NOW FINISHED - Before I start... thoughts on my cockpit design?

Finished :D The design evolved a lot since the beginning, and having a curved wood front was predictably very tricky. I think all the work paid off well though, and thanks VERY much to everyone who made suggestions!

:gtpflag:

It looks small because of the wide angle lens, but that's actually a Samsung 63" Plasma with it.

It slides closer together for storage, and apart for use. There's holes evenly spaced down on the floor of the unit, so that two bolts can be placed there to hold the front & back in place. No slipping forward as you press on the pedals or such.

So music won't interfear with the buttkicker, it's provided by my iPod. Music plays through a 2.1 system under the wheel, and the iPod sits into a powered dock.

Reverse mounted G27 pedals, and erm... some cables from the buttkicker amp.

Wow!! I hate to admit I thought your idea seemed cheesy early on, but it came together nicely! Great work!

I'm intrigued by your speaker placement too. What's it like having that sub right in front??

Thanks :D For someone that's never built anything before it was quite a learning experience! There were some frustrating moments too, but it was all totally worth it.

I have a 5.1 system in the room already, so I use that for the game sound effects, and the sub + 2 speakers under the wheel in front for the iPod music. It seems to work perfectly. I can certainly hear the sub, but can't really tell where it is (if that makes any sense).

Like Mr Latte said, two butt kickers or such would be better than one. I may still add another at some point, but especially with shipping them to New Zealand, they're not cheap.

Excellent Design, Excellent construction. Overall Great Job! I really like the sliding capability, Awesome!

Thanks everyone!!

I was actually playing it when we had a huge earthquake here a couple of weeks ago. For a split second at the start I thought oooooh I've got my buttkicker turned up way too high, haha! Then I realized what was happening. I jumped up to grab the TV so it wouldn't fall and crush the front of the racing cockpit.

See, that is why I love kiwis, right there :)

Hope you and yours are all safe and well.

Thanks :)

For the gears, they look very low but actually they're easily within reach of my arm; no need to bend or stretch my arm (phew!). They are that low because when I want to shrink the unit down, most of the gear stick slides under the front part.

If I didn't have a sliding design, I'd probably put the gears a little higher, but actually only a little bit.

When moving house last weekend, some young boys (sons to someone helping us shift) saw my racing setup and were amazed. Even without the steering wheel or gears there, they were standing there pretending to drive. I bet it won't be long till they're asking to come back over and give it a try, hehe :D

Thanks :) :) It was lots of fun (and a huge learning experience!) building it, and I encourage anyone who loves racing games to give it a go.
