Set up:
PS3 connected to Panasonic TH37PX80 plasma via HDMI
PS3 connected to Sony IS10 home cinema system coax input via optical-coax convertor

Problem:
I get proper surround sound no problem when playing GT5P, but not when playing bluerays.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks,
Chris

Yes - But I can't remember until I get home and have a chance to look in the menus...

Don't have a PS3, so I'm sorry to be guessing, but is there a setup menu where you have to select which output path the digital audio takes from Blu-Ray? It may be an either/or between HDMI and optical, one or the other but not both.

I'd appreciate it if you get chance 👍

Under "Video Settings", "BD Audio Output Format (Optical)", mine is set to "Bitstream", which, depending on the BD disc, gives me either DD5.1 or DTS.

Just watched the opening scene from Transformers and it worked like a charm... thanks a million.

I had the same problem right after I got my new receiver. It drove me completely crazy until I figured it out.

Flerbizky is right on the money, but just keep in mind, bitstream will limit you to Dolby Digital and DTS, both of which are lossy (not lousy mind you) audio formats due to their compression schemes. If given the opportunity, I highly recommend listening to the lossless PCM, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD MA as found on Blu-ray discs and even some of the games, like GT5P... the difference can be quite impressive. 👍

If you don't mind using stereo or Dolby Prologic processing to create a surround matrix, you can even enjoy these HD audio formats over your digital optical cable. Ideally though, if your audio processor/receiver can accept it, HDMI will give you up to 7 channels of discrete HD audio.

When I don't use the bitstream, my receiver just says multi channel. And when I play GT5p it says dolby digital. How do I get dolby true hd, or DTS-HD. My receiver supports those, but I don't know how to access them.

And max supported on SPDIF anyway - Which was the case here ;-)

You have to use HDMI to get TrueHD and DTS-HD. So unless your receiver i capable of at least HDMI passthru, you won't..

It is, and I have the ps3 running with an hdmi into my receiver, then and hdmi from receiver to tv. My receiver supports dolby true hd, and dts-hd master audio. But whenever I play a blu ray my receiver just says multi channel. When I use bitstream it says, dolby digital or dts, it just depends on the movie. Could it possibly be the type of hdmi cord I have? Or do I have something wrong in my ps3 sound settings? Whenever I do the automatic sound settings, the ps3 activates all of the sound options.

In order to receive a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HS MA audio signal that has not been unpacked (uncompressed), you absolutely need to use HDMI 1.3, which the PS3 has and presumably your receiver, otherwise they shoudl not be advertising that it supports either of those formats. The cable should not be an issue, although there are now HDMI 1.3 certified cables.

However, because the PS3 already has both of those decoders, and supports PCM, all you have to do is let the PS3 do the decoding, then allow it to send the unpacked lossless PCM signal to your receiver via HDMI.

This is exactly how I have mine set-up in our family room, as that receiver, a harman/kardon 7.1 AVR 347, does not have a built-in Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA decoder, and I still get the exact same 7.1 channel lossless HD audio.

All you have to do is connect an HDMI cable from your PS3 to your AVR.

Then go to the Audio Output Settings and select HDMI, and Manual, and then select all the output formats that your AVR supports.

Now go to the BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) settings located in the Video Settings menu. Now select Linear PCM.

This will tell your PS3 to decode any packed audio signal, like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, and then send the same unpacked signal to your receiver. Your receiver should automatically recognize the PCM signal and process it accordingly.

Voila, you will now be able to enjoy multi-channel lossless HD audio tracks that come with Blu-ray movies as well as games, like GT5P. 👍

Thanks alot, I don't know what I would do without GTplanet. Scaff has the same receiver as mine, and has given much advice, and help with it.
