IcemanGER
Hi, to everyone first of all.
I'm kinda new here and would like to know if it is OK to participate? I used to compete in another forum before and have a few miles of experience in GT4 and especially the Nuerburgring !!!
This is the most challenging competition I've ever been into ! :scared:

I tried a few laps so far and must say, that you really need a strategy. Especially for the 2nd lap.

Setup wise, I'm trying to soften it up b/c of the curb riding. The stiff setup will upset the car to much, imo. The car is already very upset to start with, lol.

There is a video out there, 2 laps in a yellow bird. It is the real thing and if you haven't seen it, go get it !
I'm trying to find a link......back later.

Welcome IcemanGER:tup:

Of course your welcome to run, always good to see new drivers even at this final stage. One thing I would say thought to any newcomers....if your going to submit a time officially, please indicate to me if you want to be included in the official points standings.

The reason for this is that there are people who have participated each week and have worked hard to build up a points total and move up the leaderboard, if you wish to submit a time but not be included in the points thats completely fine, you will still get acknowledged with your relevant finishing position.:)

The real laps of the Yellowbird are floating around the web at various places, very impressive indeed, one site that hosts them is Nurburgring videos

Im finding that the Ruf likes a stonger front damper than rear, so a bit of a mix and match setup is working for me...!

David

I am dissappointed and humbled that I am not a better driver. But, despite all that, I am enjoying this type of competition (stock HP, N3s). I prefer the realism as opposed to maxing out the tire grip and HP and letting her rip. It takes a great deal of "skill" just to get this car around the track.

I've also toyed with a few other cars with N3s and they also require a level of "skill" beyond that needed with a "Full Tune" but not nearly as much as the YB. IMHO this is they way to "play" this game. Why should we use a "simulation" game to modify cars to unrealistic levels and basically turn it into something no better than an "arcade racer" game?

In the future I will probably focus more on this type of game play. Of course it does highlight what I feel is a significant "flaw" in the game. You cannot use your garage cars (with adjustable parts, custom wheels & wings, etc) in custom tailored races (difficulty and multi-lappers, etc). The closest thing available is Family Cup which only allows 2 laps. On most tracks the N3s wouldn't even warm up in a 2 lap event. Arcade mode of course allows race configuration options but you're only allowed to adjust certain things (tires, HP & wt) on "stock" cars.

I have requested "cheat" codes that would allow the use of garage cars in arcade mode but so far haven't gotten any results. If arcade mode "multi-player" allows garage cars it would seem that allowing garage cars in other arcade modes should be reasonably feasible? Can anyone tell me if I've overlooked something in the game that allows garage cars in "arcade" mode...is it available with some scenario of gold licenses or missions or % complete?

Anyway I've spent too much time with TOCA 3...shoulda left it in the wrapper until the finale was over. My already limited driving ability has slipped yet another notch because of training myself to drive TOCA vs GT4. It would probably take another 600 miles just to get back to my weak previously posted splits but despite that I did enjoy taking the YB for a spin this morning...now if we could just put the YB on other tracks with multi-lap AI events and be able to tweak the suspension a bit. I tried the YB in arcade mode and it is noticably stiff (compared to my softened "garage" copy) and a little more difficult and unforgiving to drive as a result.

Thanks to Dave for introducing us to the mans way of driving where we're required to utilize some skill relative to steering, gas and brake inputs. And a big "hats-off" to Dave (and anyone else) who is able to drive this combo with a DS2. If I didn't have a DFP I would've smashed the PS2 to bits, put the game disk down the disposal, kicked the dog and probably written Ruf an ugly letter wondering why anybody would want a car that you have to pull over and stop to adjust the radio volume so you can stay totally focused on the driving because the split second you don't the car immediately goes anywhere but where you want it to go.

Rant over,
Ronny

Wow, I was wondering how you guy's came up with those impressive times. I should have read the first post better. I was working on the family cup till now and did not see the hot lap competition. I'm pretty much with "goixoye" ! It's very hard to keep that beast on track and if you make it to pass some AI's they will get back at ya and bump you off the track.

