To freight48,

Please stop embarrassing Canada and think about your question logically.

So I ask a game related question and you find a way to insult others ? Funny that everytime the region is mentionned, someone finds a way to say something like that.

Have you fail the writen comprehension class too with Shinzah ? You're taking my question out of context and OUT OF THE GAME actually. My question was game related and you find a way to insult me outside of it, nice going.

Thanks Will27, I find your explanation useful and if it was a way to make fun of me, so be it, if not, seriously, that helps thanks again, because my question was to explain how I felt about the license tests and special events, because I was getting hit from behind by cars I couldn't/can't judge properly (distance) and getting disqualified (overtaking too aggressively), but a lot of people are brainwashed by the "real driving simulator" tag on the GT game and take everything out of it (game) and act like it's the real world, because they have a fancy steering and seat.

This discussion could have ended nicely with a nice and clear explanation, that it's not because of graphics, resolution or bad programming, but just because the way the "game camera" is placed on the car. Now I know and quite frankly, I'll refrain from asking any more question. That was my first and last one. I was expecting better things from this site, but I was wrong.

Thanks again Will27

Right. And taking Shinzah and my understand of the English language is somehow better right?

Cars in the mirror are closer (in reality, or if you hit L1) than they appear (in the mirror).
This is true in real life, and exactly what you're describing.

For some reason, you're interpreting the phrase as:
Cars in the mirror are closer (in the mirror) than they appear (in reality or if you hit L1).
...which doesn't make sense. A car can not "be closer" in the mirror and "appear farther" in reality. The car doesn't exist in the mirror, it exists in reality.

Please think about it and understand what's being said to you. :)

Edit: Oddly, the phrase itself is a little screwy considering it says "cars in mirror". Try to interpret it as "Cars which are visible in the mirror are actually closer than the mirror shows."

What country do you drive in? I know for sure cars around here have mirrors that show cars in the back are CLOSER than they really are, which is good for safety reasons. To make it more clear, I look in the mirror and it seems the car behind me is really close, but when I look back, it's certainly far enough for me to even make a lane change.

Reading this whole thread is quiet confusing, but in the game, the rear/side view mirrors do actually work the opposite as they do in real life.

This is not possible with the laws of light refraction (which is how reflections are created).

I might not understand english apparently, but basic physics apply. Things in mirrors will, and always have been, further away in the mirror then they will be when looking at them.

Edit: I've known some interior decorators in my life, and a simple test is to put a lot of mirrors in the room. If mirrors made things bigger, the room would appear smaller. Mirrors create an illusion of space, and that is why the camera code for the mirrors is located more in front of the mirrors, as games do not percieve refraction in a way that we do.

Hi all :) I'm not bothered by the distance in mirror issue, but I've noticed there's no
shadow under the car when you look in the rear view mirror (GT/bumper cam)

Is it me of the cars in the rear view mirror look like they are a thousand miles away and when you press L1, they are just behind you ? Aren't they suppose to be closer than they appear ?

It's even more tricky when there's a fast car behind you...

Ok, on the off chance that this guy returns to this thread I'll lay it out for you nice and easy. "Objects are closer than they appear." Which translates to: They look far away but are actualy close. So as you pointed out, any car will look small in the mirror until you hit L1. L1 is the equivelent of turning your head and seeing the true distance. PD did nothing wrong. It's just like you always heard it would be.

"Aren't they suppose to be closer than they appear ?"
- They are. Remeber the saying is NOT - Objects appear close but are actualy far away.
"Is it me of the cars in the rear view mirror look like they are a thousand miles away"
- You said it yourself. They don't look close, but they really are.

As many have already posted, think it through bud.

PS - The VW mirror thing is hysterical!

Wasnt having a go or anything, I just usually suck at explaining things, so I did a diagram.:)

dylansan got it absolutely right in terms of the side rearview mirrors. The warning "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" means that actual cars are closer to you than they seem to be from the image in the mirror. For example, if you look at just the mirror, a car may seem to be 10 feet behind you, when in reality, that car may actually only 5 feet behind you (fuzzy math here, but it's hard without equations and actual radius of curvature measurements :)).

In the US, the passenger side mirror is a convex mirror, which means that it curves slightly outward. This distorts the depth perception, but does give a wider range of vision. The rational for using convex mirrors is to help minimize blind spots. Europe uses convex mirrors on both driver and passenger side mirrors, but in the US, only the passenger side mirror is convex.

It's because you chose to insult Shinzah's reading comprehension when it's actually you that's consistently and repeatedly failing to understand what other people, and you, are posting.

Of course objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. Now, read this closely: How come cars, in the rear view mirror are FARTHER in the rear view mirror compared to looking behind you with the L1 button.

Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a writing, something you lack, apparently.

Re-read the first paragraph of this quote, since you've described it correctly but didn't understand.

"Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear." This is perhaps clearer as "Objects are closer than they appear in the mirror." When you look at the object directly - for example by 'looking over your shoulder' with R1 - you see the object at its actual distance. When you look at it in the rear view mirror it appears to be further away.

Will78's explanation is interesting, and may be a factor in why the effect seems a little exaggerated, but this is a general real world effect of mirrors, especially convex ones, which the game replicates.

Hopefully this helps clarify it a little.

I've always found it amusing that there are countries where they put a description on the mirror how it works. Now I'm baffled that it seems to be not only really necessary but also will go straight over some people's heads...

Um dude, "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" is the principle. A principle as consistant as gravity. Look small in mirror, look bigger looking yourself. Tah Dah.

Dang, you took my joke.
