I'm looking for a headset that will let me do all of these things at the same time:

- hear the in-game sounds through the headset only
- hear the other players' chat
- allow me to chat with other players (microphone)

Can you get both the in-game sound AND player chat simultaneously through the headset, or do they have to be separate? I'd like to keep the house quiet while gaming at certain hours, but still be able to play using chat in doing so.

thanks

Ummm... don't headsets in general already have a mic?

And everything you'd normally hear on TV will be heard through the speakers, game SFX and voice chat.

 Yes, I suppose they do.

I don't want sound through the speakers, I want the sound through the headset only. Is this generally an option to combine chat and everything in one headset this way?

By speakers I meant the speakers ON the headset.....and it's not an option to my knowledge.... headsets are just another output to hearing anything... have you used an mp3 player before?

I've only played on consoles previously, and for those I could only use the headsets to hear chat, NOT the in-game sounds as well. Maybe I was unaware of how to get both through the headset, but I hadn't been able to before and this is why I asked.

And honestly, I am a professional musician, so yes. Any other helpful questions?

Not to sound rude, but I figured people who have used headphones before would have noticed headsets are basically headphones with a microphone attached to it... at least, that's what I've always seen them; never used one ever.

As AOS pointed out, headsets for a PC are just the audio out, so both game and chat sounds (along with any other system sounds, music, etc) and then a microphone line in. USB ones do much the same as well.

Razer, Logitech, SteelSeries, and others all make things that will work fine for this. I personally just use a desk microphone from Logitech ($10 at Wal Mart years ago) and some Razer Orcas I won. This way I can just use the mic without having to have the headphones on all the time, which is nice for skype and when I'm running around in the house.

I recommend these:

Sorry I don't know the name of them this is just a picture of mine. They do all the things that you want though.

I always view Turtle Beach as more of a console deal. There are so many options in the PC market for different prices and qualities I would consider many, many things before them.
