Big news for Oculus. Looks like it has a better chance breaking out into other avenues much earlier.

I was going to order a DK2 but I reckon it will be worth the wait. Also with watch with interest how this all plays out with so many possible VR products.

Facebook. How weird ?

It's not so weird when you look at google amazon looking into robots and other similar tech. These companies have billions to spend and are looking for new growth and not to be a short lived stock that fades away.

I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire Oculus VR, the leader in virtual reality technology.
Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences.
This is where Oculus comes in. They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away. The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you're actually present in another place with other people. People who try it say it's different from anything they've ever experienced in their lives.
Oculus's mission is to enable you to experience the impossible. Their technology opens up the possibility of completely new kinds of experiences.
Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.
But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.
This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.
These are just some of the potential uses. By working with developers and partners across the industry, together we can build many more. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people.
Virtual reality was once the dream of science fiction. But the internet was also once a dream, and so were computers and smartphones. The future is coming and we have a chance to build it together. I can't wait to start working with the whole team at Oculus to bring this future to the world, and to unlock new worlds for all of us."

I should add that FB have bought a lot of mobile devs and software plus more well known stuff like Instagram and whatsapp. Palmer always said he see's VR being very big on mobile in a few years, where the processor is on you..

I see this as nothing but terrible news for hardcore gamers who were interested in OR and the people who invested in the early devs kits. This could be the funding VR needs to take off successfully into the mainstream market and Facebook would give it massive public coverage, but I cannot for the life of me see the OR continuing in it's original intended direction. I would be flabbergasted if Facebook gets involved or competitive with AAA gaming.

Sony meanwhile probably feel like they won the lottery here, they were thinking about supporting the PC and obviously their device is already running on them.

The uproar from the early investors is going to be interesting to watch. I see that game devs are already cancelling OR deals. Maybe I'm just being a negative nancy, but I don't think OR is going to be used for it's original intention at all with this purchase (and for $2b, sweet Jesus).

I expect Facebook will provide content/special offers/DLC/bonus features etc. to Oculus players who play while signed in to Facebook profile. They can then monetize the user database gathering profile records.

From reading Oculus fans posts there will be an exodus, they hate Facebook. I do too.
I don't think Facebook is going to much care about that though. I don't think they are going to be Facebooks target audience.

What I don't get is why Facebook would want to buy Oculus VR... The best case scenario is that they allow OVR to develop the Rift, they don't meddle with it at all, allow all sorts of SDKs and dev tools and basically produce what everyone was expecting, then OVR gets to work on Facebook for Rift and it sits entirely separate.

Worst case, it has a 'sign in through Facebook' screen when you turn it on for the first time, and it's nothing more than a paperweight to me. Or, for people who do have a Facebook account, they shove a load of advertising in somehow.

I don't know, but I've gone from 'almost certain buy' to 'will treat the same as a bunch of bananas that could possibly contain a huge spider'. Prod from a distance, make sure it's safe, then buy and enjoy.

Morpheus is not an alternative. It´s handicapped by the HDMI standard sadly and console players won´t pay more then 299$ if even that for something truly good...

Signing in to facebook come on I believe that when I see it...

What handicap?
Morpheus would have HDMI 2.0 port.
That can do 4k at 60fps.
Bandwidth 18gbps.
There are ways of getting 120hz through.

Console players who like driving games have bought steering wheels/pedals and seats for them costing more than $299.
This is a whole new medium.
Why get a new TV for a console when you can get VR instead for it.

Quick question:

A)Oculus:
Technology proactive, small budget, lots of growth potentail
B)Facebook: Technology proactive + huge budget reserves
C)Game Developers: Technology reactive, small budget resources, growth dependent on market segment performance (video game sales)

Which two added together do you think will make the biggest impact?

I have a smart TV with facebook in it, turns out you can disable that feature... Oculus is a display too, albeit a more advanced display than a TV, but still a display. They won't require you sign into Facebook to use the Rift, but if you want to use it for more than just gaming (which you definitely will), the apps will be cleverly implemented into the display for seamless virtual user experience no matter what you may be using it for. I see this as a good move for both parties - Facebook gets to be branded as the first company to SUCCESSFULLY introduce VR - and will directly compete with the augmented reality segment coming. Everyone who likes the idea of VR and thinks this is a bad move is missing the bigger picture - VR will be a portal to much more than immersive gaming. Using it the way that Zuckerburg is meant to be used - "But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

If you really think about the difficulties it would take to implement this kind of idea, it will not only require all kinds of different compatibility issues with hardware suppliers, but imagine the logistical nightmare trying to initiate integration with social, information and media networks to broadcast all the data you'd need for an avatar-like experience in realtime with minimal lag. These networks will first need to develop mainstream cameras that can record video on full 360 axis in stereoscopic 60z 3D and be able to broadcast that kind of bandwidth to millions of people (think of how many millions of people at one time would tune in to watch the Superbowl through the "Rift Network"). We don't even need to go into how virtual reality would benefit communications like meetings, in depth training seminars with virtual hands on exercises from across the world. Then: home user virtual reality cameras so you can record little Johnny take his first steps and replay them again virtually like he is standing right in front of you.