FYI, like Dave suggested.....I'll put my times inn but won't disdurb the leaderboard !
cheers and good luck

Aaaarrghh, efforts must be doubled! Be interested to see how close we are at the finish zoxxy!

@Ronny, I find the Ruf not too bad, however its a car you learn and as you say going and driving something else then coming back to the Ruf can leave you confused as to why you keep leaving the track!

For me im seeing that braking much earlier than I used to is making me faster, being ready with a small turn of opposite lock even applying it before you think you need it seems to work and in most corners you can drive with the throttle rather than upsetting it with big steering inputs.

I had a few more tries in the AI race before work this afternoon, no success but my best effort saw me pass the SRT10 just before T1, the Cobra just after T2 and the Zonda just after T3.....however needing to redline every gear to get past the Zonda left me with too much braking to do for Metzgesfeld and I ended up across the grass backwards watching the pack go by....quite surreal!!

My best strategy i think which is "do-able" is to take the cars in these positions :

SRT10 - Just after T3 where he is slow exiting the corner, watch for him coming over though...

Cobra - Just after Ex-Mühle as you go over the crest take him on the right

Zonda - exiting bergwerk get over to the right and power past, he might make you put two on the grass though which is a bit scary!

Skyline and Viper - Easy to take both these at once exiting Karussell, which would have been great had i not tapped the back end of the Skyline entering the Karussell:banghead: and screwed up what was looking to be a great lap!

Think this is the most enjoyable racing ive had so far with GT4 bar none!

cheers everyone

David

Geeez, I don't know how you guy's do it? I can't get a clean lap together ! Especially at the last third of the track I'm off 2 or 3 times. It's so hard to keep that beast on the track.
Is some one using a wheel? If so, did it make a big difference?
Also, do you shift or use automatic trans?

Oh man, I've spent WAY too much time on this...

My best clean lap so far had a T10: 6'43.xxx.

But I have seen a dirty 6'40.xxx. It's just incredible how many laps I've thrown away, usually having a moment at some totally new part of the course that hasn't caused me a problem up to then. Incredibly frustrating.

I have also gone in a different direction to most people with the setup. I'm trying to drive this car sideways, rally style, so I've tried to make it as progressive as possible. I found the high camber settings people are running caused it to be too snappy when recovering from a slide. So here it is:

114/119
5/7
0.8/0.3
BB: 3/3

Answering IcemanGER's question, I use a wheel and manual shift (changing with the stick usually). I really don't know how I would keep it on the road using a DS2.

I have managed over 5 hours of restarts, with no fully completed lap, and have lost all my hair.

I have had T1's of 46 seconds, then managed to keep it on the track with a T1 of 48.BS.

I am not happy.

I have tried and tried and tried to get the YB round the course, and failed and failed more times than ever before.

The most annoying thing for me is that ive done a good lap on N2's ages ago, which just flowed out of me, and i know if i drive long enough, that same situation will happen again, but after 5 hours, it hasnt.

I have managed one lap round, without falling off, and i know i am at least ten seconds down on what i could have had, had i stayed on the course on my flyers.

But, this is a very respectable competition, and i am not about to submit something dirty, so i have had to settle for the first, and i do mean the FIRST lap i have finished.

T10: 6'44.657

I knew, crossing the T10 line, that i had lost 4 seconds oin the last ten corners, and i was very frustrated by that, but by that time, if i hadnt completed a lap and then switched the ps2 off, i would have smashed it.
grrrr.

Good luck to all of you, im off to try the AI race now.

This week, i have just run out of time again.

Good luck to you all!!!

:irked:👍

is it oke if i only give you my hotlap

You know you still have another week? Deadline is March 13.

Come on man, everyone is in the same boat so hop back in the YellowBeast and do it. Oh, and don't go and do the AI race if you want to reduce frustration. ;)

he wasnt aware that it was a two week race, and when i txt him to let him know he seemed half chuffed so i think he'll definately submit now.
good you pointed it out tho, cos i only came to check the results for him!!!!

This is true, i did know it was a two weeker, but was unaware that the whole thing lasted two weex.
I thought that the hotlapper was the first week and the two lapper was week two, if you see what i mean.

I thought i had to submit on Monday, but seeing as there are no results, i guess i got it wrong!

