The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) lately has been pulling out all stops in order to ensure that the Blu-ray beats out the HD-DVD in the next generation format war. A new rumor that Japan and North America will share the same region in the future disc certainly has some heads turning.

The change would certainly satisfy gamers who import gaming products from Japan in order to enjoy them much earlier. The need for borderline legal mod chips would significantly decrease, encouraging the purchase of legitimate copies of games, thus boosting sales.

Of course, the move would benefit a multitude of other consumers, including those who enjoy Japanese products such as Anime, which has become immensely popular in North America. Game developers have been quick to create games based on series', and giving fans the ability not only to play games but Blu-Ray copies of the show straight from Japan would certainly also boost sales.

This generation's media battle has much at stake. Consumers are the real deciding factor in the end, not specifications. The release of stand alone players, the PlayStation 3, and the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 should give clues to who is the victor in the coming months. We were already talking about this in the "New PS3" thread.

I think it will happen. It makes a lot more sense if Sony made the PS3 this way, than not.

This would be really awesome, and would solve most of my problems as far as region coding go. I watch a lot of Japanese DVDs(cause I'm Japanese), and would love to play imported Japanese games like the Dragon Quest series. Currently, I'm limited to Japanese movies & games(PS2-wise) officialy released in the States. Even if the removal of region coding only affects the Blu-rays, it still would be nice feature.

As far as the HD-DVDs vs the Blu-rays go, I don't think HD-DVD has a chance. Sony has a superior format(though HD-DVD is cheaper), way too many powerful allies, and that's just the begining.

If they want to win the war much more. Then they need European Blu Ray's to also share the same region.

I wish they'd drop all the regions and stick with one. That'd make everything much much cheaper.

And with the artificially inflated prices of most optical media anyway, it's not that they'd be losing money if people started buying cross-region.
