I've had a quick go at this, looks like I'm out of practise:

T10: 6'00.xxx (I'll get all the splits tomorrow)

I can see probably 2 seconds relatively easily but any more will be very difficult for me.

yeah, apparently my lap from the begining of the week was pretty good.
i attacked it today for 2 hours and only beat it by 1 second.
i think 5'57-ish is about as good as it gets.

g/l VTR ... i submitted my time already.

Didn't manage to run all week at The Ring; side tracked with 'boyfriend entertaining' (films) and this weeks' WRS combo. I've got plenty of time today, though, so I'm hoping to complete a few laps.

I did some last week and got times similar to yours Goix', I believe, so let's see if I've gone rusty or can still give you a little challenge.

Let me know about Toca3, too 👍

You made movies of yourself "entertaining" your boyfriend? Hmmm? Please forgive my twisted inappropriate stoopid sense of humor.

Relative to Toca3. The demo is quite limited (3 laps max in 3 or 4 cars on 3 or 4 different tracks) but I enjoyed it immensely especially the 2nd & 3rd go around. Initially I used the defaults which results in a bit "arcadish" game play, IMO. But then I went for the "pro-simulation" and couldn't keep the car on the track. Then I tried just turning on the "multi-turn" (I think that's what they call it) which enabled the DFP 900 degree rotation and found it to be challenging but not impossible. All this on "normal" difficulty. In Toca2 I could set the AI where I could not beat them...which makes for fun gameplay compared to almost all other racing games (the ones I've played). It appears that those selections are still available in Toca3. But the physics seems much different...you can turn on sand traps in "pro-simulation" and you almost can't get out of them. This game is going to have a serious flavor of realism that other games do not. Realistic driving, damage (that limits car performance), penalties for rough driving, etc. Not for the faint of heart (if you use "pro-simulation" and the DFP) but it seems that if you want to play bumper cars (like you can in GT4) you can make it so. This seems like a strong improvement over Toca2 and I can't wait to get my hands on the full version, which is now less than a month away. I've read that the PS2 version is better than the original XBOX version for gameplay (I think because of force feedback). Codemasters themselves don't know if the game will even play on the 360. I receved an e-mail from codemasters indicating they would have mirrors in the final game (not in the demo). I played the PC version of Toca2 and a patch came out over a year ago that added mirrors into that so I don't know what the big deal is? Now if you could just "personalize" your car.

I expect I will all but dissapear from gtp and GT4 for a long time.

EDIT: Your killing me Koly...when do we get to see your splits? Now that there's a shark back in the water I guess I'm just going to have to swim faster?

Nah, this shark has lost her teeth .. been away from the track too long and too late in the week ... I'm way off your pace, don't worry.

I shouldn't give you tips or anything (because you're better than I am...I should take tips from you) but try Dr Watson's settings...especially the tranny it really helps with the top end. His settings improved my time by almost 1.8 secs @ T10 and over 2.3 secs on final lap time.

Why am I telling you this? Never mind....

I have his settings, but I found the tranny labored and never hit the top end of 6th gear ... ever. I've tried shortening it slightly.

6'11 after 3 laps ... sub 6'10 is easy enough, but there were 2 iffy sections where I lost time, but much more than that will take more time than I perhaps have. I'll give it another half an hour or so and see if I can pull something magical out of my ass :p

At this HP level on this car I don't think you hit top end of 6th gear?

Because administering the series has reduced my driving sessions I stopped using MT. My best times were coming with both hands on the wheel using AT...my MT driving technique is one hand on the wheel, one on the shifter. Because sometimes with MT and both hands on the wheel it can be a bit of a problem shifting with my arms all knotted up. I just haven't learned an intermediate style in between the two yet.

I guess what I'm saying is AT isn't so bad? Maybe try that? Unless you've mastered two-handed MT driving.

I can't 'do' AT ... it kills me .. something about it throws off my entire driving style.