This means two things: one, im happy i get to run the Ruf round the ring some more and unlock a bit more time i hope.
And two, im unhappy i get to run the Ruf round the ring some more and fail to unlock a bit more time i know.

This can be a very frustrating car to lap quickly in, especially when the difference can be holding your throttle and your nerve into one corner, and releasing it and losing the car into the armco on the next.

So many restarts, so many restarts so many restarts......

Either way this means i get chance to have another crack, so Dave, for the time being, please ignore the first time submission from me!

As regards the AI race, i have a few words to put in, now that i have had a go.

It would appear that i am coming up with exactly the same field as you Dave, and for your info the A-spec points on offer are 51.
That would be a good way of knowing we are all on an even keel here.
Anyway, here's my strategy:
I know i can play through the first Hatzenbach corners as i stay with the red Viper, as he slows down way too much to get ahead, but as he exits the last left hander heading for the bridge, im in 2nd, and right behind him, accelerating hard into third.
He moves to the left just long enough to run a bit of grass and track and pass him on his right, as you cross the bridge and hit the jump into Flugplatz. If you were close enough to him out of the left hander, you should be totally clear of him by the incline to the jump, and have ample time to hit the brakes, bring the car down to 110MPH ish and then hold her round the two right turns, accelerating all the way towards the Cobra.
If you have hit the throttle right, you may even need to brake as you approach the Cobra on his right, give him chance to move to the left, then drive right past him, using the Zonda in front as an indication of the line the Cobra will take, as remember, GT AI always travel in procession!
Once past the Cobra, i am starting to build up to 140/150MPH and just hitting the downward slope of the first fastest section of the course as i pass the Zonda, again on his right. He will stick to the left hand side all the way down the hill, giving you ample room to take him. Now some slight trickiness....
Firstly, after passing the Zonda, you need to knock the speed off the car a split second before you hit the crest following the dip, otherwise the nose will lift, and when it re-establishes itself with the tarmac, you'll be thrown right. aving done so, its steady brake and throttle moment, as you bring the car into 4th gear, then accelerate through the sweeping left hand turn towards the sandpit just before T2(Metzgesfeld?).
Its important to note that you should leave your braking as late as possible into the right hand turn, so that the Zonda doesnt catch you up and punt you into the sand, but once you start to apply the power out of the turn, you should be fine.... two left.

Down the hill, through the twisties, im catching the Concept all the time, so much so that i have to back off as we reach the 2nd gear section of the course, just before T3.
Just as with the first Viper, its important to be right behind the concepts butt as you exit the complex and head for T3. He will stay to the right, and you can pass him on the left, but only if you have the acceleration out of the final right turn before T3.
Once past him, start to brake for the sweeping left hander, Im all out of corner names here im afraid, but its a turn that loox easy, but commands respect.
The Final Viper is shining in blue and silver ahead of you, and its a balancing act keeping the car on the circuit, behind the dodge, and in front of the concept, who tries to punt you as you drop your speed.
Getting the Ruf into 3rd gear, i balance the throttle and ease her round the inside of the left turn, bring her down to second gear, and settle in behind the Viper for a while.
This car has a few tempting spots to overtake, but none offer the safety of the exit from the very bad hairpin (you know the one, swing her right, then pendulum her left and hit the throttle, the real grin inducer when done correctly!!) which leads to T4.
The Viper will sit on the left as it crosses T4, and take ages to pick up speed, leaving you to drive right past it on its right hand side, then hit the brakes for the double left at the bottom of the hill.
All cars passed, its time to settle into your lap, and start to get some speed back up.
So far, using this strategy, ive managed to drop 17 seconds off my fastest lap time by the end of lap one, and have managed a lap two that is only 1.8 seconds off my quickest clean save.
The key here is to replicate your fastest hotlap on lap two though, right Holl? cos you can bet that's what he's doin!

I hope that this helps some of you to see some earlier opportunities to get past those pesky AI.

My setup is:
110/110
5/5
0.8/2.4
Brakes 4/3
I'll hopefully be back next week with a submission.

Much more time to be knocked off, the question is whether life allows me the opportunity to try, and my patience holds out!!
Good Luck to all!

