I'm 17 and have been getting nosebleeds as far back as I can remember. They used to be a summer thing, would come for a month or two and then go away. Eventually they became more and more common, so at 14 I had my nose cauterized with silver nitrate. That stopped them for about a year, and after I had it done a second time it stopped them for two years.

Three months ago they returned, so naturally I went to have it cauterized a third time. Except this time it didn't hold, and so I had it done again (that was three days ago, actually). I was fine for a while, thought they were gone for good (or at least a year), and then earlier today I had a nosebleed.

I guess what I'm asking is 1) has anyone with nosebleeds had this done and 2) have you found any lifestyle changes etc. that helps? I know there are more invasive procedures, using electricity and whatever else but from what I've heard they are quite painful.

Basically these nosebleeds are incapacitating, embarrassing and sometimes can last pretty long. I'm hoping it's still a seasonal thing, but it's getting much cooler outside and I haven't seen any improvement.

High cholesterol diet? Clog up those nasty capilliaries!

Used to have them all the time. Yes, they're irritating. But I grew out of them eventually. Is there any pattern as to when they occur? Time of day? Strenuous activity? Blood pressure?

Kind of an awkward subject, but I understand your frusteration.

Are you using nasal sprays for anything?
I used nasal sprays for my allergies for a while, and my nose was raw.

Don't use them for more than 3 or more days in a row.

What is the severity of the bleed? Just a little blood, or does it drip, and drip, and drip. My worst drenched 5 tissues in about 20 seconds.

As for letting them scab, I usually let them scab for about 6 hours, then cleared my nose GENTELY with a tissue on my finger.

Hope this helps

Get well soon,

When I was younger, I always had nosebleeds. Whenever I go out to a hot place or standing under the sun for a long time, I started to sneeze and then my nose bleeds... The last time I had it was 2 years ago and never had one until today.

The best advice is to consult a doctor mate ;)

Get well soon! (I want to see more of your track design!)

Wow, they are pretty bad. I used to get a lot, some could last a couple of hours. I've had my nose cauterized twice, and now only one nostril bleeds, and that will only bleed at certain points in the year now. I can understand your frustration, as it can come out of nowhere and is a general nuisance. I don't know what I can recommend other than keep getting it cauterized. The second time did the job on one nostril at least. Perhaps I was just lucky, or perhaps you are unlucky.

Do you know what triggers them? I get them all the time when going from a dry environment to humidity. So they'll randomly start in the spring when I'm used to a dry Michigan winter and the humidity kicks in. Also, I get them a lot when I first jump into a steamy shower. It's annoying for sure.

I tend to get a lot of them in hot, humid weather. Which is strange because most people who have nosebleeds seasonally have them in dry winter (that's what I've heard anyway). There was a point over the summer where I would get them once or twice a day. Then I just decided to do nothing, give it as much time as possible to scab and heal and maybe that would help. The problem then was that I couldn't breathe out of half my nose :grumpy:

Strangely I never get them during physical activity. But if I bend down for more than a second, they usually start. They aren't tied to allergies, because I get those in the fall and spring.

I think I'll just wait till the end of September and see if anything changes.

Thanks everyone 👍

As long as you've had your blood pressure checked and that's normal, and there's no accompanying headache, then you're just going to have to put it down to one of those annoying things that happens. It could be hormonal - I do very occasionally get random nosebleeds, however when I was pregnant it was on an almost weekly basis with no warning.

When you do have one, take some anti-inflammatory medication, put your head down nice and low, pinch the fleshy part of your nose (uncomfortable but necessary) and place something like a bag of frozen peas onto the back of your neck. All of these interventions should slow and stop the bleed relatively quickly. Once it's stopped and the blood has clotted, DO NOT pick or blow your nose AT ALL - let the scabs/clots come away of their own accord. It may be gross and your nose may be blocked, but it's the best thing to do!

They're not that uncommon in your teens from my experience, I used to get loads during the summer, they then stopped and started again after a scrum (Rugby reference, for you yanks, think NFL without the 70s shoulder pads) collapsed on top of me.

Also, nosebleeds aren't embarrassing. Men are supposed to show blood!

I was in the same boat as you when I was your age. I had horrible nosebleeds when I was 13-15 and didn't stop completely until I was 18. I related them to 'growing pains.'

Are you growing tall? I was. I'm now 6"9' and whenever I had a 'growth spurt' I had nosebleeds (and leg cramps.) They got worse in the Summer, but they were a year-round occurrence.

Also, watch out when playing sports. I got nailed in the face constantly thanks to football, basketball, water polo and soccer. Getting into fights (wrestling and general horse play) didn't help much, either.

When you get one, a box of tissue and movies are the only cure. That, and taking it easy for a while.

Didn't know it could be age related. That would make sense though, cause I've been getting them more often now than I did when I was a little kid. I guess I am of the growing age too...I'm hoping you're all right about it being a temporary thing.

For me the first blood nose I could remember was when I was 7 and then I never had one again until I woke up one morning when I was 16, I scrunched up my nose to kinda stretch out my face and then I saw this red spot on my white t-shirt. Now ever since then I've gone from not having one in 9 years to having them about 5-6 times a year for the past 4 years now.
My best guess is the dry air since that usually is when I get them, But what started this when I was 16?

i had one nosebleed when i was a kid, but that's what i get for stuffing a lego up my nose lol

I had quite frequent nosebleeds back in my teenager times, but that was mostly due to low air humidity. That probably explains why you only have them in summer.

I think the best runny nose I"ve ever seen is my daughter's. It was running blue for hours. Wife didn't believe me when I told her she broke off a marker tip in there, but once we got to the emergency room... yup. There it was. Took three different doctors before they finally saw it (yes... nobody believes me...)... after half-an-hour of poking and probing with various scopes and probes, I simply had her blow it out while I pinched her nose.

Thank goodness she doesn't get nosebleeds like Daddy did.

That's actually a really good story.

I gotta ask though, why didn't you try to get her to blow it out in the first place?

Have you ever watched kids do the funniest things on tv. If not youtube it then you will see that kids will do pretty much anything.

I do.. But I just can't help myself thinking why kids doing those things

Well, pardon me because when I was younger I also used to do things that we think it's silly nowadays :embarrassed: Pretty much all of us when we were kids...

used to get them loads at 13-15, if i wasnt running out of the room thanks to social anxiety sickness it was for nosebleeds  nowadays only get them at intervals of dry weather.

ha i remember waking up with a nosebleed laying on my back, choking and passing out, oh and having a hypo at the same time