Long story short, this vision requires muscle, like the kind that only Google and Facebook can provide. That is the benefit to Oculus. Did you think game developers were going to lead the virtual revolution? No, they are too busy trying to keep up the the sea-change in demand for games that fit different formats (virtual, augmented, glasses free 3D, 4k resolution, etc,etc..) that they don't have the time or resources to push the envelope. I mean, we're still waiting for the games to catch up to the unbelievable hardware available now and in the near future. How long has directX11 been out now iRacing? cough cough... I for one love the fact this partnership is announced. Okay so maybe the rift will be not entirely focused on gaming alone, but the ball is rolling in the right direction towards a virtual future and yes we can also play video games on it too while we wait for a stripped down hardcore gaming headset that you all are talking about... but who are we kidding, we'll still wanna use it for virtual porn also. just sayin.

Might be my fault all this. I don't have a facebook account and I think they've finally got a plan that might work after all this time. :dopey:

Markus "Notch" Persson:
"I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook," the Minecraft creator said. "Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven't historically been a stable platform. There's nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me."

He further added, "I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition."

"I have the greatest respect for the talented engineers and developers at Oculus. It's been a long time since I met a more dedicated and talented group of people. I understand this is purely a business deal, and I'd like to congratulate both Facebook and the Oculus owners. But this is where we part ways."

Oculus succeeded in getting this far because there was a gaming market. The market will still be there, whether it's them or another company that services it.

This is a F'ing disaster to be honest. I have known Palmer on the M2bS3D boards for years and didn't expect this. Facebook will take this product and destroy it. At least Palmer got paid for all his dedication over the years. Wonder if my Palmer MRG2 he personally made meI have at home is worth anything. :)

It will not be a 4K display for sure. it will be 1080p-24hz 3D or something that would make sense for the weak PS 4 and they will have to keep the price down because console gamers isn´t enthusiasts so they are even more cost sensitive then the PC market.

You said it was HDMI limited, now you are saying 1080p 24hz? That is just simply ridiculous.
I think you are confusing output of video signal to specs of screen display too.
Both display and PS4 have already been doing 60hz 1080p on the VR. This is a minimum for Sony, less than 60fps causes sickness.

I dont have the time, but you need to do some reading up about VR and the user experience and the aim, and in particular Sony and Oculus's goals for display output.
A fixed screen bluray in 3d is different. Being inside the world, to look around at 24fps would be terrible.

People are still saying that Facebook will ruin this product, but not stating how or why? Worried about ads? Every product has ads, next argument please. I'd love to hear how Facebook will kill the Rift, and what is the alternative to get virtual reality headsets off the ground and into the mainstreams where the money is? How is that gaming peripheral market looking these days anyways? Ask Logitech... ITS A TINY SEGMENT!!! Gamers will never provide enough market share $$ for products to crossover into mainstream use unless they are designed to be crossover products (Not just for gaming). I still have not heard anyone answer my question about about how they believe game developers to lead some kind of virtual revolution without a massive collaboration effort with a major investor like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Etc,. Producing, transmitting and organizing the amount of DATA that virtual reality will command takes a massive new data infrastructure. Does this sound like something game and hardware developers have on their to-do list?

I can't wait to see Candy Crush and FarmVille in 3D!!! That's some revolutionary technology right there!

*Shoots self*

I'll remain optimistic but cautious of this deal. I'm keeping my DK2 pre-order, because I believe it will still be the best VR platform atleast for the near future. Once the Facepalmer Riftbook CV1 is released, I'm hoping there will be enough competitiors (Sony, Razer?) around by then to have something else to choose from if Facebook will do something sinister with Oculus.

Time will tell.

If there are two VR head sets available that are similar in performance. I'll go with the one that isn't CIA sponsored. Errr I mean Facebook.

Long live Sony! Hopefully they Bring the goods.

Now if OR is indeed a superior device. I'll buy into it. Only for performance. To me it's like having a 8 sec Ford or 10 sec Chevy at the same price. While I may prefer Chevy. I'm buying the 8 sec car. :)

Gonna be interesting to see this unfold.
