I know of a few good ones (most of which are Christian Bands who actually make good music :eek:):

DC Talk - Ok, maybe they're not good now, but back in the day when I used to listen to them and follow them, they were good (their mose recent album, before they split up, was Jesus Freak. Most of the songs are pretty good...).

Audio Adrenaline - A series of records varying in volumes and sounds over the years has given them a favorite spot in my opinions. Their most recent album, called "Lift" is filled with older-style rock and a little bit of heavy stuff thrown in the mix (they even have an Old-School rap bit at the end which is cool).

Jars of Clay - Ok, you have to listen to these guys. Of all the music I've heard these guys come pretty close to taking the alternative rock trophy. One listen to any of their albums and you'll be hooked.

The Fall - The last one on my list, it's the band that I'm affiliated with. They're local, have virtually no money, and have yet to perform. I've been to a few of their practices (no vocals yet, I was gonna jump in but I couldn't think up any words off the top of my head). They're good, and currently I'm working on designing a computer background for them to "advertise" with.

If you want sample music from any of these bands, Email, PM, or IM me and I will try to send you a song or two (not illegal, 1 or two songs, in my opinion, is legal). Keep posting more bands...

Hi just want to clear up one thing first. The Hives is from Sweden, as T(i)NC.

Actually I used to work with the bassplayer in TiNC ,Inge, at my last work and he's one funny guy!

I think i'ts hard to describe music but bands that been mentioned here that i like is Built to spill, Cat Salsa exp, The hives, J Mascis to mention a few.

Rothko Three-bass outfit from the U.K. Stillness in sound. Astoundingly complex for something so sparse.

Autechre Possibly the most important band since Pink Floyd, though that's no guarantee of commercial success. Certainly the most experimental band since Floyd, or perhaps even ever. Radiohead's BIGGEST influence since Kid A. See also Gescom. For like-minded fun, try Squarepusher, Plaid and Funkstorung.

Fantomas One of several projects by Mike Patton, long-time-ago vocalist for Faith No More. His bands are usually extremely innovative, and his vocal style can range from whatever-you-want to you-name-it. Blazing. Check out Mr. Bungle as well.

Recoil "Solo" project by the one member of Depeche Mode with enough sense to pursue something else. Dark and cinematic, and largely overlooked.

Painkiller Power trio project from perennial Brooklyn weirdo John Zorn and his trademark alto sax. Hardcore ambient dub jazz featuring Mick Harris - the only drummer ever to officially hit a consistent minute's worth at 300bpm - and Bill Laswell, as well as some of the most astoundingly gorgeous and twisted cover art of all time. Diamanda Galas Old school uber-freak. No other comment. Find out for yourself.

David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir Not a band per se, however, they are an ensemble, so I'm including them. Adapting ancient Tibetan techniques to choral pieces, they sound absolutely alien to most people I know. They have the ability to actually sing chords, each voice producing three distinct notes, with astonishing register, which can be varied in pitch in relation to one another. With six actual voices or as little as just one, this has to be heard to be believed!

There's much more, maybe some other time.

Funny you mentioned that, because I actually met these guys backstage at some Christian festival at Darien Lake up here. One of the girls who came on the trip was a cousin of one of the guys. The last name's Lowell, if you're wondering.

Good sir, I'd like to add a counter-point (possible pun unintended). WhoTF is Nelly? (What is "mainstream" anyway? Current or since the dawn of time? I'm so much out of mainstream that I have no idea what's outside of it and what's in it.)

Atomic, re Ms Galas: Exactly. Ow. "Weird" doesn't begin to describe it. Not a fave, too odd.

Re Atomic, Blondie. Hardly obscure, no longer mainstream.

A random Kazaa find: Future Bible Heroes. Wide range of styles. Ballads, synth, rock...

Tanita Tikaram (at least around "Ancient Heart", will need to re-listen the newer works, of which there aren't too many). Hardly mainstream, last release five years ago.

Laibach to some extent.

Dead Can Dance. Modern medieval, sort of.

Moon Cakes. Tell me you've heard of them and I'm very surprised. They really deserve a break-thru, but haven't managed it yet. Oddly catchy remotely pop-ish melodies, instantly recognizable, and the vocalist sounds like her voice has been pitch-shifted.

All sorts of electronica; Software, Serge Blenner, whatever...

Now playing: Pizzicato Five. Is j-pop obscure?:) Frank Zappa isn't obscure, just slightly strange.
 
Frank Zappa is great. "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" is a masterpiece. He also has that one song about moving to Mid-western America to grow dental floss. I forgot the name, though...:confused:

Oh, Nelly is some ****ty pop-rapster that gets constant play on the radio and music television. You aren't missing anything by not knowing who he is. I envy you, in a way.

