NTSC GT4 won't do HDTV!?

Hi there.

I'm an HDTV owner who purchased GT4 PAL for his PAL PS2 and was furious to see that they'd removed HDTV support from the PAL version.

Since all you NTSC users have been enthusing about how wonderful the HD modes are, I've gone to considerable lengths to follow suit: got a mod chip installed, imported a GT4 NTSC original. However, when I put the game in, it acts just like PAL: video output is 580i and the extra HDTV options don't appear in the Options menu.

Has anyone else tried this and had more success? I'm beginning to wonder if the game can tell that the PS2 is from a PAL region somehow.

Thanks!

I think that only the NTSC J version had HDTV support........not the NTSC UC or PAL...........I think your out of luck :guilty: .....I know it sucks because surely if it was in the Japanese release than it would be in the others........but im sure no other regional GT4 has HD support.......

My US version says it has HD support, but I lack the resources to confirm that it works.

Um, VTGT07 (or anyone with the US NTSC version, for that matter), could you go into the Options screen, select the Screen option (where you select 4:3 or 16:9) and see if there's any mention of 1080i? I'd expect it to appear in there, but I just get the widescreen ratio stuff on mine, no HDTV stuff at all.

Is it possible that only the NTSC-J release had HDTV? There seem to be so many Americans talking about it, I'm sure the US release must have it too.

All NTSC versions of GT4 do have HDTV support. I've played the US NTSC using a YUV to RGB converter and a computer monitor. The options say 480i, 480p and 1080i, and they all work fine.

No, a PAL PS2. I don't have a modchip though, I'm running it from HDD.

Ooh, now that's interesting! There may be light at the end of this particular tunnel after all. I'll investigate how much the HDD addon will cost. I've blown £140 and made not a jot of progress so far, things can't get much worse!

Edit: Slightly broader PS2 question, but closely related:

When I turn my PS2 on without a disc in, it outputs 580i straight away (my TV says so). Is there anyway of switching a PS2 to use NTSC by default? I should say I'm only using a Magic 3 chip rather than some snazzy flashable thing. I only bought it to play GT4 NTSC, sob!

My US game plays 1080i just fine, my console is a 1st-generation PS2.
1080i mode is only used in the actual racing, missions, licenses, and replays. All other screens (menu, home, garage, etc.) switch back to 480i standard TV, and the HDTV settings are not retained when you power off the PS2, I suppose to prevent moving it to another TV and finding you can't see anything.

Photo mode, the screen with camera controls, is also 480i, so I switch to 480i when doing photos, because my set blanks out for almost 2 seconds when switching modes, which is very annoying.

I'm running the US NTSC on a first generation PS2 style console, using Monster components (RGB) going into a 50" LCD Hitatchi, and I have the options for 480p and 1080i in my screen options. 1080i for race and replay, and a lil flicker flash back to 480p for everything else. 👍

A component signal is different from RGB, so I suppose you use a Monster component cable and the component input of your Hitachi.

Yes, I'm using component cables, with component enabled in the PS2 video settings. HDTV is working through the setup as I can get the 480P goodness on the same PS2 in Burnout, Tekken etc, and my Xbox will happily display the HDTV modes all day long.

If I can just figure out a way to stop my PS2 thinking that it's a PAL model, maybe the HDTV options will appear. No progress on figuring how to do this though! I have an Action Replay, perhaps I could poke a memory address or something.

As an aside, how can Sony make it so hard to enjoy something I've already bought twice over? Tossers.

You don't have to do any of that. A modded PAL PS2 will switch to the game mode automatically. I have an Australian PS2 (PAL) and it works with a PAL GT4 with no hd modes. It also works on an NTSC GT4 (got it from Lik Sang) with all the HD modes - 480i, 480p and 1080i.

When your GT4 game boots does it say "Sony ... America" or "Sony ... Europe", that should tell you if your game is an American version or a PAL version, not sure about the Japanese version though. hth.

That bloody well did help. I wondered why the seal was broken on the NTSC copy - it's only got a sodding PAL disc in it!

Right, back to Lik-Sang it is!

Either in 480p or 1080i my menus are always in 480i, not 480p. Can you confirm if your setup alows the menus to be displayed in 480p?

The 1080i over here won't work, how do you have it set up? We have the PS2 running through HDSatellite receiver and the 720p works fine, but 1080i won't work. We have a Toshiba widescreen HDTV and just can't seem to get it going. I understand the 1080i is interlaced (hence the i) and therefore not so good fo fast movement so maybe the 480p is best but still.... maybe it's the TV, maybe it's the HDSatellite. Any suggestions? Running directly to the TV doesn't work either....

you must be using component video hookups from the PS2 first of all, and you probably want to go directly to the TVset with those, assuming the tv supports 1080i (some toshibas will only support up to 480p)

Yup, make sure the component input of your hdtv supports 1080i. If you have more than one component input, it is likely that not all of them will support 1080i.

Like you said, the menus always are in 480i, there's no way around that.
