Just passed 50 hours, I was shocked to see it's been that many. I'm finding the amount of single-player content to be a wonderful surprise, it's actually overwhelming. There's so many ways to make money, but how long has it been this way? Is that why people were so mad at lauch? How much better is it now?

So... yes it is and quite a lot.

Really, the dam broke a bit when they introduced rewards for Circuit Experiences in 1.11 back in April 2022. That was almost 50m credits which quite a few people were just suddenly awarded having already got all-golds. That also added three new events which are favourites for grinding (WTC600 Tokyo, WTC700 Le Mans, WTC800 Sardegna).

Since then we got the other grind race (WTC800 Spa) in late April 2022, the weekly Online Time Trial rewards (2m for gold) in June 2022, and then with Weekly Challenges and car selling in Spec II in November 2023. There was also the introduction of Viewers Gift/Predict the Winners for the GTWS in November 2022, and the login bonus period over Christmas/New Year in December 2023.

I'm able to get a bronze on the Sport time trials, maybe a silver now and then. Are most of you able to get silver or gold?

Typically Bronze. In the 8% to 8.6% range. Occasionally Silver. Never Gold.

Here unless I’m reading it wrong
That means 6% behind the best time, not in the top 6% of drivers.

To figure out the latter, you need to know how many people compete and then do the division calculation. To know how many have competed, set a REALLY, REALLY slow lap time and wait until most people have tried it. Write down your place (or whoever is last). THEN come back and put in the fastest lap you can and note your new placing.

Here's a guy setting a slow lap time -