Mainstream is something that you'll hear on the radio all the time and that most nearly everyone knows about.
 
If you are not mainstream you may not even know about mainstream things. When I hear music on the radio it may as well all be the same band. I have no idea who it is, and it all sounds the same, mostly. There is the occasional good band that gets famous.

I just discovered an Industrial solo artist and he's awesome. I don't know if his music is serious or not, but either way he's hilarious. You can download all of his songs legally from his website.

Q and Not U - Super good band that only a few of my friends know about, they do a kinda wide rangeof music thats all really good. It's kinda punk-ish.

At The Drive In - Theyre kinda like Q and not U. Punkish music.

A Tribe Called Quest - Good old school rap that contains substance and thought unlike the stuff today.

Redneck Manifesto - Instrumental stuff thats really good. Go Listen...... NOW.



And you know what to get any kind of good music WATCH BMX VIDEOS. The music variety is always good, as well as the music.

another cool band that makes a very, very crude, bassless rock is Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. recomended.
and, OH YEAH! cant let this pass. Kynky. a VERY good mexican band who is experimenting a LOT with the electronic sound of rock. get some, really.

ill have to try out some of the bands people have listed, this type of music is all i really listen to these days. some of the bands ive found that i would recomment are:

Trapt - amost everyone knows of headstrong, but the album has alot more quality songs.

Blindside - caught a glimpse, Cute boring love. Both great songs.

Blindspot - nil by mouth, and lit up both great songs.

mindsnare - i fall, and at an end just two of their awesome songs.

AFI( a fire inside) - AWESOME band !! The leaving song pt 2, and also, This time imperfect are just 2 of their good songs.

Anthrax - Safe home.

Theory of a deadman - Nothing can come between us.

Thrice - awesome band....but i cant think of a song...havent listened to the album in a while...

Pulse ultra - They have a song on NFS hot persuit 2, sounded good so i downloaded the album... - Build your cages, Big brother are 2 good songs.

Death by stereo - wasted words

course of nature - wall of shame (another NFS hot persuit 2 band)

Static lullaby - favorite band for a long time, good songs are, Charred fields of snow, a sip of wine chased with cyanide, withered.

Those are jus a couple of the bands that i think are good, i have alot more of any1 is interested...tell me what U think of those.

BTW most or all of these are either punk/rock/thrash and stuff like that....

Pantera - Favorite band, Started late 80's-2000, thrash/metal
Down - Started 1994, rock/metal
Superjoint Ritual - Started 2002, hardcore punk/metal
 
The main band than comes to my mind that doesn't get the respect it deserves is SR-71 . They are an absolutely awesome band that has one of my favorite cds. Their first cd "Now You See Inside" is one of those that you can listen to every song on without ever skipping a track. They also have another cd that's relatively new that I'll either get for Christmas or buy afterwards, so I'll let you guys know how that one is. Now You See Inside is definately one I would pick to be stranded on an island with.
 
Life Of Agony - They're a nu-metal type band i guess. My ex-fav band stereomud split up and one of the members went to LOA

SubMotive - One of my friends band from high school. if you like punk/emo type music i highly recomend them. they are very good.
 
Keep up with me on this one, ok?

Mekong Delta - Great German Thrash/Classical band. Can be really weird sometimes.

Vio-lence - Crazy thrash metal band from S.F. Are known for playing quite fast.

Sodom - Psycho crazy Germans who play great thrash metal.

Helios Creed - Helios Creed's second band (after chrome), they play a "acid punk/ trippyish" kind of style of music. Really cool to hear.

Ok, since so many people suggested "They Might Be Giants" I downloaded 8 songs of theirs. It isn't my kind of music, a little silly like the barenaked ladies, or weird al yanchovic.

So far, I've only listened to Particle Man, which was stupid, and Your Racist Friend which reminds me of irish folk songs.

These guys are a joke. Over produced garbage. I am listening to Minimum Wage now. What is this crap?Nevermind, its only 47 seconds long.


Istanbul, sounded promising for the first 15 seconds. Now it is some ridiculous **** which I can't tell if its supposed to make me laugh or turn it off.

I won't even listen to the rest of the songs I downloaded.

If I wanted to laugh, I'd watch a funny movie or watch some stand-up. But music is not supposed to make you laugh.
 
You seriously don't like They Might Be Giants?! I think they're excellent. James K. Polk and Purple Toupee are their best songs, I honestly believe.

The Make-Up are a cool indie rock band who I just discovered. I highly recommend I Am Pentagon and White Belts from their newest album Save Yourself. Punk, psychedelia and every in between! Awesome!

If you don't get They Might Be Giants then you will not get them. Shows over folks, move on. You gave them a try, A for effort. That's better than most people would do.