:irked:👍

Struggling with a DS2 at the moment, and a very slow and steady T10 of 7'11... :(

Will try with aids off... hmmm.

Sure is fun though! :D

VEXD: That was a nice write up, I'll have to see if I can get that line-up. I seem to always get the two SL Mercs.

Also, whenever the Viper GTS and the Concept GT-R are in the race, they seem to battle all the way around the first lap, making it impossible to pass. Very annoying.

Oh, and don't worry if you can't match your hotlap times in the race. Don't forget you have 80-odd kilos of fuel on board....

Hi everyone, some good battles going on by the sounds of things, I have been spending some time attempting the AI race and have completed a clean run and finished in 3rd.

I was attempting to pass the ai as soon as possible and on 1 occasion I saw myself in 3rd by T3, however every attempt, and i mean EVERY attempt saw either me tap the ai under braking or the ai either a)smash into me under braking or b) side swipe me as i passed them, one example of that was on a straight indicating the ai do intentionally go for you!

So my strategy tonight was to finish a race clean, I shadowed the Zonda in 6th place for lap 1, sooo many places to overtake him but just not the clear run ahead i needed, so im still in 6th by T9 and realising my overtake will be a really boring one down the straight...not what i had wanted to do.

I exited the long sweeper and past T10 and took 3 at once, later watching the in car view from the SL600 he gets taken by the M5 on the left and me on the right at the same time!! Under braking after T11 the pack closed right back up to me, crossed the line for an utterly abismal 8'11.xxx lap 1....

Lap 2 sees me some 12 seconds behind the Skyline concept which doesnt really change throughout the lap, Im pushing as hard as i dare knowing i need to bring the car home for this my first clean race, coming upto the mini Karussell i turn in as usual only to find by the exit im heading for the grass...the tail snaps wide and im sure i was off for a moment, but only 1 thing to do, complete the lap. T10 on lap 2 of 6'57.985 some 8 seconds slower than my current hotlap time, but never mind. Later inspection of the "moment" reveals the left rear on the line so jussst clean.

All in all an extremely disappointing race, however VEXD seems to have things working and passing the cars where i know its possible and have passed them myself!!

Anyway back to the hotlappers for me i think......:indiff:

Couple of things to note also :

The car is easier to drive in the Family cup compared to Hotlap - is this down to the extra weight with the fuel load?

After a few restarts the AI change strategy, a car once previously slow picks up speed from nowhere!

When re-entering and getting a different line up a car that was previously easy to pass can be a tougher competitor!

cheers all

David

Dave, I've noticed the car is easier to drive in the race, too. I can't secide whether it's the fuel or simpler physics coding from PD.

Well im sure its physics coding VT, i say this as to me the car handles differently, the weight and speed seems unchanged, but the car seems to slide so much more in Hotlap format, I will try and do a B spec test to see what differences in laptimes there might be....

Had another fruitless session with the AI this afternoon so my current save may have to do!!, decided to have another go at the Hotlap, found the car almost undriveable such is the difference between Family cup/Hotlap and thus changed some settings to try and settle the rear end into finding grip, ended up with 115/110 (unchanged), 6/2 (from 8/3) and 2.2/2.8 (from 2.3/2.3), the camber seems to help me and the softer damping seems to find more grip for me too, however the YB's handling still changes with the weather im sure....

New T's....(all quicker than previous)

T1 - 48.083
T2 - 1'24.975
T3 - 1'55.446
T4 - 2'50.536
T5 - 3'31.140
T6 - 3'59.287
T7 - 4'52.399
T8 - 5'37.927
T9 - 6'01.677
T10 - 6'47.097 (-3.2s)

-3.9 seconds total on my previous best lap and it was clean!!

Watching the replay the Ruf seems to be shredding its tyres on every corner which im sure is down to my driving...but hey its quicker than previous so it will do!👍

Hope to see a few submissions for this final challenge, @Appie17, sure its fine just to submit a hotlap:tup: @ bigrew, welcome back:tup:

cheers all

David

I haven't taken down my splits yet, usually because by the time I get a good clean lap I just need to get away from the machine.