I think I must have setup his transmission settings all wrong, because I followed his instructions again and saved time (YAY!) but I got bored of the combo (BOO!) and wanted to do something else for a slight break. I might dig it out again later.

you're not supposed to hit the top end of the tach, silly... :p
the engine is useless over 6500 rpm.
ignore the shift light and change gears at 6500.

and i would NOT recomend an AT in this car.
the Automatic will be running the revs way too high and throwing tons of time out the window as the engine lags on the top end.

if anyone wants a ghost to chase, feel free to pm me.
(NTSC NA of course)

Time submitted.

Only had one real session with this car, a whole 189 km.

My splits:

T1: 0'42.244
T2: 1'14.969
T3: 1'42.156
T4: 2'29.932
T5: 3'06.862
T6: 3'33.902
T7: 4'21.199
T8: 5'00.291
T9: 5'21.241
T10 6'00.342

Hopefully only a few seconds off the pace, oh well. Good luck everyone. 👍

[EDIT]: I've just noticed I lost 0.7 to Dr W between T8 and T9, damn my conservative streak.

I developed my one-handed MT driving style because of tight corners such as Suzuka's hairpin. To be consistent I used it everywhere. Then at the Nurb I felt I needed the precise control resulting from two hands on-the-wheel so I switched to AT. I was also missing shift points occassionally and thought the AT would cure that too. Sure enough my times improved.

After reading Dr Watson's latest post I decised to give the ASL one last go using MT (and my one-handed driving style). Somehow I wound up with both hands on the wheel and after about 4 laps had a T10 = 6'08.815 (+1.237 - a little slower than my best AT time). I was surprised that you can keep both hands on the wheel and not get your arms all knotted up. I really thought that the corners just before T4 (Wehrseifen?) would require one hand on the wheel or having your arms all twisted up if done two-handed.

So I was wrong WRONG WRONG:dunce: about MT & two-handed driving on this track. It can be done and rather easily. With additional time I **think** I could match my best AT time but I'm not sure if I could actually improve upon it. IMO AT & MT are nearly equal...at least with this car on this track with this driver (hopefully that statement has been properly "qualified"). It seems that maybe AT up-shifts at a more optimum RPM but maybe not so much relative to down-shifting...it seemed that sometimes the car was bogged down in a gear that might have been a smidge too high.

I think in the Falken I'll use AT to find the best up-shift point (apparently it isn't always at the redline?). And then switch to MT.

I have an afternoon business appointment so I'll be leaving the office at 3:30pm US EST which means I will likely not get results posted until possibly 8 or 9pm tonight. Sorry about the inconvenience. Damn work & family getting in the way of GT4...I don't know who they think they are...

9pm GMT is 4pm US EST which is inconvenient as I knock off work at 5pm...then drive home...then eat dinner and spend some time with the family = 8pm +/-. Sometimes (last week) it's not be a problem but sometimes it will be (this week). Sundays would be a much better day for me to deal with all this or maybe I should just wait and not try to get results up until later on Mondays. Any thoughts?

you don't use the shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel?
As far as the ring goes, i never take a hand off the wheel and drive @ 3 and 9 o'clock... the ring doesn't have any corners that requre more than 180° of input. so i'm not sure how you're getting your arms twisted up.
perhaps you're turning the wheel too far?

Ive had a few more laps at this, and im pleased with what i got.

I tried Watson's gearbox, but found it sluggish compared to my own.

No offense Dr, it just didnt work for me!

Anyway, im not sure of the exact split, but i know it started:

T10: 5'57.something

Good luck everyone, i hope to keep seeing you soon!

Because of my ignorance / stupidity I ASSUMED Wehrseifen was a corner that would twist your arms up like Suzukas hairpin (with both hands on the wheel). I have realized the error of my ways...that on the 'Ring your hands never need come off the wheel. So now I'm able to use MT and the "F1" style wheel mounted shift buttons.

