyingly. I guess Clancy people are more dedicated! :sly:

i just picked up a motorola blue tooth piece and i love it..... besides using it for when i drive sadly the only time i use it is a random chat on ps3 (the actual chat room) or burnout paradise.

tried it on battlefield bad company and its terrible there, otherwise i have no other games that have a need for it.

I've got the official Sony headset for my PS3 and the sound quality is terrible. Everyone sounds muffled and booming, the standard 360 wired headset is much, much clearer and much easier to use, too. Sony really should have packaged something like the Microsoft one with the PS3. It would save so much hassle and would make online games much, much better.

That is not the mic....the other peoples mic's are $10 pieces of rubbish, therefore they sound really bad.

As legendary said its not your headset its other peoples cheap ones that your hearing. The reason why everything sounds great on the 360 is that everyone (well mostly everyone) is using the included 360 headset which is of a good quality. With the PS3 you have a massive inconsistancy of headsets both good and bad and unfortunately its something you have to live with or just mute individuals.

Robin.
