Nurburgring Woes

The reason the track is so hard is because there are so many different technical sections and so much reaction and perfect driving is involved in running it properly.

I just ran a 6:52 with the TVR Cerbera Speed 12, which in my opinion is pretty nuts. I could probably get it down to 6:30 if I tried hard enough because I messed up a little bit a couple times and I didnt go "full out" because I dont know the track that well and didnt want to go flying off into the grass.

For those saying take a slow car and learn it, I took my Kubelwagen out for a spin on it.

Lap Time - 17:01:765.

Didn't have to touch the breaks once and it is incredibly frustrating going up a hill and watching your speed drop from 50 to 20mph.

haha! wow
at that rate with the KW one could probably waltz off to the kitchen, make a cup of tea, drink said cup of tea, and return to finish lap without losing any time!

A sub 17 minute lap is possible, I took my foot off the accelerator up the first hill because I thought it was broke, wondered why I was loosing speed.

I absolutely love Nürburgring, and want my ashes scattered there once I'm gone.

Just keep doing the track. Don't use the driving line because it's about as useless as a one legged cat trying to bury a turd in a frozen lake.

Don't worry about slipping off; just get back on track and keep going.

Do the AMG events, A LOT. Seriously.

I felt the way that you did. I wanted to learn this track back in GT4 but it just seemed like a completely daunting task, I wasn't prepared for it. When I found out that all golds on the beginner AMG tests unlocked the winter photo travel location, I decided I was going to make it happen.

Getting golds on any of these tests is incredibly challenging if you're unfamiliar with the track, but that ends up working for you. You'll be forced to repeat the individual sections over and over and will just naturally begin to memorize the corners in pursuit of that gold. Once you work your way up to the full lap you'll be surprised how much more comfortable you are with the track.

One thing important about driving the ring is that you need to STAY FOCUSSED. Almost all of my disasters on the ring come from me spacing out for a moment and losing track of where I am. It really mostly happens to me on one corner now that I think about it. After the second low speed left corner in the second section, the one in front of the hotel, there's a high speed section followed by a really mean blind, uphill decreasing radius right hand corner. There have been a lot of times where I spaced out and forgot about the corner entirely, thinking right after the hotel corner I was just in the high speed section headed back towards carousel area...

TL;DR:

Gold all the beginner AMG events at the very least. You will learn the track in the process, when it comes time for the full lap you'll surprise yourself at how much you learned.

It's worth the effort because once this track starts to make sense it's incredibly fun and rewarding :)

Exactly. Now that I'm familiar with the track, I think it flows better than any others in the game. Nürburgring, in it's entirety, just feels right.

I learned my way around Cape Ring (all versions) in about 5 laps. Monza took 3 laps to get down, but I've done hundreds of laps of the Nurburgring and I have no idea what I'm doing

Remember Monza is a Formula 1 track with wide stretches of road and huge run-off areas as well as only 8 (3 proper) corners vs Nordschleife that has 73 (official) challenging corners to master + no run-off areas etc etc...thats basically the same as mastering 10 different tracks at once...

I've done over 1000 laps on nordschleife in gt5 and 6 in real life and still have not "mastered" the track...once you stop crashing you get down to the splits...its a never ending battle!!! Like everyone is saying, take it sector for sector and get good reference points for your braking zones

I have only played this track on GT5, about 5 times, I know every corner

5 times...erhm...doubt it, also there is a difference between "knowing" corners and not crashing when driving through them...not even the greats like Sir Jackie Steward could do that...so thats makes you one exceptional driver:crazy:

Anybody know if 6:50 with my Speed 12 is a good time?

It's not a bad time though what BHP and Weight do you have and was that on racing tyres.

As a comparison I can get an R35 GTR with 580hp weighing 1740kgs on sports soft tyres round the ring in 7:07 seconds.

Let's face it the Speed 12 is not the best handling car to drive round the ring lol, certainly makes a good noise though, only driven mine their once.

The only comparison i could give is my Mclaren F1 road car running 850bhp on racing tyres and that goes round in the mid 6.20's.

Thank you so much for all the great advice. Tonight I will watch the videos, which should get me eager to get this course down.

When going for gold on these challenges, should I do them all aids off ABS=1?

This is how I drive all my A-Spec stuff, so it makes sense.

100% Mistake free i love this track and have done countless laps but i still make errors here and there, maybe i have one good lap but not every time, can i go down the ring 100% error free every time no, sorry to be a little sceptical on this

I meant that I can push at 100% and be mistake free.

Nonsense. Once you learn it Nurburgring has more flow than any other track in the game. Perhaps in the world?

Once I got a basic idea, the video of Hans Stuck's record lap helped me tremendously. It includes commentary on how to take specific turns, and his lines are perfect throughout the entire track.

Nordschleife starts at 3:15:

Awesome video! I never saw that, thanks. I see some spots where I need to try to go flat out.

I love this track in this game (when im older, i would love a drive round the track in real life). Try a four wheel drive car maybe a subaru or gtr, something like that. Then, try this track at night time, its immense.

I just want to chime in here as the Nordschleife has become something I think about a lot lately. I am very new to the GT series. I have been playing since Nov 24. I have never played any of them prior to GT5.
I am a bit of petrol-head. I watch Top Gear religiously. I love cars. I drive a BMW. So, I knew about the Green Hell before. But I never tried to drive it. The first AMG Academy events were daunting. I think I initially settled for bronze with a few silvers. Then, honestly, after doing the Lupo Cup I fell in love with the Ring (and with that little car, honestly). Yes, it is wildly difficult, but so is great music. It is wildly difficult to design the BMW M3. But when it is done... oh my what a reward. The Nürburgring is analogous to the High Speed Ring in the way that Bach is to Led Zeppelin. I love both, but for different reasons.
That analogy may be stretching it a bit. A bit. But you see my point. If this track really had no rhythm, or nor driveable structure, no one would have heard of it, and certainly it would not garner such visceral emotion from such a large group.
Now that I am higher in level (A-spec 26), I find myself on this track every night. I try different cars, but I think someone earlier said, the DTC 1 lap in Extreme is my favorite. I love those cars (I use the BMW M3 GTR Race Car), and the speed is just right. I am usually feeling that edge of control. That thrill. That fear. Those sweaty palms. What a rush.
Definitely worth the investment for me (I bought a PS3 and a wheel simply so I could play this).
Keep at it. I think with everyone's comments here you will eventually learn to love this course like the others among us do.
Nice post. Really got a good conversation going.

Fact is: If you want to "know" the Ring you need to do a minimum of 100 laps.

If you want to master the Ring and want to make laps with 99% of time driving clean and no accidents, you will have to make 1000 laps.

There is still the last 1% of failure then - Making mistakes on a hard run, losing concentration, etc.

I've done around 200 laps in GT4/GT5 and around 1000 on NFS Shift on the Ring but i still make mistakes sometimes.

Driving 1000 laps doesnt make you perfect, but its a good way to being good and drive competitive online with a chance to win.

Btw: Greets to PSN Fred_ze_Bird: Very good Ring knower :>

And btw2: The Ring IS THE best track in the world period.

I detest every second I spend on this track. Am I alone?

Which leads me to my plea, help me see the light, what am I doing wrong?

I've been driving this thing since GT4 and I still have no idea where anything is, the track is really narrow, it's filled with corners that just throw me onto the grass and then it's all over. I spend more time crashing than I do in control, yet I managed to get all silvers in all of the special events for it.

I learned my way around Cape Ring (all versions) in about 5 laps. Monza took 3 laps to get down, but I've done hundreds of laps of the Nurburgring and I have no idea what I'm doing.

I'm thinking of taking a 100hp car around it until I can do a few laps without crashing then changing to one with 50 hp more. See if that helps.

Your Situation is very normal. Nurbergring is a track that extremely hard
to handle. Many real world pro driver also said this track is "Out of common sense" when compare to other road track.
So ,when you driving on this track, just forget what you've been learn from other , they're totally different.

I think you got a right idea, just starting form a low power car with a cheap low grip tire,
drive it easy to get comfort in it, let the whole track map burn on you brain,
then you can start to step deeper on the throttle , concentrate on the car motion, see what's the different when your speed being fast on every different kind of conner & every road section.

Note that the track surface are extremely complex , that's mean the weight distribution of the car are very unstable,
let say on a normal race track, most of the time you only need to think about the weight transfer on the front and rear , but on the ring, you must think it in 3-dimensional way.

To keep your car under control,
on normal track, you only need to think about the gas & brake to control the front-rear weight distribution of the car, but on the ring, you must think much more on the steering wheel, because you must control the left-right weight distribution at the same time, even on a straight road, so your hand must being more busy & sensitive.

And the last , keep practice with no fear~ then one day,you will fall in love with the ring deadly :)

This is how I drive all my A-Spec stuff, so it makes sense.

If you are using a wheel then definatly all aids off abs-1 it will take a little more comitment but it will be much faster and rewarding, aids only slow you down, in the long run if you have good car control you will do much better without them. good luck :)

Not all aids slow you down, skid recovery force (AKA the hand of god) will speed you up. Actually learning a track like Nurburgring is the one thing I think SRF is actually good for, turning SRF on while learning the track will make your car more forgiving, once you start to get a feel for the track you can turn SRF off and perfect your lap.

Should have mentioned, I drive with a wheel, everything off (ABS=1). I drive Street Cars on whatever tyres PD decided they should have, so usually Sport Hard, but I'll put Sport Soft on the crazy 500hp+ RWD cars if they try to kill me too often.

You also have to 'curb' your expectations and recognize technical limits based on your tire selection(s) above.

Some mods will help you quicken your laps.

I imagine the ring is like driving on the one lane old highway to the cottage/lake in the Laurentians (with no oncoming traffic thankfully!). Eventually you will know the way in your mind's eye.

The Lupo Cup race was some of the most fun ive had on GT5! The Nordschleife is a very special track and it feels great when you hook up a great lap. Ive still got a lot to learn, the AMG events are really really helpful with getting to know each sector. The problem when you first start driving it is that every corner looks the same, u cant tell your follow-thrus from your gambons. I'd say ive definitely learnt the track now, but im nowhere near mastering it!

One of the things you need to understand about the mighty Ring is that you essentially need to learn it again each time you take a different car to it, much more so than any other track.
It's not a random collection of corners but there's a pattern and flow you'll eventually recognise after driving it time and time again.
I've probably spend more time there in GT4 than is considered healthy and learned the track over time and yes I love it.
But never make the mistake to claim you know the Nürburgring Nordschleife, when you're confidently in "the zone" or casually flick a car around on "autopilot" it will bite you by revealing a new element (bump, angle, etc.) you thought wasn't there before.
It therefore demands full concentration and a careful measured control of your car but when you finally nail it, it's very rewarding (and then you crash in the next corner for mistakenly feeling smug about "knowing" the Ring....;)).

Best track in the game!!!

On the beginning drive it with line on.
Then, when you have a good idea of the track, you can do it like me, and find different driving lines watching ring movies... 👍

this is an awesome example, 2010 WRX STI 7.55 lap time.
Makinen is really fast:

cheers

I tend to grip the wheel too hard and I get tired at spots on lap 2. That momentary distraction of feeling hand fatigue has often caused me to crash.

When I feel stressed I tend to grip hard.

For me, is the Nürburgring the Best track in GT5.
Here i test the Handling of the cars, cornering speeds and Downforce.

ps: for Speed is surely the SSR7

That's how I drive around Nürburgring. I'm a little faster, obviously ;)

It the Green Hell. Just do the AMG event and you should be fine within a matter of hours. Repeating each sector one by one to get gold should help a lot.

This track is awesome.

Yeah, I did this, and did fairly well on the AMG event. Then a few days ago my buddy asked if I wanted to borrow his NASCAR to run the Seasonal on the Nurburgring before it expired...

Sure, why not?

I really had trouble with the NASCAR. It was okay at first, but the longer I drove it, the more mistakes I made. I ended up getting as high as 9th, then I gave up.

I love this track more than anything else. Best of all I live fairly close to it and i'm going to sit next to my brother in law driving a lap in a tuned Mustang GT-350 '67, probably in a month or two when the weather is better. 👍

I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!