BTW thanks for posting your settings nice work with the tranny 👍 . Usually I just adjust the "auto" setting to accomodate top end on the longest straight. How do you know how to tune the tranny...figure out where the sweet spot is relative to final drive/auto gear settings? Trial & error or is there some "formula" or what? I tried the "tranny trick" and did some testing at Test Course but couldn't find settings that produced the results that your setting did.

I turn the car around at the start of a session, go backwards down the straight, then turn around at the mini karussell and head back, watching for peax in the cars power thru the gears and the top speed attained along with the amount of revs left to go.

Then i go to the transmission settings, look at the number value for the 6th or 5th gear depending on car, and use this value as a final point for the gearbox.

If i want quicker changes and more grunt, then i shrink everything using the auto slider until the 6th gear still retains its value, but all other gears are closer to it, or i lengthen it if i need longer gears or fewer changes until 5th or even 4th is at the value matching the original value of the top gear in the first place.

Once i have decided which gives a better top speed for the car at the ring (which is very important-lots of high speed sections of course) i tune and test and tune and test until i have a good setup for the tricky sections and the best top speed i can attain.

If you want an example, pm me.

For the arta, i lengthened the gears as they gave a greater top speed this way, then upped the final drive ratio so that the car "got there" faster.

Its a balancing act Goix, and only time and trial and error will give the best results and teach you the basics through time.

well... to answer your questions about the gearing.
its the same with all of my car setups.
i've been playing gt games and OLR time competitions since the initial release of GT1. (me and a close friend helped andy build racing-line in the GT2 days before it was subsequently sold some years later and completely destroyed by the new owners)
well, through the years and experience i've developed some "slap-on" settings that i've just committed to memory. Suspensions and such that work for FR, MR, FF, etc.. as well as gearing for turbo, NA, high displacement, or high revving etc...
historically the GT300 cars are a specific animal (probably has something to do with the restrictors on the engines that causes them to have such a cliff of a power band), they've always been responsive to short-shifting and high final with long ratios.
as a general rule, 4.10 is nice for high-final boosted cars.
NA V8's like 3.83 as a mid-range
or 2.73 for low final cars with short ratios

once i have the final drive setup, i just tinker with the auto setting until i'm happy with the top-gear... then fiddle with the individual gearing to adjust for specific corners.
like if you find yourself in the wippermann to pflanzgarten section constantly switching between 3rd and 4th... either make 3rd a bit longer or shorter so you're either using the top of 3rd more or the bottom of 4th.

:( crap, I really wanted to do this one... I dont think im gonna get a chance to get a run at it.:(

i think we're the only two people on this forum that know where bloomfield is. ;)
(one of my professors @ RIT lives there.)

just saw the results are up...
nicely done Vexed. 👍

guess my thoughts that 6'43 was the target this week were correct.

NTSC NA replay below:

6 competitors hardly seems worth continuing now....good results though to all.

The results are finally posted. Rather frustrating trying to edit things in. On my computer the jpegs looked horrible so after much tinkering I've opted for a word document. I hope everybody can view the attachment. Please let me know if it's a problem and I'll try to figure something else out.

I wish more folks were competing. Does anybody have any thoughts on what might bring people in or back? Anything I'm doing wrong or could do differently / better?

I feel like I've let you down Dave. It's obvious I don't have your charisma nor the flair or creativity with the threads. I guess I suffer from being a practical engineer type without much skill in the "artistic" department.

Well, I guess I'll go Falken in Germany.

Not to worry. I just didn't have the time, last week, and the ASL didn't grab my attention so much. I'm still in for the long haul.

Not at all Ronny, maybe it was a quiet week because of the car??

Will drop you a pm this afternoon mate

Happy with my result again, not quite sure how you quick guys manage the times you do but what i did realise is just how much you could lean on this car in the corners, maybe its a characteristic of the race tyres perhaps, having faith that the car would stick took some doing but ultimatly thats what got my lap time, overall the lap was scruffy and no doubt could have been quicker but the tyres just took some adjusting to for me.
