Does anyone know what all the writting on the Nurburgring is for, is it placed there by fans, like in the tour de france?

Thanks very much I thought it would be something like that, people don't do that at the Isle of Mann TT though.

im not 100 per cent on this but i think its all the people who have died over the years on the track
Thats a misconception, but there probably are some such messages. Some people mark where they've gone off the track and hit the barriers.

As far as I know it is as the OP said, a lot of it is done by fans during VLN and 24hr races and I believe bike (pedal) races too.

I noticed last night that there is different writing on the track (on certain sections) in the 24hr track layout, compared to the traditional Nordschleife track layout... :odd:

I'm not 100% sure but I think I notice different banner in the Suzuka 1000km race.
In the Hairpin I think there's a banner that's not here usually.

The graffiti on the 'Ring is mostly done by fans. Some are made by those who drove the 'Ring for various reasons as well.

Therefore, there are all kinds of massages. From declarations of love to massages of hate towards a certain manufacturer and quite a bit of profanity, which, of course, isn't in GT5.
Due to the nature of the graffiti, it's constantly changing, of course.