Hotlap: T10: 6'39.xxx

I haven't had a clean race yet, but at least I've found a line-up I can clear.

Viper GTS
Merc SL600
BMW M5
Zonda C12S
A/C Cars 427

I could overtake the BMW, Zonda and the A/C on the first left of Flugplatz at the top of the hill; the Merc I could usually knock off before the little jump just before Schwedenkreuz, or else just after Aremburg at T2. That left the Viper. If I'm lucky I can take him before Metzgesfeld, or I have to wait until coming out of the hairpin at Wehrseifen.

As I said, I haven't had a clean race yet. Done quite a few with no ai touches but I just keep throwing it off the road. :dunce: My best first lap so far is a 7'41.

Good luck everyone.

Great split there VT:tup: Shows whats possible if you can get the front and back working to slide together....

Im getting nowhere with the AI race, too many restarts the frustration starts to creep in...Im finding also that just as you get to predict where the ai will be at a certain time on track, if you shut down and have another go later the same line up will behave differently! Makes it interesting to say the least.

regards

Dave

welp... between finals week and my trip to seattle (This should look familiar to everyone: ) I didn't have any time to touch the bird until today.

got one easy clean lap and am about 10 seconds off pace... so I doubt i'll be in the podium race. Since i'll probably only get one more quick stint to rip out the hotlap AND the 2 lapper.
Heh, When I first sat down I was cursing the car's brakes and having horrible problems with entry understeer; then I thought back to the many hours I spent playing porsche unleashed on the PC years ago... Then proceeded to smack myself in the head for disobeying the first rule of porsche driving ettiquite: "thou shalt not trail brake"
So, if anyone is having problems on turn-in, i'll pass on this wisdom. Do all of your braking BEFORE you touch the steering wheel. Then lift, turn in, the back will start to rotate, then you can throttle steer through the corner and be on your way with much style and speed.
Fun++

Well, I finally got some clean times that I'm reasonably satisfied with. I know that there is so much time to be found out there if only I could drive the perfect lines every time. But that's not going to happen, so I'll just have to make do with what I've got. :indiff:

Hotlap:

T1: 0'47.223 (seen 46.7)
T2: 1'23.392
T3: 1'52.711 (seen 1'52.1, then I :yuck:'d )
T4: 2'46.105
T5: 3'25.538
T6: 3'52.819
T7: 4'45.190
T8: 5'30.470
T9: 5'53.157
T10: 6'38.759

Race:

Lap 1: 7'47.823
T10 lap 2: 6'47.094

I hope everyone submits, like I'm just about to. 👍

Eeep... :(

I still havn't got a clean time!! :(

Well ive submitted again, and hopefully, i'll be able to twist Dave's arm to let me get the new hotlap time in, and also add the family cup time that i managed last week in a hurry, and havent beaten since.
Typical :grumpy:
Try as i might, it wasnt happening in the family cup stakes today, and although i bettered my hotlap time, i havent been able to keep it on the black stuff for the 2 lapper.
Good luck to everyone running, and well done to all in this race, someone please keep the race series going, we need to run the ring in a multitude of cars yet!

Just for anyone who's interested, i made a note of my new

T10: 6'40.2something on the hotlap, so i know VT is ahead, thats pretty amazing stuff there VT, well done.

Dave, im perplexed as to why you cant get past the AI quicker, maybe you'll have hooked it up by this evening, eh?

Good luck to all anyway, im off to drive the Bird into as many walls as possible now, just cos i can, and i'll hope to see you all after the results are posted!!

Bon Chance:

Argh! Out of time!

No clean lap, although I was using a DS2, meh, still no excuse.

Bad driving, very bad :(

But you don't know how careful I was coming into Tiergarten to finish the lap. There's a second or two there at least. If your finish is better it could be very close indeed.

Did anyone remind holl01 to submit?

No, and I'm glad too.

He he :trouble:

I'd have lost my place in the running, and Dave wouldve been knocked off the podium!

No offense Holl.
We all bow to your skills in a waynes world stylee.

I spoke to holl01 and he said he never had a clean lap, despite being quicker than I was to T10.

So to everyone who finished a clean lap and managed to submit, you did better than one of the resident GTP aliens! :dopey:
