I've had this video in my collection for a while and know that its a hard one to find on the web, so I thought it was about time I put it up on youtube.

While the commentary is in German (and I have not got a clue what is being said), the driving is quite outstanding.

It starts with some nice dry weather driving around the 'ring but quickly moves to full on snow treatment and quite simply is one of the finest demonstrations of car control I have ever seen

Enjoy

Man, that's wild. Very smooth, very well placed.

When they were describing the Carrera, he mentioned something about the traction control. Can anyone further inform us on these details?

Good video. Thanks for sharing!

That’s some serious skill – very cool indeed.

I've had this on my harddrive for a long time, too. Great fun to watch.

Awesome.

Is this a 2 or 4 wheel drive Porsche?

It's an ordinary base-model Carrera.

I've had this vid for about 3 years now and I watch it every 3 or 4 months because it's such a great display of skill 👍

After watching that I realized That I have been DRIFTING since 1990. I will now refer to it as drifting in Colorado Style! Although It was never on a track like this but who can't resist kicking it sideways in the snow. Besides that I would have never learned how to replace that axl if I hadn't drifted myself right into that darn curb!

Reminds me of how my dad drives in the winter, but then not with a Porsche but a '92 Legacy :D

Ok I am in university atm without earphones, so no sound for me ;).

I actually saw that as it got aired for the first time by the German sports tv channel DSF. The german car magazine (print media) "Sport Auto" ( they test their cars on the Nuerburgring > called the Supertest ) produced Sport Auto TV and this was in one of their episodes.

The driver is called Tim Schrick, a talented car tester for several German car magazines on DSF.

The only thing that would make that more fun is if the D1GP announcers were commentating. Those guys' enthusiasm is contagious.

But, yeah, looks like fun.

Two things : He says that the traction control can be turned off and later he talks about the PSM : he says that sometimes that system helps to adjust certain braking forces, but that doesn't affect the switched off traction control. They like it : little help without killing the fun

It is alright a 4WD...From what I can see, the front wheels are spinning as well when he takes off and you see how he slides in the beginning, all that power isn't coming from the rear.

No it is a regular 320 hp Porsche Carrera with RWD... look how slow the car accelerates, I have 4WD and it goes much faster with it...

ooooooooooooooo. that thing is pretty crazy. drives like theres nothing under its tyres almost...

They need to put that in GT. A snowy Nurburgring. How awsome would that be?

Before GT4 was released and the early details of a 'Nur-snow' track was leaked thats exactly what I had my fingers crossed for. In my opinion the closest we currently have in any game is the Wintertraum track in Enthusia.

Any way, thanks for all the feedback and glad you like it as much as I do.

What are you driving, an STI? Off course you're going faster

Sorry if I was wrong but every time my dad hits the gas on snow, he slides in the very same way and accelerates slow as well. I can't imagine how you could do 0-60 mph in 5 seconds with your STI in snow....

Well, you have to make a difference between "absolutly" fast and "relativly" fast.

Of course you accerlerate much slower on snow than on dry tarmac. But I think we aggree that AWD is an advantage in snow. So a Carrera 4S would beat that regular Carrera. And my STi would beat that Carrera in snow asweell, I mean no miracle right ? That is not the question however.

It is a regular Carrera with RWD beacue you can see it and because they say it ;)...
Just for the record, of course my car isn't as stable in snow as on dry tramac, but you become very fast in a very short time, which can mean a huge problem because AWD cars don't break faster ;)
I noticed that every time I drift in snow. It takes a lot of risk and speed to get decent drift angels with the sti compared to a RWD BMW for example.
Of course the STi can be controlled perfectly, but still a power drift in a corner means acceleration in my STi, whereas the same powerdrift in RWD BMW means just angle without really becoming faster....

Yeah, he pointed out that the Traction Control is switch-able, and that it was turned off, but that the braking-aids were on, to help stabilize the car. Quoting (And Translating): "As soon as you got off the brakes, you had everything back in under your control"

Apart from those German metaphors ("Porsche Nine-Eleven and Nurburgring are like Tar and Sulfur" or "The Karussel reminds the driver that he's not on a road, but in the Grüne Hölle"), it was very fun to watch. First time ever for me to watch snow-driving (Except that TopGear episode with the Bobsleigh).

I thought it was interresting that he dropped in the Karussel, many amateur drivers avoid it to avoid getting tossed into the armco on the outside (I know this fella isn't amateur, but I'm pretty sure he had to take about as much caution as a first-timer). Not only did he drop in, he kept it so planted the whole length.

Tim Schrick is very skilled ... drifting on any surface is what he does best...
